The art world is abuzz with anticipation as the Lagos Biennial announces its return in 2024, promising an intriguing exploration of the theme “REFUGE.” This marks the fourth edition of this international exhibition of contemporary art, set to take place from February 3 to February 10, 2024, at the historic Tafawa Balewa Square on Lagos Island.
At the heart of the event lies a profound exploration of the concept of the nation-state, with a critical reflection on the significance of Tafawa Balewa Square. Named after Nigeria’s first Prime Minister, this square witnessed the country’s declaration of independence in 1960 and played host to the renowned Festival of Black Arts and Culture FESTAC ’77. Now, it serves as the canvas for artists to ponder the ever-evolving nature of refuge, especially in the face of today’s systemic crises and the urgent call for climate justice.
The 2024 Lagos Biennial, with Kathryn Weir and Folakunle Oshun serving as artistic directors,:is set to be a multifaceted affair, featuring a diverse range of exhibitions, projects, and events. Among the highlights are “REFUGE teams,” a collection of collaborative platforms born from the online 3rd edition of the biennial in 2021. These teams will respond uniquely to the theme of REFUGE.
Another captivating segment is “Gregarious architectures,” showcasing special projects and existing works that engage with the concept of refuge and the informality inherent in building new architectures of community.
One of the most anticipated aspects of the biennial is “CAPTCHA,” an exhibition project curated by Egyptian art historian, curator, and educator Sarah Rifky, along with Lagos Biennial co-artistic director Kathryn Weir. “CAPTCHA” delves into the intricacies of perception and strategies of finding refuge in plain sight.
Adding to the excitement is “Worldmade communities,” a convening for those invested in cultural infrastructure that fosters capacity and alliances across Africa and beyond. Curated by Sarah Rifky and Kathryn Weir, with interventions by Romi Crawford and the New Art School Modality, this programme aims to reclaim and celebrate contemporary art as a community and world-building practice.
The 2024 Lagos Biennial is made possible with the support of the Guest Artist Space G.A.S Foundation and A White Space Creative Agency AWCA Lagos. Additionally, Lagos Biennial proudly announces a three-edition partnership with Royal Air Maroc as the Official Travel Carrier.
