As the country marks the Democracy Day today, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr Mudashiru Obasa, has said Nigeria should not forget those who laid down their lives for the country’s democracy. Obasa, who is the Chairman, Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, described as democracy heroes the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, and his wife, Kudirat. Popularly regarded as the freest and fairest since the country gained independence on October 1, 1960, Abiola defeated his contender, Alhaji Bashir Tofa, in the poll. Read more

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Afe Babalola, on Tuesday, called on the Federal Government to work towards making June 12 the inauguration day of future presidents and state governors. He said President Muhammadu Buhari’s recent declaration of June 12 as Democracy Day and recognition of the late MKO Abiola were good steps to the realisation of true democracy in Nigeria. Drunk driver crushes three siblings, motorcyclist to death in Lagos (Punch)

The driver of a sachet water producing factory, Ademola Awe, has allegedly crushed three siblings and a motorcyclist to death on Ekundayo Street in the Epe Local Government Area of Lagos State. The victims were identified as Esther Orimisan, 24; Kofoworola Orimisan, 17; two-year-old Emmanuel Orimisan; and the motorcyclist, Femi Shojedo. PUNCH Metro gathered that Awe, who was driving a Ford pick-up van with number plate GGE 42 XN around 11pm on Saturday allegedly under the influence of alcohol, had hit another vehicle on his way, but while attempting to escape from the scene, he allegedly drove without the vehicle’s headlights in order to avoid being apprehended. FG orders varsities to exempt disabled candidates from post-UTME (Punch)

The Federal Ministry of Education on Tuesday ordered universities and other tertiary institutions in the country to exempt blind and deaf people from the post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination. They were also instructed to exclude prisoners as well as foreign centre candidates   from the exam. The   ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Sonny Echono, who gave the order, said such individuals were under the Special Needs category and should  be considered for admission, provided they met the minimum requirements. The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed the killing of two children in the Umuogoakpu-Ngbo community, Ohaukwu Local Government Area of the state by yet-to-be-identified persons. PUNCH Metro gathered that the assailants attacked the family of Benjamin Oke and butchered his seven-year-old son, Chinonso, and his four-year-old brother, Chukwudi, in the presence of their mother on Sunday. Protests over five-month detention of students who criticised Madonna varsity (Punch)

Scores of students, under the aegis of the National Association of Nigerian Students, on Tuesday, blocked the entrance to the Federal High Court, Awka, Anambra State, in protest against the arraignment of six undergraduates of the Madonna University, Okija. The arraigned students, a member of the National Youth Service Corps and a lecturer of the institution were arrested and had been in detention since February this year over an opinion they posted on Facebook about alleged poor management in the institution. A US mother of five children who were killed by their father has asked a jury to spare him the death penalty. Amber Kyzer told a court in South Carolina that Tim Jones Jr “did not show my children mercy by any means, but my kids loved him”.
