Lagos community seeks relocation of tank farms for safety reasons (Guardian)
Satellite Town residents in Lagos, yesterday stoutly rejected the siting of tank farms in the densely residential area created in 1976.
The residents under the auspices of Satellite Town Forum, said the rejection was as a result of safety issues, which the siting of such facility could pose to them.
Speaking through their chairman, Mr. Governor Imitini, the residents said despite several meetings with all relevant stakeholders, in respect of the project, there was no concrete measure to curtail fire outbreak in the event of its occurrence.
Lamenting that the community, which was once a resident of choice in 1979 has become a slum with failed infrastructure, he questioned the rationale behind the siting of the farm tanks and proposed tanker parks in the town. Read more
Driver rewarded for returning bag containing millions of Naira at Lagos airport (Tribune)
The Management of Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited (BASL), operators of the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal Two (MMA2), has rewarded one of its drivers, Mr. Eluu Emmanuel for returning a bag containing bundles of local, foreign currencies, jewelry, and other valuables worth millions of Naira.
The bag was left inside one of the passenger buses used for conveying travellers at the Airside of MMA2.
While narrating his experience, Mr. Eluu said he was returning to the Operations office when he discovered a bag left by one of the passengers and decided to do the right thing by escalating the development to his immediate Supervisor, who in turn related it to Aviation Security (AVSEC) Supervisor in charge of the Airside operation.. Lagos to borrow N25b as Sanwo-Olu signs green bond market agreement (Guardian)
Lagos State becomes the first sub-national government to activate the framework for the unlocking of the $1 trillion Nigerian Green Bond Market Development Programme to finance key infrastructure projects.
On Tuesday, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with FMDQ Group and Financial Sector Deepening (FSD) Africa, which are the programme’s implementing partners on the proposed N25 billion (over $60 million) financing.
In a statement, the historic event, held at the State House in Marina, came less than 24 hours after Lagos was upgraded to AAA(nga) rating from AA+(nga) by Fitch International for the State’s good standing on debt sustainability and resilience.
Sanwo-Olu said the green bond programme, being supported by the UK Agency for International Development (UK Aid), would raise the capacity of the State Government to deliver more key infrastructure and social projects that would keep Lagos on the path of prosperity. Read more

UNIBEN shut over students’ protest (Sun)
The management of the University of Benin has announced the closure of the institution following students’ protest over a N20,000 late school fees payment levy.
The students had on Monday protested the levy at the two campuses of the University, blocking the Ugbowo end of the Benin-Lagos road and Ekhehuan road, respectively, thereby creating vehicular traffic gridlock and forcing commuters to be stranded.
Consequently, the University in a statement Tuesday night said the Vice Chancellor has reviewed the agitation by a section of the students’ body and after due consultation, and in the overall interest of the general students’ body, has on behalf of Senate, approved the closure of the University with immediate effect. Kwara motorist slaps tricycle rider over broken car light, victim dies (Punch)
A motorist, Kayode Oluwatomi, has allegedly beaten a tricycle operator, Kola Adeyemi, to death in Ilorin, Kwara State, after the latter broke the parking light of his Honda Bullet car.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the incident happened on Monday around 5pm in the Gerin Alimi area of the metropolis.
Our correspondent learnt that Adeyemi, aka Daddy Samuel, hit the car, with number plate, BX 954 AJL, at the back, breaking the parking light, valued at N2,500.
A witness, who did not identify himself, said the tricycle rider begged to pay N2,000 for the damage, but the motorist rejected the money. Read more

The Federal Government has again assured Nigerians that all issues that led to the suspension of activities of the popular microblogging platform, Twitter, will be sorted out soon.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, gave the assurance while fielding questions from State House correspondents after the meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Mohammed, who declined to give a specific timeline on when the suspension would be lifted, said the ongoing discussions between government and Twitter had been “productive” and “respective”.
Asked on the latest on the Twitter ban in the country as he had promised on August 11 that the ban would be lifted very soon, the minister said: “I think even Twitter itself two days ago gave what I will call a progress report on our talks with them, and I think if I want to quote them rightly, it has been productive and quite respectful. Nigeria sets July 2022 for return of Benin artifacts by Germany (Punch)
Nigeria has agreed with Germany for hundreds of artefacts stolen during colonial times to be returned from July next year and is negotiating with other museums to repatriate more, an official said on Tuesday.
Thousands of pieces of Nigeria’s so-called Benin Bronzes — 16th to 18th century metal plaques and sculptures — were stolen from the palace of the ancient Benin Kingdom only to end up in museums across the US and Europe.
Nigeria plans to build a museum in Benin City in southern Edo State where it hopes to house the bronzes, seen as among the most highly regarded works of African art.
“We have agreed on a timeline that actual return will start next year, 2022, which is going to be around July, August,” Abba Tijani, director of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments said of the bronzes in Germany. Read more

Closing women’s mikvahs due to promiscuity and not men’s was a form of illegal gender-based discrimination and violated laws regarding freedom of religion.
A ruling issued by Jerusalem Chief Rabbi Shlomo Amar halted a long-standing custom of women, married and single, to immerse in a mikvah ritual bath the day before Yom Kippur to heighten their sense of spiritual purity.
Earlier this week, Amar sent a letter to Rabbi David Banino, head of the Jerusalem religious council’s mikvah department, telling him that mikvah directors and attendants should not allow women to immerse in the mikvaot they operate unless it is the correct night for them to immerse, according to Jewish family purity laws.
This would exclude married women, singles, divorcees and widows who wish to immerse in a mikvah for spiritual purposes ahead of Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. Read more

Newsom, a first-term governor beset by challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic, extreme drought and severe wildfires, boosted turnout among Democrats with a flurry of late campaigning and easily overcame the move by Republicans to recall him.

The World Anti-Doping Agency is to review whether cannabis should remain a banned substance.
The move follows American sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson missing the Tokyo Olympics after testing positive for the substance in June.
The 21-year-old later revealed she had used cannabis to help cope with the death of her biological mother.
Wada says the scientific review will begin next year and that cannabis will remain prohibited in 2022.

The world cross-country championships in Bathurst, Australia has been postponed to 2023 due to COVID-19 restrictions, the governing body World Athletics said Wednesday.
“The postponement is due to the biosecurity measures and travel restrictions currently in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19,” a statement said.
Originally scheduled for Feb. 19, 2022, the 44th edition of the event would now take place in Feb. 18, 2023.
