The Kwara State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a man identified only as Fatai and three of his other friends for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend, identified only as Aduke, over claims that she cheated on him.

Aduke, a student of the Bartholomew College of Health, Kwara State, was said to have been invited to Fatai’s residence.

PUNCH Metro learnt that when Aduke arrived at the house, she met Fatai and his three friends, who started interrogating her.

The friends were said to have accused the undergraduate of cheating, as they grabbed her hands and legs and flogged her. Read more 

Lagos Task Force to crush 250 power bikes, despatch motorcycles for violating traffic rules (Guardian)

To enforce the ban on activities of commercial motorcycles in Lagos State, the government has said it will crush about 250 power and despatch motorcycles recently seized by the task force.

Chairman of the State Environmental Task Force and Special Offences, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), Shola Jejeloye, said the power bikes and despatch motorcycles, whose capacity are above the required standard were confiscated for either driving against traffic (one-way), conveying of passengers on despatch bikes and riding on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor of the state.

According to him, though the ban focuses on commercial motorcycles popularly known as Okada, the State Transport Sector reform laws prohibit any motorcycle of any capacity from riding one-way. Read more 

Fuel scarcity worsens, black market booms at N300/litre (Punch) 

Fuel scarcity worsened in Lagos, the Federal Capital Territory and other parts of the country on Tuesday, resulting in motorists spending hours at filling stations.

For oil marketers, the solution to the worsening fuel queues across the country is for the Federal Government to approve an increase in the pump price of the commodity.

Although some marketers had already raised the price of fuel in their outlets, they admitted that the move had not been approved by the government, noting that dealers could be sanctioned for selling above the regulated rate. Read more 

Lagos renews commitment to renewable energy (Nation)

The General Manager, Lagos State Electricity Board, Mukhtaar Tijani has said the government was developing infrastructure to facilitate transitioning to renewable energy system.

At a sensitisation campaign tagged “Light Up Makoko”, in Makoko Community, Lagos Mainland, Tijani said the administration would drastically reducing carbon footprint.

“As more and more countries are expanding energy generation from renewable and sustainable sources, the government in commitment to the Lagos Climate Action Plan is increasing attention to decarbonising the power system and providing structures to meet the energy need of the populace,” he said. Obey traffic rules, Lagos warns bike riders (Punch)

The Lagos State Task Force has warned dispatch riders and power bike riders against various traffic offences following the enforcement of the ban on the activities of commercial motorcycles across the state by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The agency’s chairman, Shola Jejeloye, disclosed this in a statement signed by the agency’s Director, Press and Public Affairs, Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, on Tuesday.

Jejeloye noted that the agency had seized 250 bikes for violating traffic laws and they would be crushed during the weekend at the task force’s crushing site in Alausa.

He said, “Riding a power bike doesn’t make you immune to traffic laws of the state especially when it has to do with riding against traffic on one way which is highly dangerous to road users and even pedestrians. Read more 

Victor Umeh: Igbos who are against Peter Obi should bury their heads in shame (DailyTrust)

Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Senator Victor Umeh, has asked Igbos opposed to the presidential ambition of Labour Party (LP) Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, to bury their heads in shame.

He said this during an interactive session at the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) secretariat in Awka, Anambra capital, on Tuesday evening.

The Senator, who is currently a member of LP, said God took him to his new party to reconcile with Obi.

Obi had served as Anambra governor under APGA, while Umeh was chairman of the party at the time.

But the duo fell out shortly before Obi dumped APGA for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Read more 

Court sentences housemaid who killed Igbinedion’s mother (Guardian)

Justice Efe Ikponmwonba of the Edo State High court sitting in Benin City, has sentenced Dominion Okoro, the housemaid to late Madam Maria Igbinedion, mother of former governor of Edo State, Lucky Igbinedion, to death by hanging.

The convict killed the 85-year-old woman at her residence in Government Reserved Area (GRA) Benin City on December 2, 2021, before running away with her jewelry.

Delivering judgment in the case, Justice Ipkonwonba convicted Dominion on the three-count charge filed against her.

The court sentenced Dominion to death by hanging for murder and robbery with violence, while the court sentenced her to life imprisonment on count two, for applying harmful substances to the late Madam Igbinedion. Read more 

We’ll comply with court order on voter registration extension – INEC (Vanguard)

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured Nigerians that the commission will comply with the court order to extend the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration to June 30.

The Chairman of the Commission, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, made the assurance at a briefing ahead of the Youth Vote Count Mega Music Concert on Saturday, said the commission has a history of complying with court orders.

The INEC chairman, who was represented by his Chief Press Secretary to the INEC chairman, Rotimi Oyekamni, said: “The commission has a history of complying with the court order, that I can assure you. I understand from the court papers that the commission was asked to come on the 29th of this month to give the court and submit certain documents. Read more

If Pope Francis retires, the current betting odds point to his replacement as being either Asian or Black, according to bookmakers.

