Lagos Assembly reconstitutes committees (Nation)
Months after the dissolution of its standing committees, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa has announced the reconstitution of the committees of the House. Announcing the new committees during plenary yesterday Obasa revealed that while he would head the Selection Committee, the Chief Whip of the House, Hon. Rotimi Abiru would be the Chairman of the Business Rules and Ethics Committee. Other committee chairmen are Agriculture, Hon. Rasheed Makinde, Health Services, Hon. Akeem Shokunle, House Services, Hon. Fatai Oluwa, Local Government and Community Affairs, Hon. Rotimi Olowo, Environment, Hon. Dayo Saka-Fafunmi and Works and Infrastructure, Hon. Abiodun Tobun. Lagos to Sign Concession Agreement on Seme-Badagry Expressway (ThisDay)
The Lagos State Government yesterday disclosed that it would soon sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a consortium of investors on the construction of the Seme-Badagry expressway. Also, the state government directed that the completed portions of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway from Eric Moore to Okokomaiko be opened for public use following the completion of works by the contractor. These are contained in a statement by the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr. Ade Akinsanya, noting that the state Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode was touched by the discomfort being experienced by the motoring public on the Lagos-Badagry expressway. Rejection of children with disabilities not right –LASG (Punch)
The Lagos State Government has called on parents not to ignore children with disabilities. The government also said such children should be given access to education and other opportunities. The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development, Mr Hakeem Muri-Okunola, said this on Tuesday at a quiz competition among special schools held at the Adeyemi Bero Hall, Ikeja, adding that there was ability in disability. Party’s Constitution is Supreme – Lagos PDP Chair (Independent)
Hon. Moshood Adegoke Salvador, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chairman in Lagos State has said that the party is prepared to win all seats in the 2019 general elections. Salvador who was addressing the party members in Ojo local government area (LGA) of the state, also stressed that PDP would shun all forms of impunity by adhering strictly to its constitution. He said that PDP would instil discipline and work with serious minded people that would be ready to commit their time and money to win elections. Read more
Govt promises to create 1,000 jobs (Punch)
The Lagos State Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Mrs Uzamat Akinbile-Yusuf, has said the government would create over 1,000 jobs through the ongoing ‘Mindset Re-orientation and Employability Skills Training.’ She said the participants would either get direct employment by potential employers or become self-employed and create jobs for others. The commissioner, who said this on Tuesday in Ikeja at the training programme, which was organised for 500 unemployed youths, lamented that the rate of unemployment was saddening. Read more
Prof JP Clark’s international conference begins in Lagos (Guardian)
The first Prof. John Pepper Clark International Conference will hold from today, July 11, through 14, 2018 at University of Lagos, Nigeria. It has as theme ‘Connecting the Local and Global Across Literary Genres.’ Its conveners are Prof. Hope Eghagha of the University of Lagos and Dr. G. Oty Agbajoh-Laoye, of Monmouth University, USA. This international conference will address a variety of themes, ranging from the indigenous and communal, to broader contemporary issues like the African Diaspora, global Africa, the local and global, issues and dimensions across and within the micro and macro aspects of the writings of J. Lagos Splashes N10m on Schools Debate Finalists (ThisDay)
It was celebration all the way recently, as winners of the Lagos State schools debate season IX in the primary, junior and secondary school’s categories were rewarded with cash prizes of one million naira each, while the first and second runners up received N750,000 and N500,000 respectively. Agbede Senior Secondary School, Ikorodu, emerged the winner of the debate beating Vetland Senior Grammar School Agege and Oregun High School to the second and third positions, respectively. Community Junior High School, Alapere also won the junior secondary category beating Lagos State Model Junior College, Igbonla and Alimosho Junior Grammar School, Alimosho to the first and second positions, respectively. Orphanage gets free Medicare, foodstuffs (Nation)
Our Daily Manna (ODM) Ministry has donated food stuffs and provisions to an orphanage, Hearts of Gold Children’s Hospice, in Lagos. It also offered the orphanage free medical care. ODM leader Bishop Chris Kwakpovwe said the outreach took place simultaneously in Lekki and Ogudu in Lagos State and in 100 centres across the world where the group has branches. Medications, rice, noodles, biscuits, eggs, cornflakes, milk, sugar, groundnut palm oil, and toiletries, among others, were given out. Kwakpovwe said the gesture was a directive from God to put smiles on the faces of the less-privileged and to give them hope for the future. Read more
Gunmen shoot at NBA chief (Nation)
Unknown gunmen allegedly shot at the National Welfare Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr. Adesina Adegbite, wounding him in the head. Adegbite said he suspected the gunmen were kidnappers. The incident occurred on Friday near OPIC Estate off the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Adegbite told The Nation that after watching the World Cup match between England and Sweden, he went to Ikeja to buy roasted meat (Suya). He said: “I drove in my Cadillac Escalade Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) and went to Allen Junction to buy Suya. I did not stop anywhere along the way. Nobody also knew I was going to buy Suya. Lagos Assembly to assess LGAs, LCDAs (Independent)
Lagos House of Assembly has resolved to assess the activities of the 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the state. This was consequent upon a motion moved by Moshood Oshun (Lagos Mainland II), among others, that the LGAs and LCDAs be assessed one year after the election of the chairmen and councillors. Oshun said the local governments were regarded as the extension of the state in the area of development, as they were given allocation both by the Federal Government and the state governments. Many injured as transport workers clash at park (Nation)
Many persons were yesterday injured after hoodlums went berserk at the Maza-Maza Motor Park, Mile Two, Lagos. It was gathered that the fight, which started on Monday morning, almost snowballed into an ethnic duel between factions of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW). Our correspondent learnt that violence erupted after some aggrieved members attempted to impeach the NURTW leader in the area identified simply as Emma. Their plot, it was gathered, was rebuffed by a faction loyal to the leader. According to a driver, who declined to state his name, violence erupted in no time, with the factions wielding dangerous weapons such as guns and cutlasses. Read more
4 held for ‘diverting tiles worth N10m’(Nation)
The police have arrested four persons for allegedly forging documents and diverting floor tiles and other building materials worth N10million. Ganiyu Yusuf, 62, Femi Adewara, 51, Ibrahim Suleimon, 30 and Akeem Abdullahi, 48, were arrested on July 4, after they allegedly diverted a 20-foot container carrying the items. It was gathered that the suspects diverted the container from Apapa Port and emptied its content at a shop in Iddo Terminal. According to Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal, the suspects forged documents to enable them move the truck from the port. Read more
Lagos to upgrade community stadia to int’l standard — LSSC (Vanguard)
The Director-General of Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), Babatunde Bank-Anthony, has said the government had given approval to upgrade all the community stadia to international standard. Bank-Anthony made the revelation in an interview with newsmen on Wednesday in Lagos while commenting on the various ongoing works in stadia across the state. He said the state with a population of about 18 million should afford better sports structures which would be of international standard. “What we are doing now is to upgrade all our community stadiums to international standard, Campos mini stadium has already be given a facelift, the Isheri community stadium will also be upgraded.
