Lagos confirms 2 dead in building collapse

Two persons have been confirmed dead when a building collapsed on them in the Ebute-Meta area of Lagos State.

The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, disclosed this in a statement on Friday.

PUNCH Online reports that at least three yet-to-be-identified persons, including a baby and two adults, were trapped in a collapsed building in the Ebute Meta area of Lagos State.

This is just as one person has been rescued from the debris of the collapsed one-story building with a penthouse.

The Director, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, earlier told our correspondent that the agency received a distressed call around 9 am on Friday about a building collapse in Herbert Macaulay Way, Ebute Meta.

When the fire service team arrived at the scene, one person was rescued, while three others were trapped under the debris.

In a follow-up update, the LASEMA boss confirmed that two persons died in the accident while one person was rescued.

“The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency has deployed its emergency response plan to the scene of a collapsed two-storey residential building with a penthouse. The cause of the collapse is still unknown. One adult male has been rescued, two recovered dead, while other occupants escaped when the building gave signs of collapsing,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated.
