The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, on Sunday said that the state tested a total of 42,348 samples for COVID-19 as at July 3.

Abayomi, who made the disclosure on his Twitter account, said that of the 42,348 samples, 10,926 returned positive.

He said that 748 COVID-19 tests were conducted in the state on July 3, out of which 87 new cases were confirmed.

“Out of the total number of confirmed cases, 1,695 patients have since been discharged from the Lagos COVID-19 care centres following full recovery. Read more

The death of Rashidat Yusuf, from birth-related complications, has thrown the area into pensive-mood. While Rashidat’s husband, Tomori Yusuf, a welder, blames poverty for his wife’s death, residents of Ikola-Odunsi are wondering who the next casualty might be.

Rashidat’s infant, Enitan Yusuf, is currently three months old, but he will grow up without the privilege of being suckled by his birth mother, as the 38-year-old woman died eight days after delivery due to childbirth-related complications.

Presently offering Enitan the love and comfort he needs is Mrs. Caroline Sanusi, a woman his mother met by providence weeks before her death. Read more

Lagos appeals against indiscriminate refuse dumping (Nation)

As part of efforts to promote sustainability of roads, the Lagos State Government has reiterated the needs for residents to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drainages as doing so will reduce the life span of the various road infrastructures provided across the State.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Works and Infrastructure, Engineer Aramide Adeyoye, said this while inspecting urgent palliative works being carried out by Public Works Corporation on the Mile 2 section of Lagos – Badagry Expressway which has deteriorated.

According to the Special Adviser, “Though the rehabilitation and expansion work on the Lagos – Badagry Expressway is progressing as scheduled, it has become necessary to intervene and make the Mile 2 section of the road motor able for commuters plying the route”. Read more

Two stab man to death in Lagos dispute (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested two persons in the Fatade, Baruwa area of Ipaja for allegedly stabbing a 30-year-old man, Abiodun Rafiu, to death.

Our correspondent learnt that the suspects, identified only as Ademola and Uche, reportedly stabbed Rafiu with a bottle during altercation which occurred at their residence on Apostle Street, Fatade in the Baruwa area.

The matter was reported at the Ipaja Police Division by the mother of the deceased, identified as Yemisi Rafiu on June 13. Read more

Gunmen abduct Delta union leader (Nation)

Gunmen at the weekend abducted the chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Delta Chapter, Comrade Goodluck Ofobruku in Asaba, the Delta State Capital.

The Nation gathered the unionist was driving out of his house behind Immigration Office off  the Ughelli-Asaba expressway when he was abducted.

Secretary of the NLC in the state, Comrade Innocent Ofonyeade, said the Ofobruku was driving in NLC Sienna bus at about 8.00 p.m when he was kidnapped. Read more 

COVID-19: NCDC launches online course on infection control for health workers (Guardian)

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has launched an online course on infection prevention and control (ICP) for health workers, to reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection transmission in healthcare setting.

The Director-General of NCDC, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, on Sunday in Abuja, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the online course would be available to the general public, particularly the healthcare workers.

According to him, the programme is aimed at reducing the risk of transmission of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases while administering health care in the country. Read more

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has revealed the mode of operation through which the suspected Nigerian swindler Ramon Olorunwa Abbas alias Hushpuppi, and his gang were tracked until he was arrested in Dubai, United Arabs Emirates (UAE) on June 10.

Special agent Andrew John Innocenti, in an affidavit attached to the charges against Hushpuppi in the US, said the main suspect and others identified only as Coconspirator 1 and Coconspirator 2, used to hack into the computers of their targets and move money from one account to the other across the globe. Group wants direct payment of derivation fund to oil-producing communities (Guardian)

A group, Concerned Leaders of the Rivers State Oil and Gas Producing Communities has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to facilitate the payment of the 13% derivation fund directly to the people.

The group has also appealed to President Buhari to halt what it described as “illegal and unconstitutional” the payment of the fund through state governors, whom the leaders said are third line charge on the Federation Account, and pay same directly to the host communities through the proposed Presidential Derivation Committee (PDC) and State Implementation Committees (SIC). Scientists say coronavirus is airborne (VOA)

A report in The New York Times says a group of 239 scientists from 32 countries will publish an open letter to the World Health Organisation in a scientific journal this week. The scientists want WHO to revise its recommendations about how to avoid coronavirus infection.

The scientists say the coronavirus is airborne, meaning virus particles can hover in the air in indoor spaces and infect people when the particles are inhaled.

The WHO has said the virus is spread through larger respiratory droplets from an infected person’s coughs and sneezes, but which drop out of the air quickly because of their size. Read more

Kanye West says he’s joining presidential race, wins backing from Elon Musk (RT)

American rapper Kanye West, who has in the past been eviscerated by the left over his vocal support for US President Donald Trump, has said he’s launching his own presidential bid.

“We must now realise the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future. I am running for president of the United States! #2020VISION,” West wrote, breaking the news to nearly 30 million followers on Twitter on Saturday evening.

Although West did not elaborate further, leaving dumbfounded netizens wondering if he really means it or is just joking around, he has already secured some notable endorsements, including that of entrepreneur Elon Musk.

Japan flooding: 14 dead in flooded care home (BBC)

At least 16 people have died and a dozen are missing on Japan’s southern island of Kyushu as unprecedented rains cause flooding and landslides.

Fourteen victims were found in one nursing home which was inundated after a nearby river broke its banks.

The authorities have ordered more than 200,000 to evacuate and 10,000 soldiers are being sent to help rescuers. Read more

Al-Shabab militants abduct, kill Somali lawmaker (VOA)

A regional Somali lawmaker has been abducted and killed by al-Shabab militants near the town of Bal’ad, 30 kilometers north of Mogadishu.

Mohamed Mohamud Siyad was travelling in a vehicle from Jowhar town to the capital Mogadishu when he was abducted on Sunday, a security source told VOA Somali.

The vehicle Siyad was travelling in was stopped near the village of Gololey, north of Bal’ad. The militants drove the vehicle off the road. Read more

Coronavirus cost global economy 400m full-time jobs – ILO (RT)

Global working hours are expected to have plummeted by 14 pe rcent in the second quarter of 2020 as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, according to the International Labour Organization (ILO).

The fall is the equivalent to 400 million full-time job losses globally in the second quarter, based on a standard 48-hour working week. The ILO previously projected a 10.7 percent fall in working hours, or 305 million job losses, for the period.

According to the report, the Americas were the most affected region, with an estimated 18.3 percent drop in working hours, or 70 million full-time jobs. Read more

Tiger kills Zurich zookeeper in front of visitors and staff (BBC)

A Siberian tiger has attacked and killed a female zookeeper in Switzerland in front of visitors and zoo employees.

Staff rushed to her aid and eventually managed to draw the tiger out of the cage, but the 55-year-old keeper died at the scene, Zurich zoo said.

Visitors raised the alarm at about 13:20 (11:20 GMT) on Saturday.

An investigation is under way to determine why the zookeeper was in the cage at the same time as the tiger. Read more

Teenage Russian footballer struck by lightning, in intensive care (RT)

Ivan Zaborovsky, a goalkeeper for Znamya Truda in the third tier of Russian football, is understood to be receiving treatment after being struck by lightning during a training session, according to reports.

Details remain scant on the incident which is understood to have occurred on Saturday, with news of the potentially serious injuries suffered by the teenager filtering out via a Twitter account associated with the club.

“According to our information, today in training accident. In a young goalkeeper Ivan Zaborovsky was struck by lightning, now he is in intensive care. I hope that everything bad will pass it by,” the statement read, via translation. Read more