The Online Betting Group lists Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle from the Philippines and Cardinal Peter Turkson of Ghana as the top two favorites to become the next pope.

The site gives Tagle, the former Archbishop of Manila, 5 to 1 odds while Turkson, 73, is currently listed at 6 to 1. If elected, he would be the first African pope in more than 1,500 years.

Kellogg’s is splitting into three separate companies by spinning off its US cereal and plant-based foods businesses from its global snacking arm – which includes brands such as Pringles.

The company began life in 1894 when WK Kellogg created Corn Flakes and became known around the world for its breakfast cereals.

The brand was first introduced in the UK in 1922 with Corn Flakes and All Bran imported from the US. It opened a UK office in London in 1924.

In recent years, the company has focused on building its snacking business, which includes the international cereal firm that serves the UK. Read more 

Child stabbed in chest by catfish during family fishing trip (Metro) 

A child under age 10 was impaled in the chest by a catfish while on a fishing trip with family.

The child, whose gender and age have not been released, was fishing in New Port Richey north of Tampa, Florida, and got stabbed by the catfish’s stinger, the Pasco County Fire Rescue tweeted on Monday.

Fire rescue spokesman Corey Dierdorff said the mother put her child in the family car and began driving on US highway 19 to a hospital.

‘While headed to the hospital with their mother, the child experienced difficulty breathing,’ the fire rescue tweeted. ‘Firefighters responded and listed the child as a trauma alert.’ Read more 

Army veteran from N.Y. becomes second American killed in Ukrainian fighting (UPI) 

A U.S. Army veteran was confirmed as the second American killed in Ukraine fighting, his family said in an obituary that was confirmed by the State Department.

Stephen D. Zabielski, 52, a native of New York, was killed by a landmine on May 15. He is survived by a wife, five stepchildren and seven siblings. The obituary said he was fighting in the Ukrainian village of Dorozhniank when he died but did not give any additional details.

A State Department official told the Washington Post that it has reached out to the family and has given “all possible consular assistance.” Zabielski, who had also lived in Florida, worked in construction before traveling to Ukraine.

Tristan Nettles, a Marine veteran who fought with Zabielski while in Ukraine, told Rolling Stone magazine they were part of a squad of Western volunteers attached to the Ukrainian army called the Wolverines. Read more 

North Korea: Kim Jong Un convenes military meeting amid tensions (AlJazeera)

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has opened a meeting of senior military officials to discuss national defence policies and a continuing arms buildup following a series of ballistic missile tests this year that have stirred tensions with Washington and Seoul.

Pyongyang’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said on Wednesday that Kim presided over a meeting of the ruling Workers’ Party’s Central Military Commission that began on Tuesday to review defence work during the first half of 2022 and confirm “crucial and urgent tasks” to expand military capabilities and implement key defence policies.

The report did not specify any plans or mention critical remarks towards the United States or rival South Korea.

US and South Korean officials have said in recent months that Pyongyang could be preparing to conduct its first nuclear test since 2017, as Kim escalates brinkmanship aimed at cementing North Korea’s status as a nuclear power and negotiating economic and security concessions from a position of strength. US gun control: Bill clears first hurdle in US Senate (BBC) 

The US Senate has taken a first step towards passing what has been called the most significant new gun controls in a generation.

Senators voted to speed up the passage of the bipartisan bill, meaning it could be signed into law next week.

Although significant, the proposals fall far short of what many Democrats and activists have called for in the wake of a spate of mass shootings.

The measures include tougher background checks for buyers younger than 21.

The bill calls for funding to encourage states to implement “red flag” laws to remove firearms from people considered a threat. The act also includes $15bn (£12.2bn) in federal funding for mental health programs and school security upgrades. Read more

 Aaron Judge intends to just “wear a nice suit” and “introduce myself and sit back” as a three-person arbitration panel debates whether the New York Yankees should pay their All-Star outfielder the $21 million salary he believes he is worth this season.

The hearing will be held Friday, sources told ESPN’s Buster Olney.

“I’m looking forward to it,” Judge said Tuesday afternoon ahead of the Yankees’ game against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field, although he did not confirm the day. “I’ve had people in my agency, past players, that went through the process, said they hated it. And then other people that went through it said it was actually kind of good to hear about [yourself].”

Anderlecht move big step up, says Ishaq (Punch) 

Anderlecht have completed the signing of Nigerian midfielder Ishaq Abdulrazaq, the Belgian club announced on Monday.

The 20-year-old joined the Jupiler League side from Sweden’s Norrkoping for an undisclosed transfer fee.

“The first summer transfer is here. RSC Anderlecht have reached an agreement with Swedish club Norrkoping concerning the definitive transfer of Ishaq Abdulrazak,” Anderlecht said in an official statement on Monday.
