Group demands prosecution of killer policeman (Punch)
A human rights organisation, Know Your Rights Initiative, has demanded the prosecution of a policeman attached to the Isheri Osun Police Division, Lagos, for allegedly killing a graduate, Jude Okoronta.
The group decried the arrest and arraignment of some youths who were accused of damaging the property of a hotel in Ijegun, Ikotun, where the victim was allegedly shot dead by the cop.
The NGO, in a petition to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions and the Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, alleged that the residents were arrested while in a meeting with the Area M Commander over the killing. Read more
Many injured as transport workers clash at park (Nation)
Many persons were on Tuesday injured after hoodlums went berserk at the Maza-Maza Motor Park, Mile Two, Lagos.
It was gathered that the fight, which started on Monday morning, almost snowballed into an ethnic duel between factions of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
Our correspondent learnt that violence erupted after some aggrieved members attempted to impeach the NURTW leader in the area identified simply as Emma. Their plot, it was gathered, was rebuffed by a faction loyal to the leader. According to a driver, who declined to state his name, violence erupted in no time, with the factions wielding dangerous weapons such as guns and cutlasses. Read more
4 held for ‘diverting tiles worth N10m’(Nation)
The police have arrested four persons for allegedly forging documents and diverting floor tiles and other building materials worth N10 million.
Ganiyu Yusuf, 62, Femi Adewara, 51, Ibrahim Suleimon, 30 and Akeem Abdullahi, 48, were arrested on July 4, after they allegedly diverted a 20-foot container carrying the items. It was gathered that the suspects diverted the container from Apapa Port and emptied its content at a shop in Iddo Terminal.
According to Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal, the suspects forged documents to enable them move the truck from the port. Read more
Harvest of arrest as police pick 137 cultists during ‘77’ celebration (SUN)
The Lagos State Police Command has arrested 137 suspected cult members in different locations of the state.
The suspected cultists were observing the “7th day of the 7th month” celebration, where they initiate new members and celebrate their old members.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, who paraded the suspects yesterday at the Command Headquarters, Ikeja, said that 120 were arrested in Ikorodu where they were observing ‘7-7’, undergoing initiation in preparation to unleash mayhem on the larger society.
Based on intelligence available to the command, which was communicated to the officer in charge of the Anti-Cultism Unit, who deployed plainclothes policemen to Ikorodu, police “efforts paid off last week while they were observing their nocturnal cult festival.” Read more
We’re not cultists, suspects claim (Nation)
Thirteen of the 137 persons arrested for alleged cultism have accused the police of wrongfully picking them up.
The suspects, who were paraded yesterday by Lagos State Police Chief Imohimi Edgal, claimed that they were arrested while going about their lawful businesses. The police on Saturday and Sunday nights raided some parts of the state to frustrate plans by the Black Axe confraternity to foment trouble during their yearly July 7 celebrations.
About 120 of them were arrested at Ikorodu and a big banner with Black Axe logo, a keg laden with liquid suspected to be an Indian Hemp-based drink called ‘skoochies’, six small kegs of skoochies, a big clay pot, two small calabashes and a locally made pistol recovered from them. The others were nabbed at Ogombo in Ajah. Read more
‘Doctor-hacker’ charged with stealing N31.5m cars (Nation)
A 26-year-old medical doctor, Michael Thompson Williams, was yesterday arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing two cars worth N31.5million.
Williams, of 2667 Hilton Layout, Lekki, was also described as a hacker. Prosecuting Inspector Peter Nwagwu told magistrate Y. Aje-Afunwa that Williams committed the offence on May 10 at about 7:50pm at Ajah, Lagos.
He said Williams, on May 10, stole one Porsche car valued at N28 million, belonging to one Mr. Abidogun Adewale. On the same day, the defendant also allegedly stole a Toyota Camry car valued at N3.5 million belonging to Omopeyi Oluwaseun. Read more
Policemen chase, force student to jump off Lagos bridge (Punch)
A 200-level material science engineering student at the Kwara State University, Oluwadara Adedayo, is battling with injuries after he allegedly jumped off the Cele-Okota Bridge in Lagos State.
Adedayo was allegedly chased to the bridge by some armed policemen attached to the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Lagos State Police Command.
Punch Metro learnt that Adedayo, who was currently on Industrial Training in Lagos, was heading towards the Yaba area of the state last Monday when he was accosted by the operatives at Cele bus stop.
It was gathered that the cops, after stopping the 24-year-old, decided to check a mobile phone and a modem found on him. Read more
Land grabbers invade Lagos community, attack estates (Vanguard)
The peaceful environment of Satellite Town in Ojo area of Lagos State was disrupted recently by hoodlums, who unleashed terror on residents.
The hoodlums, who the residents described as land grabbers, aka Omoniles, were said to have vandalised properties worth millions of naira.
Sunday Vanguard gathered estates affected include Luke Manuel, Sandfeild Estate, Daily Times Estate, Uba Estate, Kings’ Estate, Peter Memesi Estate, Owolabi Estate, Mobil Estate, Agip Estate and New Road Estate.
According to one of the landlords in Luke Manuel Estate, Ade Ebunoluwa, the attack started as Omonile issue which saw land grabbers moving from one site to another. Read more
Barber who set self-ablaze on Lagos road dies (Punch)
A barber has taken his own life after setting himself ablaze on a road leading to Omole Estate, near Akiode Bus Stop, Lagos.
He died while he was receiving treatment at a hospital.
The barber had reportedly emerged on the road around 4:30pm on Wednesday holding a five-litre jerrycan of petrol.
He subsequently poured the fuel on his body; struck a match and lit himself. Our correspondent learnt that a passerby, who was standing a few metres away from the scene, rushed to put out the fire. Read more
