Lagos approves full reopening of markets (Thisday)
Lagos state governor Babajide Sanwoolu has approved the full reopening of both food and non food markets.
The markets were closed in March as part of measures to curb the spread of COVID-19. They were later reopened with specific days allotted to food and non food market. While food markets opened on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, non food markets opened on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
With the latest approval, all markets in the state are now to open daily.
In a statement announcing this, the commissioner for local government and community affairs, Dr Wale Ahmed, said the governor took the decision to further enhance trade and commerce and mitigate the hardship of recent times and ensure that Lagosians recover fast. Read more
South-West senators visit Lagos State, sue for peace (Vanguard)
South-West Senators on Tuesday visited the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to commiserate with him and Lagosians on the mayhem arising from the EndSARS protest.
Addressing the media, the lawmakers, led by Sen. Ajayi Boroffice, said that the Senate was pained by the level of damage and sued for peace for the progress of the state and the nation at large.

Nigeria police brutality inquiry hears graphic testimony (BBC)
The first witness at a Nigerian inquiry into police brutality has described how he was tortured and had teeth extracted by members of the now disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (Sars).
Okoye Agu was detained after his boss accused him of stealing from work.
The inquiry in Lagos state was formed in the wake of nationwide protests calling for an end to Sars.
It may also look into the shooting at protests last week in which rights groups say 12 people were killed. Read more
72hrs after IGP’s order, policemen still off Lagos roads (Vanguard)
Seventy-two hours after the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, directed members of the force to occupy space to bring an end to the widespread violence in the country, policemen are yet to heed the order.
Investigation carried out in major hot spots and volatile areas showed a noticeable absence of policemen.
Worse still, many of them are yet to walk the streets in uniforms, while all the security measures put in place to safeguard their respective stations, including barricading major busy roads, have not been effected. Read more
Poor funding responsible for unrealistic stable power supply in Nigeria – Senate (Tribune)
The Senate on Monday said Nigerians’ hope for improved power supply is unrealistic due to poor funding by the Federal Government.
The conclusion of the Senate is sequel to the revelation by the Minister of Power, Mamman Saleh, that the $5.8 million Mambilla project was yet to take off.
Saleh had appeared before the Senate committee on power to defend the 2021 budget when he made the revelation. Read more
RCCG declares fast, prayer for Nigeria (Vanguard)
Pastor Enoch Adeboye, General Overseer, the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has directed all members of the church to commence a 30-day fast and prayer for Nigeria.
The RCCG Assistant General Overseer, Admin and Personnel, Pastor Johnson Odesola, announced this in a statement on Tuesday in Ibadan.

NDLEA nabs Cyprus bound student with 13.55 kg of cannabis (Guardian)
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, (NDLEA) Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, (NAIA) Special Area Command, has foiled an attempt by an intending student to smuggle 13.55 kilogrammes of cannabis to Cyprus.
The Head of Public Affairs, NDLEA, Mr Jonah Achema made the disclosure in a statement made available to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja.
Achema said that the suspected drug trafficker, Sunday Odi was intercepted at the departure hall of the airport while attempting to board a Turkish airline flight to Northern Cyprus en-route Istanbul, Turkey. Read more
Senate suspends budget defence over nationwide vandalism, looting (Tribune)
Senate Committee on Interior on Tuesday suspended budget defence over the spate of attacks, vandalism and looting carried out by some youth in parts of the country following the hijack of the #Endsars campaign by hoodlums.
The committee said it cannot hold paramilitary agencies which can support security agencies to calm the sporadic unrest in the country at the national assembly complex over budget defence when their attentions are urgently needed in different parts of the country given the activities of some errant youths who have taken to the streets to vandalize and loot public and private properties. Air Force deploys helicopters as looters descend on NYSC camp in Abuja (Guardian)
The Nigeria Air Force has deployed three helicopters to tackle looters that descended on National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Kubwa, an Abuja suburb, in the early hours of Tuesday.
The helicopters were seen around 10:00 am hovering around the orientation camp. It was unclear if the helicopters touched down in the premises or the identity of the security agents they conveyed.
The Nigeria Army also deployed soldiers to the scene as a number of military trucks were seen heading towards the direction on Tuesday morning. Read more
Coronavirus: Russia steps up restrictions as infections surge (BBC)
Russia has brought in tighter restrictions to try to stem a surge in coronavirus cases, making the wearing of face masks compulsory in all crowded places including public transport.
Russia’s consumer health watchdog also advises regional governments to close bars and restaurants between 23:00 and 06:00.
On Tuesday Russia reported a daily record of 320 deaths from the virus.
Monday saw the number of new infections hit a record 17,347 over 24 hours. Read more

Man on trial for allegedly raping two drunk women in hotel (NYPost)
A man in the UK is on trial for allegedly following two drunk women into their hotel room and raping them during a threesome he claims was consensual.
Prosecutors said Callum Kenny, 24, of Cornwall attacked the pair in Bristol in late 2018 — including having “rough sex” with one of them when the other pal was in the bathroom, the Bristol Post reported.
The women had returned to their hotel room after spending a night on the town drinking wine, sangria and gin and then heading to a night club for dancing and sharing a shot of tequila, prosecutor Sarah Regan told jurors in Bristol Crown Court on Monday.
Surveillance video from the hotel showed the friends returning to the hotel. Read more
Huge Bangladesh rally calls for boycott of French products (BBC)
Tens of thousands of people have marched through the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka, demanding a boycott of French goods amid a row over France’s tougher stance on radical Islam.
They burned an effigy of President Emmanuel Macron, who has defended cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.
Police blocked the marchers from reaching the French embassy.
Mr Macron has become a target in several Muslim-majority countries after his defence of French secularism. Read more

Body of missing rapper found in trunk of friend’s car following crash (NYPost)
The body of an aspiring rapper who went missing earlier this month was found in the trunk of his friend’s car after it crashed on a Florida expressway, authorities said Monday.
State Highway Patrol troopers discovered 25-year-old Brian Trotter’s remains after smelling a “foul odor” and spotting flies buzzing around inside an Acura that got into an accident in suburban Miami on Sunday afternoon, the Miami Herald reported.
The driver, Robert Avery Coltrain — a longtime friend of the young musician — was charged with second-degree murder and illegal transport of human remains. Read more

Football clubs will be required to meet a recruitment diversity target of 15% in new executive jobs and 25% in coaching roles under a code devised by the Football Association.
The Football Leadership Diversity Code aims to tackle racial inequality in the English game.

A source highly connected in the continental body’s political network informed Sports Village Square that part of the restructuring of CAF may see all the board members vacating their positions.
