Joint taskforce clears access roads to Apapa (BusinessDay)
The joint taskforce set up by the Lagos State Government comprising the police, military personnel and Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has moved trucks off the access roads to Apapa and its environs. Hassan Mahmud, the public affairs officer of LASTMA, who confirmed this to BusinessDay on Saturday, said some trucks indiscriminately parked on the Mile 2-Tincan axis as well as others on Ijora-Apapa bridge were removed from the roads. He did not, however, disclose the number of trucks towed by the joint taskforce. Mahmud said the taskforce moved into the Apapa axis midnight on Friday, and worked till early this morning to restore sanity to the chaotic traffic situation in the area. Read more
MAN, Lagos to sign MoU on safety standards (Punch)
The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, Lagos State branch is set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Lagos State Safety Commission to ensure that its members comply with accepted safety standards. The Chairman, MAN, Lagos branch, Francis Meshioye, stated this during the private session of the 51st Annual General Meeting of the association on Thursday. He listed agreements contained in the MoU to include the suspension of the use of consultants to audit member companies; registration by the respective companies of all their health, safety and environment managers and officers with the commission at the rate of N10,000 per annum. 2019: Lagos APC ward chairmen endorse Yayi (Nation)
One hundred and eighty five ward chairmen of All Progressives Congress, (APC) from all the wards in Lagos West Senatorial District have endorsed Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola aka Yayi for second term as senator.The endorsement came during a meeting Senator Adeola held with the ward chairmen to inform them of his intention to contest for second term in the largest senatorial district in Nigeria. “In the 8th Senate, I am one of the senators with the highest number of bills sponsorship and two of my bills were among the 23 Constitutional Amendment bills passed by the National Assembly. My voice is usually heard on the floor of the Senate on major issues of national importance. I have so far done two major empowerment programmes and another one is coming up in September” he told the ward chairmen. Read more
For President Emmanuel Macron, ART X Lagos exhibits contemporary Nigerian art (Guardian)
ART X Lagos was not left out during French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to the iconic New Afrika Shrine, as it curated a special exhibition of artworks.The show featured works by three of Nigeria’s leading contemporary artists, Victor Ehikhamenor, Abraham Oghobase and Ndidi Emefiele. Macron, who is a lover of the arts, is currently working towards making France more attractive to artists from all over the world, with a particular interest in African contemporary art and talent. It was an opportunity for ART X Lagos founder, Tokini Peterside, introduced the artists to the French President Emmanuel Macron and the Lagos State Governor, Akinwumi Ambode. The work on display covered a wide range of forms including, photography and mixed media. Read more
FotoFactory.Lagos Opens Monday (ThisDay)
FotoFactory.Lagos, an international photography workshop that offers a teaching programme aimed at young Nigerian photographers who are interested in developing their skills and careers, opens tomorrow Moday, July 23 at CCA, along McEwen Street in Sabo Yaba, Lagos. On its third edition, the theme of this year’s workshop which runs until Friday, July 27 is “Explore Your Vision”. It will be facilitated by the Austrian-born and Germany-based photographer Eva Maria Ocherbauer and the Nigerian photgraphic duo Uche James Iroha and Rahima Gambo. “The workshop covers conceptual project-based thinking through sequences of lectures and critiques, students get trained how to gain a conscious and intuitive understanding of the visual language of photography,” according to the organisers. Eko Disco rehabilitates facilities in Ikoyi (Vanguard)
The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) said on Saturday it had commenced the rehabilitation of work on power facilities in Ikoyi and environs to improve services to its customers in the area. Mr Godwin Idemudia, the General Manager, Corporate Communications, EKEDC, said in Lagos the network improvement work was being handled by Marolls Engineering Limited. According to him, the exercise will start with the rehabilitation of Moore Road 11kv Feeder and Injection substation. He said the rehabilitation work would involve digging, pole erection, cable laying, back-lifting and thrust boring across roads and front of some premises where necessary. Read more
Rotary Club rescues Lagos schools with furniture (NewTelegraph)
Following the discovery of inadequate furniture in Mainland Primary School Fadeyi, the Rotary Club of Gbagada South has donated chairs and tables and other furniture to the school management. Sunday Telegraph learnt that prior to the humanitarian club’s intervention, an average of five chairs and tables were in each seven classrooms of the school with a total population of 188 pupils. Presenting the items to the school management, the District Governor, Rotarian Kola Sodipe, confirmed that the club discovered the grossly inadequate furniture in the school and other areas which required attention. He said that was why his team decided to intervene. Read more

Apapa traffic decongestion cripples haulage companies businesses (Tribune)
Many private haulage firms have lamented disruption of their operations due to the diversion of articulated vehicles into their parks by “Operation Restore Sanity” Task Force. According to employees of some of the haulage firms who declined not to have their names in print, many of the trailers and tankers are being forcefully diverted into their premises and park by the Task Force, thereby congesting and disrupting operations of the firms. Speaking to Tribune Online, some of the private haulage workers stated that, “The Task Force set up by the Vice President, Yemi Oshinbajo are forcefully diverting trailers and trucks that are parked on the road into our premises. The Federation of International Basketball (FIBA Africa), has announced Lagos, for the second time, as the host of the 2019 FIBA Men’s World Cup qualifiers. The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) said that the 2019 FIBA Men’s World Cup qualifier 4th round was billed to take place between Sept. 14 and Sept. 16, at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Lagos. Afolabi Oni, Media Officer of Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), in a statement issued on Saturday said that FIBA Secretary General, Alphonse Bile, communicated the decision to the federation on Friday. “”The decision to award the hosting the rights of the 4th window of the qualifiers was contained in a letter sent to NBBF secretariat by FIBA Africa Secretary General, Alphonse Bile on Friday. Int’I Badminton Classics end in Lagos (Independent)
This year’s edition of the Lagos International Badminton Classics will come to an end today at the Badminton Section of the Molade Okoya-Thomas Multipurpose Hall of the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos. The Classics which served off on Wednesday with over 20 countries participating is the brain child of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC). Meanwhile, the chairman of the LSSC, Dr. Kweku Tandoh said the sports classics since 2013 has impacted positively to the development of athletes and sports in general in Lagos State. Read more
