Lagos budget: Speaker tells Sanwo-Olu to prioritise rail projects (Sun)

Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa has urged Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu to give priority to rail infrastructure to develop the state.

Obasa gave the advice at the budget presentation entitled “The Budget of Awakening to a Greater Lagos” by the governor on Friday in Ikeja.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports Sanwo-Olu had presented the year 2020 proposed budget of N1.168 trillion to the assembly. Read more

Another fire guts building in Ebute-Metta (Vanguard)

Barely 24 hours after rescue team finally put out a two-day inferno that gutted a building at Number 43 Martins Street, Balogun Market, Lagos Island, another inferno Friday, broke out in Kano Street, Ebute Metta, Lagos Mainland Local Government Area, LGA, and destroyed several shanties. Fortunately, no casualty recorded.

Director-General of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the fire incident. Read more

Lagos–Badagry Expressway repairs: LASG announces traffic diversion (Sun)

The Lagos State Government has announced traffic diversion from the major carriageway to the service lane on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway from Nov.9 to Nov.10.

Special Adviser, to Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Works and Infrastructure, Mrs Aramide Adeyoye to said that the diversion was to enable the contractors launch beams at the Alakija Interchange Bridge.

Adeyoye in a statement signed by Mr Adesegun Ogundeji, Deputy Director, and Public Affairs of the ministry appealed to motorists and road users on the axis to bear with government. Read more

Lagos confirms 400 cases of gastroenteritis (Vanguard)

The Lagos State Ministry of Health has confirmed the outbreak of gastroenteritis in the state with 400 cases and 11 deaths recorded so far.

Announcing this yesterday, the State Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi dismissed social media report that over 169 deaths have been recorded as a result of the outback.

According to him, 400 cases have been recorded in health facilities in the affected Local Government Areas, LGAS of Lagos Nigeria ― 370 of these cases have been treated and discharged. Read more

Violence breaks out in Lagos market, as task force chase traders (Punch)

Violence broke out on Friday after men of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit (Task Force) invaded Jakande Market, Ketu.

The PUNCH gathered that the men, who were accompanied by security operatives, attempted to dislodge traders and destroy some shanties in the market.

As some of the traders resisted, a policeman was said to have fired a bullet, which hit one of the residents. Read more

Ikosi-Ketu Fruit Market demolished for proposed new N2.8bn modern market (NewTelegraph)

The popular Ikosi-Ketu Fruit Market in Ketu area of Lagos was on Friday demolished to pave way for a modern market.

New Telegraph learnt that the Ikosi-Isheri Local Council Development Area, LCDA, has awarded the reconstruction of the dilapidated market to Total Value Integrated Service Limited, which is committing about N2.8 billion to reconstruct the market.

Around 10.00am two bulldozers, escorted by policemen, mostly from the state task force stormed the market to ensure that there was no resistance during the demolition. Read more

A 39-year-old husband, Ibrahim Anifowoshe, on Friday told a Lagos Island Customary Court while seeking dissolution of his 12-year-old marriage that his wife denied him sex, disrespected and embarrassed him in the presence of his friends. Anifowoshe, a National Union of Road Transport Worker (NURTW) official, told the court that his wife, Modinat embarrassed him at his work place in the presence of his colleagues. Read more

Kukah cautions FG on social media regulation (Vanguard)

The Bishop of Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Bishop Matthew Kukah has cautioned the Federal Government against planned regulation of social media saying it could hinder freedom of speech. Kukah disclosed this on Friday while speaking at the convocation lecture of Achievers University, Owo in Ondo State.

The lecture was titled: “Some reasons why Nigeria has failed to achieve greatness”. Senate probes alleged shady deals by security outfits at Lagos ports (Guardian)

The Senate yesterday mandated its committees on Navy, Marine Transport and Finance to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the activities of Messrs OMLS Limited and other security agencies at the Safe Anchorage Area of the Lagos ports.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the team is to determine the legality of its operations and revenue and report back to the upper legislative chamber in four weeks.

The resolution was a sequel to a motion sponsored by George Sekibo (PDP-Rivers East) during plenary on “Illegal security activities by Messrs OMLS Limited at the Safe Anchorage Area of Lagos ports and the need to investigate their excesses.” Read more

The Presidency on Friday confirmed an ”on-going overhaul in the seat of government” with some appointments revoked while the appointments of some officials that served in President Muhammadu Buhari’s first tenure had not been renewed. The Federal Government has declared Monday as Public Holiday to mark the 2019 Eid-ul-Mawlud in commemoration of the birthday of the Holy Prophet Muhammad.

Mr Mohammed Manga, Director Press and Public Relations of the Ministry of Interior, announced this in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

He said the Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, congratulated the Muslim faithful on the occasion and enjoined them to live within the virtues and teachings of the Prophet.

Essex lorry deaths: 10 teenagers were among 39 victims, say police (Guardian)

Ten teenagers were among the 39 Vietnamese people found dead in a refrigerated lorry in Essex last month, and the youngest of them were two 15-year-old boys, police have revealed.

Detectives have completed identification of the bodies found in the container, which was shipped from Belgium to Essex on 23 October, and confirmed that all the victims were Vietnamese, 31 males and eight females. As well as the two children aged 15, Dinh Dinh Binh and Nguyen Huy Hung, there were three 19-year-olds, four 18-year-olds, and one 17-year-old. Read more
