Lagos cholera death toll hits 21, cases rise to 401 (Punch)
The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Health, Dr Kemi Ogunyemi, said that the suspected cholera cases in the state have increased to 401 with 21 fatalities.
The statement noted that Lagos Island, Kosofe, and Eti Osa recorded the highest numbers.
This was disclosed in a statement on Thursday signed by the Director of Public Affairs at the state Ministry of Health, Tunbosun Ogunbanwo. Read more
Rivers Crisis: Police barricade of LG secretariats to continue, says IGP (Channels)
The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has directed the continuation of the police barricade on local government secretariats in Rivers State to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
IGP Egbetokun gave the directive while fielding questions from journalists in Abuja on the sideline of a Conference with Commissioners of Police and other Senior Officers.
He said the police will continue to occupy the secretariats until a court of competent jurisdiction delivers judgment on the local government crisis in Rivers State. Read more

Outrage at continued detention of Nigerian professors in Cameroon (Sun)
The prolonged detention of several Nigerian professors by the Cameroon government for the past five years has sparked outrage.
The professors were arrested in Abuja on January 5, 2018, by security agents and later repatriated to Cameroon, tried by a military tribunal, and sentenced to life imprisonment at the Kondengui Maximum Security Prison.
Former House of Representatives member Abdul Oroh, in a statement yesterday, called on President Bola Tinubu to employ diplomatic and political measures to ensure the release of the detainees. Read more

The Federal High Court in Kano will on Thursday, June 20 deliver rulings in the suit seeking to determine the validity of the Kano Emirates Council Repeal Law 2024.
The law was used by the state governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, to dethrone the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, and also to reverse the creation of four emirates, Bichi, Rano Karaye and Gaya, by his predecessor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
The law was also relied upon to re-appoint the 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, who was dethroned by Ganduje in 2020, as the 16th Emir of Kano. Read more
Crisis rocks Lagos Shippers’ Association over N13b judgement fund (Leadership)
Crisis is currently rocking the Shippers’ Association of Lagos State (SALS), over a N13 billion judgement fund, part of a larger N3 trillion fund payable into the Cargo Defense Fund account (CDF).
The judgement fund, it was gathered, was a sum being expected from shipping companies and terminal operators as a refund from Shipping Line Agency Commission ( SLAC) and progressive charges.

1 killed, 2 policemen injured as hoodlums unleash mayhem in Kano (Vanguard)
Some suspected hoodlums have unleashed mayhem on Jaen Makera quarters in Kano metropolis, killing one person and injuring two policemen.
The outgoing Commissioner of police, AIG Usaini Gumel disclosed this in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Kano.
He said that the suspects killed Muktar Garba, also known as Babalia during the incident. Read more
1 arrested for vandalising barricade in Lagos (Punch)
Officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Environment, on Wednesday, said they arrested a man (identity undisclosed) for allegedly vandalising iron barricades along the Odo Iya Alaro area of the state.
The ministry’s Director of Public Affairs, Kunle Adesina, in a statement made available to PUNCH Metro, disclosed that the suspect was arrested on Saturday while vandalising the iron reinforcement that served as a barricade between the Ogudu Garden Valley Scheme and the System One Channel in the area.
He added that upon interrogation, the suspect confessed that he often sold vandalised items to mobile scrap buyers. Read more

Rapper Travis Scott has been arrested on charges of trespassing and disorderly intoxication in Miami, according to jail records.
Scott was arrested Thursday local time in Miami-Dade County, in south-east Florida, according to Miami-Dade County Corrections booking records.
Travis Scott, whose real name is Jacques Bermon Webster II, was charged with trespassing on property after a warning and disorderly intoxication. Read more

Police in Kenya have fired tear gas and used water cannon to disperse protesters gathering near parliament in the capital to demonstrate against planned tax hikes that many fear will worsen the cost-of-living crisis.
Tense scenes played out in Nairobi on Thursday as hundreds took to the streets in opposition to a finance bill, which proposes introducing new taxes and levies that would increase the price of basic goods.

Queen Catalog to be acquired by Sony Music for £1b (Variety)
The Queen music catalog, along with a number of other rights, is in the process of being acquired by Sony Music for £1 billion (around $1.27 billion), two sources confirm to Variety. The news was first reported by Hits; according to their report, the only revenue not covered in the deal is for live performances, which founding members Brian May and Roger Taylor, who still actively tour with singer Adam Lambert, will retain.

A second person has been killed in a New Mexico wildfire as wild weather rampages across the US.
Heavy rain and hail fell Wednesday around an evacuated village in New Mexico threatened by wildfires that have killed at least two people and damaged more than 1,400 structures, offering the hope of some assistance for firefighters but adding the threat of high winds and flash floods.
Air tankers dropped water and red retardant earlier on the pair of fires growing in a mountainous part of the state where earlier in the week residents of the village of Ruidoso were forced to flee the larger of the two blazes with little notice. New Mexico State Police spokesman Wilson Silver said Wednesday that officers discovered the skeletal remains of an unidentified second person in the driver seat of a burned vehicle. Sir Ian McKellen has announced he will not be returning to the play Player Kings after falling off stage during a performance earlier this week.
On Monday night, the 85-year-old actor was appearing in the current West End adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Henry IV Parts One and Two, when he fell off the stage and was later admitted to hospital.
