Lagos communities get school 29 years after (Nation)

Twenty-six communities in the Resettlement Area of Eti-Osa East Local Council Development Area of Lagos on Thursday got the first primary school after 29 years.

The people were moved from old Maroko in 1989 to Ilaje for developmental purposes according to the state government.

Maroko was what is today known as Oniru Royal Estate; some parts of Victoria Island and Lekki Phase one.

The communities’ leaders and residents rolled out the drums to celebrate the birth of a school in their area.

Their children, The Nation learnt, have been travelling miles to other communities such as Ajah and Ogombo to study. Read more

Is Buhari really marrying another wife? (Guardian)

A video purportedly showing Nigeria’s First Lady Aisha Buhari locked up in a room in Aso Villa after she returned from London on Thursday has been shared and viewed tens of thousand times on the social media.

Since Wednesday, social media has been awash with claims that the Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari will be getting married to Sadiya Umar Farouq, minister of humanitarian affairs, disaster management and social development, because Mrs Buhari has been away for months.

Mrs Buhari left the country early August to Saudi Arabia to perform hajj (Muslim pilgrimage) and has not returned since then. Read more

Appeal Court sends Melaye packing, orders fresh election (Vanguard)

The Court of Appeal in Abuja on Friday quashed the victory of Senator Dino Melaye as the Senator for Kogi West.

A three-member panel of the Appeal Court, led by Justice Yahaya Dantijo in a unanimous decision affirmed the judgment of the tribunal who had nullified Melaye’s victory and order for reelection. Melaye, through his counsel, Joash Amputan, had on September 5, 2019, asked the appellant court to set aside the tribunals judgment because they were a miscarriage of justice. Read more

Women top men in NOUN enrolment – Okebukola (Vanguard)

Women are currently leading men in enrollment at the National Open University of Nigeria, NOUN, as the quest of Nigerians for higher education keeps growing.

NOUN said reports at its disposal indicated that at the moment, women population at the university stands at 53 per cent against that of the male which trailed behind with 47 per cent.

Chairman of Council of NOUN, Prof. Peter Okebukola, at a press conference, Thursday evening in Abuja, where he said the Council of the institution had approved the recommendation of the Senate for the appointment of Prof. Uduma Orji of the Department of Philosophy as the new Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), said the university was gratified over the development. Budget 2020: NASS give MDAs October to conclude defence or risk running without budget (Independent)

The National Assembly on Friday, warned Ministries Department and Agencies (MDAs) to make themselves available before October ending, to defend their proposals in the 2020 budget, or risk running without a budget after the exercise in October.

Senator Ahmed Lawan, Senate President and Chairman of the National Assembly, who gave the warning in an address at the unveiling of the House of Representatives’ Legislative Agenda, in Abuja, said that there would be no second chance fo any defaulter.

Lawan disclosed that the National Assembly was determined to get the budget passed before the year-end. Read more

Suicide not a crime – Yaba Psychiatric Hospital (Vanguard)

…says victims need support not prosecution

As the World Health Organisation, WHO, says every 40 seconds a person dies of suicide, psychiatric doctors at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital Yaba, FNPHY, Lagos have called for the decriminalisation of suicide, saying the victims need support and not prosecution.

According to WHO, close to 800, 000 people die due to suicide every year and suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15-29 year-olds in the world currently. Read more

Reps okay 2020 budget for second reading (Sun)

The House of Representatives, yesterday, passed the 2020 Appropriation Bill for second reading, after it concluded debate on the general principles of  the bill.

The House also adjourned plenary to October 29 to enable heads of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) appear before the various standing committees, which are to serve as Appropriations sub committees, for the defence of their budget estimates. Read more

30 escape death as luxury bus catches fire along Enugu-Onitsha road (Sun)

No fewer than 30 people escaped death when a luxury bus belonging to a popular transportation company carrying  passengers from Enugu to Lagos, caught fire  at Igbariam axis of the Enugu-Onitsha expressway.

It was gathered that one of the tyres got heated, exploded and burst into flame. The fire spread to other parts of the bus.

No life was lost as the passengers were immediately evacuated. Read more

Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC), Prof. Itse Sagay, on Thursday disclosed that so far about N1 trillio1n has been recovered locally from proceeds of corruption perpetuated by Nigerians.

He said the panel has also stopped N400 billion yearly loss to fuel subsidy.

Sagay made the disclosure while fielding questions from State House Correspondents after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, yesterday. Read more

Nigeria’s oil output adds 400,000 bpd as Trans Forcados returns (Vanguard)

There are indications that Nigeria’s oil production has increased by 400,000 barrels per day, bpd, with the restoration of Trans Forcados Pipeline.

The pipeline which has the capacity to deliver about 400,000 bpd was vandalised some weeks ago, a development which stalled the export of Bonny Light, Nigeria’s premium oil grade to the global market. Spokesman of Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), Bamidele Odugbesan, who confirmed the development yesterday, said: “It is true that the rehabilitation of Trans Forcados Pipeline has been completed, thus enabling us to lift the force majeure earlier placed on export. We are currently producing and exporting through the pipeline to the global market.” Read more

Court remands student for killing 17-year-old boy (Independent)

A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kano, on Friday ordered that a 22-year-old student, Nu’uman Abubakar, who allegedly killed a 17-year-old boy, be remanded in a correctional centre.

Abubakar, a student of the Kano State University of Technology, Wudil, is charged with culpable homicide.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Muhammad Idris, adjourned the matter until Oct.28, for mention. Read more

Sexual harassment: FG to collaborate with police, NUC (Vanguard)

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), says it will begin collaborate with the Nigeria Police Force and the National Universities Commission (NUC) to curb cases of sexual harassment in universities.

36 Yoruba groups meet in Ibadan (Nation)

No fewer than 36 self-determination groups from the Southwest states on Thursday met in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, to harmonise their positions on the way forward for the region, especially in the wake of the security and economic challenges facing the region.

The meeting christened: “Yoruba World Congress (introductory conference),” was attended by some of the groups, including factional leaders and members of the Oodua Peoples Congress, the Agbekoya, Yoruba Liberation Movement and the Yoruba Afenifere Youth Council, among others. Read more

Two journalists arrested for criticising Turkey’s military action in Syria (Independent)

The International Press Institute (IPI) today condemned Turkey’s arrest of Hakan Demir, online editor for the independent newspaper BirGün, and Fatih Gökhan Diler, managing editor of the news site Diken. The two detentions were part of a wave of arrests targeting critics of Turkey’s military operation across the Syrian border, which started yesterday.

Turkish police swiftly launched investigations against 78 people for their critical views and news articles shared on social media, including Demir. After a 4 am police raid on his home, Demir was reportedly detained and brought to a police station where he was held for hours without access to his lawyers. Read more

China bridge collapse kills three, injures two (Vanguard)

Three people died and two were injured when a highway bridge collapsed on Thursday in China’s eastern province of Jiangsu, state news agency Xinhua said. The bridge, in the city of Wuxi, fell on three cars below, killing three people in two of the vehicles, although the third vehicle was empty, it added. Three cars and two trucks fell from the bridge as it collapsed. Read more

Alex Iwobi pleads with Cherries star to play for Nigeria (Independent)
