Kano state government has given quit notice to businesses occupying parks and gardens originally designated as relaxation spots but converted to business.
The state commissioner for environment and climate change Nasiru Sule Garo, gave the directive, on Wednesday, while marking the world environment day.
Garo said there many of such gardens and parks in Kano that were taken by businesses and government is bent on reestablishing befitting public parks in the state to serve as relaxation spots and ‘Oxygen bags’.
He said the public garden opposite Abdullahi Waste hospital and another one located on Audu Bako Way were converted into business premises as against the original for which they were created.
The commissioner said as part of its tree planting campaign to mitigate climate change, the state government is planning to plant 3 million seedlings in collaboration with ACReSaL and other stakeholders.
According to him the ministry’s name was changed to Environment and climate change to deal with the pressing issues of climate change in the world as it affects the State.
Garo said in addition to Clearance of drainages and erosion control measures, the ministry carried out mosquito and pest control operations in 44 local government councils including boarding Tsangaya and Islamiyya schools.
“As you are aware vectors and pest transmit several diseases that affect public health which include Malaria fever, cholera, lassa fever, onchocerciasis, schistosomiasis, trypanosomiasis and dracunculiasis which continue to exert heavy morbidity and mortality burden especially in our rural communities,” Garo said.
While highlighting the revitalisation of Kano afforestation project and Kano sustainable project, the commissioners said Kano climate change policy is being developed to make the state environmentally friendly.
He urged residents to stop indiscriminate dumping of refuse as house-to-house sanitary inspection will continue to be observed to ensure people keep the environment healthy. (DailyTrust)
