Lagos Assembly removes two principal officers, suspends two members (Nation)
The Lagos State House of Assembly has suspended its Chief Whip Hon. Rotimi Abiru and Deputy Majority Leader, Hon. Olumuyiwa Jimoh.
Two members of the Assembly, Hon. Moshood Oshun (Lagos Mainland Constituency 2) and Hon. Kazeem Raheem Adewale (Ibeju Lekki Constituency 2) were suspended indefinitely during plenary on Monday.
In announcing suspension of the members, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa said the Assembly is the hope of the people and the heartbeat of democracy and should be well guided.
“I hereby invoke Section 68 and Section 70 4 (a, b) 2 and 3 of the House rules in respect of gross misconduct, insurbodination and action that can destablise this House, I hereby move that Hon. Moshood Oshun and Hon. Raheem Adewale be placed on suspension indefinitely,” the Speaker said. Read more
16-year-old girl stabs father’s friend to death to ‘escape’ rape (Guardian)
Detectives at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) are probing the mystery behind the killing of 49-year-old Babatunde Ishola by a 16-year-old Senior Secondary student. Babatunde, before he was allegedly murdered by his friend’s daughter, Timilehin Taiwo, was a security guard in a school at Aboru, outskirts of Lagos State.
He was stabbed to death by Taiwo, of No. 10, Olalemide Street, Aboru. Homicide detectives, led by the Divisional Police Officer, Oke Odo, visited the crime scene at Ogundele Street, Aboru, where the body of the man was found lying in the pool of his blood at about 3:00p.m. on Saturday.
According to the spokesman of the police command, Bala Elkana, “the body was evacuated to the hospital for post-mortem examination. The suspect was arrested and the knife she used in stabbing the deceased person was recovered. Read more

Bayero named new Emir of Kano (Nation)
Kano State Government has announced Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero as the new Emir of Kano. Bayero, the son of late Emir Ado Bayero, replaces Muhammad Sanusi 11, who was dethroned and banished to Nasarawa.
His Highness, Aminu Ado Bayero, the Emir of Bichi and son of late Emir Abdullahi Ado Bayero has been appointed the new Emir of Kano by Kano state government.
Announcing his appointment on Monday, Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Usman Alhaji, said Aminu Ado Bayero’s appointment was as a result of recommendations by the four kingmakers of Kano Emirate Council.
He said the new appointment is backed by Section 11 (1) of the Kano Emirate Council Law 2019.
The four kingmakers, present during the announcement were: Alhaji Mutari Adnan, Sarkin Bai of Kano, Alhaji Abdullahi Sarki Yola, Alhaji Yusuf Labahani Cigari and Alhaji Bello Abubakar. Read more

The President Muhammadu Buhari administration is the worst in the nation’s history, Presiding Bishop of Living Faith Church Worldwide also known as Winners Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo, has declared.
He also dismissed the hate speech bill sponsored by Senator Sabi Abdullahi as the most ridiculous.
Oyedepo spoke on Sunday in a sermon during the second service of the church at the Faith Tabernacle, Ota, Ogun State.

IWD: We Need More Women In Government – NCWS (Vanguard)
The National Council for Women Societies, NCWS, have expressed displeasure over inadequate representation of women in public offices when compared to their male counterpart.
This came as the group distributed 866 sanitary pads to female secondary school students in Jalingo, Taraba state capital.
National Vice President of the group, North East Zone, Lami Adamu Lau who spoke Monday in Jalingo, at a rally to mark International Women’s Day, IWD, solicited more support for women in politics.

