Lagos CP condemns burning of Ikotun, Ojodu police stations (Vanguard)

The Commissioner of Police (CP), Lagos State, Hakeem Odumosu, on Thursday warned that the command will neutralise any move that will jeopardise security architecture and the maintenance of law and order in Lagos state.

Odumosu, in a statement signed by the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, condemned the continuous attacks on police stations, just as Ikotun Police Station and part of Ojodu station were burnt.

He appreciated the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Research and Planning, Leye Oyebade, for his sterling leadership qualities and efforts in making sure that normalcy is restored to Lagos. Read more

Lagos kicks as hoodlums loot CACOVID palliatives (Punch)

Suspected hoodlums on Thursday broke into a warehousing used for the storage of COVID-19 palliatives in Mazamaza community, in the Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State.

The group was said to have looted foodstuffs in the warehouse, located on Benster Crescent, aka Monkey Village.

Clips of the attack posted on Twitter revealed thousands of residents trooping into the warehouse to carry bags of rice, garri, beans, noodles, among others.

A military truck was also seen being loaded with the palliatives. Read more

#EndSARS: Police clear barricades in Lagos (Nation)

The police have commenced removal of road barricades across Lagos State as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in charge of Research and Planning Leye Oyebade inspected extent of damages from violent attacks.

Oyebade, who is in Lagos at the instance of the Inspector General of Police (IG) Mohammed Adamu, said obstructions on major roads were being removed to create access for motorists especially those on essential duties.

The DIG, who was led on the operational tour by the Lagos Police Commissioner (CP) Hakeem Odumosu, said the police were taking complete charge of security of lives and property in Lagos to prevent recurrence of violent attacks on the police, government and private individuals as seen in the last few days which left many lives lost and properties damaged. President Muhammadu Buhari has warned  those who hijacked and misdirected the  genuine and well-intended protest against the excesses of some members of the now disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).noting that he is pained that innocent lives have been lost.

Buhari  made this known during his Natoinwide broadcast on Thursday noting that “I acknowledged the genuine concerns and agitations of members of the public regarding the excessive use of force by some members of SARS.

“The choice to demonstrate peacefully is a fundamental right of citizens as enshrined in Section 40 of our Constitution and other enactments; … but this right to protest also imposes on the demonstrators the responsibility to respect the rights of other citizens, and the necessity to operate within the law. Lawlessness continues as hoodlums kill cops, burn more police stations, inmates attempt jailbreak (Punch)

The reign of terror by hoodlums across the country continued unabated on Thursday with reports of attacks on the police personnel, which resulted in some deaths, and burning of many police stations across the nation.

In some states, inmates of custodial centres were set free by the hoodlums, while in others, the inmates attempted to flee from custody, but their efforts were thwarted by security agents.

Many public buildings were also sent on fire by hoodlums across the country. Read more

I did not order Lekki shootings – Sanwo-Olu (Nation)

Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has maintained he didn’t order the shooting of #ENDSARS protesters on Tuesday evening by suspected security agents.

Sanwo-Olu, who spoke in an interview on Arise TV, said the State was already investigating whether the deceased was a protester.

Sanwo-Olu asked members of the public with credible information on anyone or group of persons killed in the incident to come forward with the claim.

He said the social media over blew the proportion of the incident with what he described as “false information” being shared by those who were not at the scene of the incident. Read more

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has condoled with victims of shootings which occurred in Lekki, Lagos.

The Vice President also expressed grief over loss lives in Lagos and other parts of the country as a result of the #ENDSARS protests.

#EndSARS protesters at Lekki Toll Gate were attacked with guns on Oct. 20.

Osinbajo, in a series of tweets, said he had reached out to those in hospital and prayed that such would not happen again. Read more

INEC postpones Lagos, Imo, Bayelsa, other bye-elections (Punch)

Following the ongoing #EndSARS nationwide protests, the Independent National Electoral has announced the indefinite postponement of the bye-elections in the six senatorial districts and nine state constituencies.

The commission said it would continue to monitor the situation and meet again in two weeks to decide on a feasible date for the elections.

The by-elections are to take place in Bayelsa Central Senatorial District, Bayelsa West Senatorial District, Nganzai and Bayo constituencies in Borno State, Cross River North Senatorial District and Obudu Constituency in Cross River. Read more

#EndSARS: Okowa imposes 48-hour curfew in Delta (Nation)

Delta Governor, Senator (Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa, has imposed a 48-hour curfew in the state following Wednesday night’s arson and destruction of government property in Asaba by some youths disguising as protesters.

He also announced the closure of public and private primary and secondary schools in the state until Nov. 2, 2020.

Okowa made these known in a statewide broadcast in Asaba on Thursday, and said that the curfew would commence at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

He said that the peaceful protests by #ENDSARS protesters had been hijacked by suspected criminals, and stated that the state government would not watch the elements to have a field day. Read more

Covid: US gives full approval for antiviral remdesivir drug (BBC)

US regulators have given full approval for the antiviral drug remdesivir to treat Covid-19 patients in hospitals.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said Veklury, the drug’s brand name, cut the recovery time on average by five days during clinical trials.

Plasma taken from the blood of recovered COVID-19 patients that is given to people sick with the disease does not reduce their chances of getting seriously ill or dying, according to new research from a study in India.

The research, which involved more than 400 people who were in hospital with COVID-19, investigated convalescent plasma as a treatment for people with moderate disease. The results, published in the medical journal BMJ on Friday, concluded that “convalescent plasma showed limited effectiveness”. Read more

Manchester United star Odion Ighalo has become one of the latest celebrities to voice their support for protests against police brutality in Nigeria.

In a video on Twitter, the Nigerian striker called his country’s government “a shame to the world”.

It comes amid reports that several people have been shot dead or wounded during demonstrations in Nigeria’s biggest city, Lagos.
