Kaigama tasks leaders on humility, selfless service

The Archbishop of the Abuja Catholic Archdiocese, His Grace Ignatius Kaigama, has called on all leaders in the country to be humble and selfless in service to humanity as demonstrated by Jesus on Holy Thursday.

Kaigama  made the call on Thursday in an interview with newsmen on the sideline of Mass of the Lord’s Supper celebration in Abuja.

The bishop said that Jesus, in showing example of a good leader, washed the feet of His disciples and died in their place.

“The essence of leadership is selfless service.

“And that is why Jesus has taught us like this in the ceremony of Holy Thursday during the Last Supper where he washed the feet of his apostles and tasked them to do same among themselves to show love, unity and service.

“Jesus is teaching us how to be humble and how to be loving to everyone and how to be there for our brothers and sisters especially those who suffer.

“We thank Him for this great day and this great lesson and we hope that leaders, either spiritual, transitional, political, whichever type of leaders we have, will imbibe this lesson that you are not there to show your might.

“You are there to serve, especially the poor and the marginalised, so leaders take note, Jesus is showing us the way and He is telling us how to lead,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Mass of the Lord’s Supper is celebrated on Holy Thursday across the world, majorly by Catholic  faithfuls.

It is a celebration that marks the institution of the Holy Eucharist and the Catholic priesthood by Jesus Christ over 2,000 years ago. (NAN)
