US approves first new Alzheimer’s drug in 20 years (BBC)

The first new treatment for Alzheimer’s disease for nearly 20 years has been approved by regulators in the United States, paving the way for its use in the UK.

Aducanumab targets the underlying cause of Alzheimer’s, the most common form of dementia, rather than its symptoms.

Charities have welcomed the news of a new therapy for the condition.

But scientists are divided over its potential impact because of uncertainty over the trial results.

At least 100,000 people in the UK with a mild form of the disease could be suitable for the drug if it were to be approved by the UK regulator.

2 trains collide in southern Pakistan, killing dozens (BrisbaneTimes)

An express train barrelled into another that had derailed in Pakistan before dawn on Monday, killing at least 45 people, authorities said. More than 100 were injured, and rescuers and villagers worked throughout the day to search crumpled cars for survivors and the dead.

Cries for help pierced the night as passengers climbed out of overturned or crushed rail cars, and continued to echo throughout the day at the scene in the district of Ghotki, in the southern province of Sindh.

Heavy machinery arrived to cut open some cars, and more than 15 hours after the crash, rescuers were carefully removing wreckage as they looked for anyone who might remain trapped – although hopes were fading for survivors. The military deployed troops, engineers and helicopters to assist.

At around 3.30am, the Millat Express train derailed and the Sir Syed Express train hit it minutes later, said Usman Abdullah, a deputy commissioner of Ghotki. It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the derailment, and the driver of the second train said he braked when he saw the disabled train but didn’t have time to avoid the collision. Read more

French Open 2021: Novak Djokovic survives scare to beat Lorenzo Musetti and reach quarter-finals (BBC)

Novak Djokovic avoided a shock fourth-round exit at the French Open after fighting back from two sets down against teenager Lorenzo Musetti.

The world number one looked out of sorts before rallying, leading 6-7 (7-9) 6-7 (2-7) 6-1 6-0 4-0 when the Italian, 19, retired with an injury.

World number 76 Musetti, playing in his first Grand Slam main draw, was given a standing ovation as he left the court.

Djokovic will face Italian ninth seed Matteo Berrettini next.

It is the fifth time that Djokovic has overturned a two-set deficit to win at a Slam.

However, he was clearly frustrated by Musetti, who was able to match him shot-for-shot in the opening stages.

The teenager began to struggle with what appeared to be an abdominal injury and, after winning just four points in the fourth set, took a medical time-out before retiring after losing 13 successive games.

“I like to play young guys in the best-of-five because even at two sets down, I feel I still have my chances,” Djokovic said. Read more

Rashford penalty gives England win over Romania (DailyTrust)

Marcus Rashford’s penalty earned England an unconvincing 1-0 win over Romania in their final warm-up friendly ahead of Euro 2020 in Middlesbrough on Sunday.

However, victory for Gareth Southgate’s men was again overshadowed by booing from supporters as the players took the knee before kick-off.

Southgate’s selection will also be questioned as he named an experimental line-up with five players who are not part of his final squad making an appearance at some point in the game.

There is still one place up for grabs in Southgate’s 26-man squad, though, due to an injury to Trent Alexander-Arnold.

James Ward-Prowse, Ben Godfrey and Ben White were all given the chance to further their case from the start, while Jesse Lingard and Ollie Watkins came off the bench in the second-half. Read more