Plateau Government to resume monthly sanitation in May (Guardian)
The Plateau Government will resume its monthly sanitation in May, according to the Commissioner of Environment, Alhaji Yakubu Usman.
Usman, who made the disclosure in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Jos, said the exercise was earlier suspended because of security challenges in the state.
He said the State Government would engage in public-private partnership for the smooth take-off and sustenance of the exercise. Read more

As members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, embarked on a two-week warning strike on Monday, the union has said its grouse is not only about enrolment on the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System, IPPIS.
Speaking in a chat with Vanguard on Monday, the ASUU Chairman, University of Lagos, UNILAG, chapter, Dr Dele Ashiru, said other pressing matters necessitated the declaration of the warning strike.
“We want the government to implement the Memorandum of Action agreed to concerning the 2009 Agreement endorsed by the union and the government. Also, we seek better funding of our universities, the Earned Allowances for university workers is still there. Uduk: SEC working on guidelines to strengthen corporate governance (ThisDay)
The Acting Director General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Ms. Mary Uduk, has disclosed that the commission is currently, “working on a guideline to strengthen corporate governance of public companies in the country.”
This is just as Uduk stated that the Finance Act 2020, recently signed into law by the president has removed a lot of obstacles associated with securities lending.

Twitter strikes deal with investors, ending bid to oust Dorsey (Guardian)
Twitter unveiled a deal with key investors Monday to end an effort to oust chief executive Jack Dorsey, creating a new committee on the board of directors to keep tabs on company leadership.
The plan calls for a fresh $1 billion investment in Twitter by private equity group Silver Lake, and a pledge by the social media group to launch a $2 billion share repurchase plan.

Joe Biden is sitting on a double-digit lead over Sen. Bernie Sanders in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination, according to a new national survey released on Monday — on the eve of voters in six states going to the polls.
The CNN survey, taken after the former vice president’s romp through the Super Tuesday states last week, shows Biden has the support of 52 percent of Democrats or Democratic-leaning independents compared to Sanders’ 36 percent.
Biden’s success in winning 10 of 14 states on Super Tuesday was reflected in his favorability rating, which climbed from 39 percent in December to 48 percent. Read more
Max Von Sydow: The Exorcist and The Seventh Seal actor dies aged 90 (BBC)
Actor Max Von Sydow, who appeared in films and TV series including The Exorcist, Flash Gordon and Game of Thrones, has died at the age of 90.
His family announced “with a broken heart and infinite sadness” that the Swedish-born actor died on Sunday.
Von Sydow’s other film credits included Hannah and Her Sisters, The Seventh Seal and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
He was nominated for two Oscars during his career – including best actor in 1988 for Pelle the Conqueror. Read more

A singer plunged 10 feet from a theatre stage in Russia and broke her foot mid-song – only to carry on her performance while lying prone on the floor. Anastasia Vishnevskaya, 30, dramatically fell into the orchestra pit during a packed concert in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia, but the crowd were initially unable to see what had happened to her. She tried in vain to stand later on in the song, before finding out she had fractured her foot and suffered major bruising. A member of the orchestra had helped her onto a chair after her fall and the pit was raised to allow the 1,375-strong audience to see by the end of her track, called ‘100 hours of happiness’. Wetherspoon pub defends installing CCTV in toilet after woman spots camera (Mirror)
A Wetherspoon pub has defended installing a camera inside female toilets after a woman claimed it was “an invasion of privacy”.
The Five Swans in Newcastle upon Tyne say the camera, which was put in as part of a £1million refurbishment, cannot into the cubicle.
Bosses say the camera is nothing to worry about, but one customer was caught off-guard when she was out with her husband, ChronicleLive reports.
The customer, who asked not to be named, feared the camera was an “invasion of privacy”. Read more

Ezzeldin Bahader needs to play two full games to qualify as an entry in the Guinness World Records book.

The Indian Wells tennis tournament has been postponed after the health department declared a public health emergency for the Coachella Valley after a confirmed case of coronavirus locally. The Californian tournament, one of the biggest events on the calendar outside of the Grand Slams, was due to begin on Monday but will no longer go ahead as planned. ‘We are very disappointed that the tournament will not take place, but the health and safety of the local community, fans, players, volunteers, sponsors, employees, vendors, and everyone involved with the event is of paramount importance,’ said tournament director Tommy Haas. Greece’s Olympic Committee have barred people from attending the dress rehearsal in Olympia on Wednesday.
They’ll also be excluded from the widely broadcast ceremony taking place at the ancient site on Thursday.
