June 12: Lagos wants recordings of MKO Abiola’s last moments made public (Vanguard)

As Nigerians mark the 25th anniversary of annulment of June 12 Presidential election today, Lagos State Government, yesterday, demanded that the video and voice records of late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (M. K. O.) Abiola’s last moments be made public. The government spoke through Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Kehinde Bamigbetan, at this year’s International Archives Day commemoration organised by the State Records and Archives Bureau, LASRAB, in Ikeja. According to Bamigbetan, “as we get ready to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the death of late Chief M. K. O. Abiola, it is a remarkable and evolutionary day, and it is very evolutionary to demand that the records of that day, when he took that tea, be revealed.” Read more

School leaver receives award for inventing Lagos 4th Mainland Bridge prototype (NewTelegraph)

A 15-year-old innovator, Master Babatemilehi Daomi, who invented a hydraulic-powered, collapsible prototype of the Lagos Fourth Mainland Bridge, says he has invented a prototype of 100 per cent Nigerian aircraft. Daomi gave the assurance in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Sunday night after receiving an award at the 2018 Nigerian Child Summit Award for Inventions and Technology. The event held at the Oriental Hotels. The secondary school leaver said that he had the skills to invent a number of things that would address some of Nigeria’s transport, water, electricity and telecommunication challenges. Read more

Ambode advocates record keeping for better governance (Guardian)

In commemoration of the 20I8 International Archives Day, Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, has urged governments to adopt proper records keeping, as vital documents provide solutions to challenges in governance.  During the celebration with the theme: Records and Archives Management in the Public Service: A Key to Good Governance and Quality Service Delivery, Ambode noted that proper records keeping guides decision making for quality service delivery.  The governor, wrepresented by the Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Relations, Oluseye Oladejo, said it was sad that Artificial Intelligence (AI) was gradually taking the place of manual and accurate records keeping. Lagos deputy governor urges healthy living (Punch)

The Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Adebule, has asked residents of the state to pay attention to their health. Adebule said while the government was making efforts to strengthen the health sector with facilities and personnel, residents should also monitor their health conditions. She spoke at an event organised by Dano Milk to commemorate the 2018 World Milk Day at the Muri Okunola Park, Victoria Island, Lagos. A statement on Monday said the deputy governor was represented at the occasion by Mrs Titilayo Solarin. Society of Nigerian Archivists (SNA) President Professor Olutayo Adesina has warned against using sensitive materials to wrap groundnut and roasted plantain. He spoke yesterday during the celebration of International Archives Day organised by the State Records and Archives Bureau (LASRAB) at Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos. Adesina said the cavalier manner in which documents were handled by those who should know better led to the leakages of sensitive documents from high and low offices. Sex claim: UNILAG calls for memoranda (Punch)

The University of Lagos authorities have set up a fact-finding panel to investigate the recent alleged case of sexual harassment involving a female student and a lecturer in the Department of English and Literary Studies at the institution. This was made known in a statement signed by the Principal Assistant Registrar, Comunication Unit, Mrs. Taiwo Oloyede, and made available to our correspondent on Friday. The panel in turn called for memoranda from members of the university community, including the institution’s staff and students, as well as the general public. It directed the call to those who have useful information on the allegation and any other one, which could aid its assignment to address the memoranda to the “Secretary, Fact Finding Panel on the Allegation of Sexual Harassment involving a Lecturer in the University, c/o Registrar’s Office”, and  submit to the 5th Floor, Senate Building, University of Lagos. June 20 for judgment in N10b suit against Lagos (Nation)

Justice Kazeem Alogba of an Ikeja High Court has fixed June 20 for judgement in a N10 billion suit by Nicole Adesanya against the Lagos State government. Adesanya is the child whose brain was allegedly damaged during birth at Somolu General Hospital seven years ago, owing to alleged negligence of the medical practitioners in the hospital. Nicole’s father, Mr. Adebiyi Adesanya, sued the Lagos State Government, seeking N10 billion as damages for his daughter’s condition, which, he alleged, was caused by the negligence of government medical officers. But the suit, which was filed by their counsel, Mr. Don Akaegbu, on March 4, 2013, was referred to the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) for possible resolution by Justice Josephine Oyefeso. The Amos Oluwafemi Olomola Memorial Foundation, in commemoration of two years of the passing of Dr. Femi Olomola, has inducted an annual award at the Government Technical College Lagos, Agidingbi-Ikeja, Lagos, for the best Tech 3 student in Graphic Design. Sex-for-marks: Accuser must show up –UNILAG VC (NewTelegraph)

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, yesterday said that for the panel set up by the institution to do justice to its mandate of investigating the allegation of sexual harassment against one of the university’s professors, Olusegun Awonusi, the accuser must show up and present her case. Ogundipe, who spoke on the side line of a lecture in honour of the university’s 10th Vice- Chancellor, the late Prof. Babatunde Sofoluwe, said there was little the university could do if the accuser did not show up. The VC, however, promised that his administration would ensure justice on the matter and any other related cases of moral or financial improprieties. He said: “Well, let me say that if the lady does not come out, then how would the panel conclude the investigation? We must not hear from one side but from both sides and ensure that we have balanced information at our disposal. Read more

Lagos residents accuse filling station of polluting water, land (Punch)

Some residents of Akoka, in the Ilaje, Bariga area of Lagos State, have raised the alarm over alleged contamination of their water and land by Total Filling Station, Akoka. The affected communities are Abdullahi Street, Ayetoro Street and St. Finbarrs College Road. Punch Metro gathered that the underground petrol storage tank of the filling station leaked sometime in August 2017. The tank was said to have spilt its entire content, contaminating the soil and groundwater of the communities. Read more

Lagos gives rapist life jail for defiling 12-year-old girl (Punch)

After 15 months of trial, a defiler, 28-year-old Kingsley Inyang, is to spend the rest of his life in jail, a Lagos High Court sitting in Igbosere ruled on Monday. Inyang bagged life imprisonment for defiling a 12-year-old girl. Justice Sedoten Ogunsanya, who handed down the verdict, found him guilty of the offence which contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. In the trial that lasted for one year and three months, Ogunsanya held that the Lagos State prosecution team led by Mr. Adebayo Haroun, proved its case beyond all reasonable doubts. Read more

As the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) continues to foot-drag on its activities towards presenting a formidable squad at Asaba 2018 African Senior Athletics Championship, a private body, Making of Champions (MoC) is set for its first Grand Prix and Relays in Lagos. The event will run from today to Thursday at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex, Lagos. “It’s been a tough year for athletes in Nigeria with the dearth of competitions since the last Commonwealth Games, so the first MoC Grand Prix and Relays was borne to show our support to the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) by hosting a competition to help keep Nigerian athletes active ahead of the African Championships in Asaba in August,” a statement by MoC said yesterday.
