Survey Law: Lagos challenges Judgment, insists state determines who surveys land (ThisDay)

The Lagos State government has urged the Court of Appeal, Lagos Division to hold that the state being the owner of the land has the right to determine who works on its land just like a litigant has a right to Counsel of its choice.

The Lagos State Surveyor-General stated this in a Notice of Appeal filed against the judgement of Justice Daniel Osiagor of the Federal High Court in Lagos, which invalidated Section 5 of the state’s Survey Law that required surveyors to obtain the written consent of the Surveyor-General, before surveying any state land.

Justice Osiagor had held among others, that the Lagos Surveyor-General lacks the power to deny the plaintiffs or any registered surveyor’s consent to survey any parcel in the state (whether owned by the government, corporate bodies or individuals).

The judge made this pronouncement while delivering judgement in a suit marked FHC/L/CS/1789/2020, filed by seven Surveyors, Adaranijo Ibikunle Ganiyu Rafiu, Aluko Kikelomo Sikirat (Mrs.), Adedeji Olarewaju, Adams Benjamin Olugbenga, Mekuleyi Oluseyi Samuel, Aliu Samuel, and Fashina Adedapo against the Surveyor General of Lagos State and 10 others. Meanwhile, Chairman of the PTA, Mr. Olusola Tokede, told The Guardian that bringing of the items by the students is universal in all Federal Government Colleges on resumption every session, stating that the payment of class dues and hostel dues are internal arrangements of the school. Read more

Insecurity: Northern govs, traditional rulers back creation of state police (Leadership)

To contain the high level of insecurity in Nigeria, especially in the North, governors and traditional rulers from the region have thrown their weight behind the establishment of state police.

Northern Governors’ Forum (NoGF) yesterday met with the Northern Traditional Rulers Council (NTRC) in Abuja and came out with a resolution calling for the establishment of state police to tackle security challenges in the region and the nation as a whole.

LEADERSHIP reports that calls for the police force to be set up and run at the state levels have been usually rebuffed by lawmakers in the National Assembly during the constitution amendment processes, on the fear that they could be abused by governors.

But, according to the communique issued at the end of their meeting held at Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, the Northern political and traditional leaders reviewed the security situation in the North and other matters relating to its development and resolved to support the amendment of the constitution to accommodate the establishment of state police.
