Lagos CP orders trial of officers seen assaulting suspect in viral video (Vanguard)

The Police Command in Lagos State says four of its officers are currently undergoing an orderly room trial for unprofessional conduct.

The Command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the trial in a statement on Wednesday.

Hundeyin said operatives of the command also arrested 27 civilians for allegedly assaulting police officers on lawful duty, including a traditional ruler. Read more 

Lagos Floods: Pupil swept away, 2-storey house collapses as many displaced (DailyTrust)

Floodwaters have swept away a pupil after two days of continued heavy downpour in many parts of Lagos State left many communities submerged.

The rain, which started on Tuesday, continued pouring till Wednesday, inundating the nooks and crannies of the state, impeding movement and leaving many residents stranded as they could not go out for work or business.

Daily Trust gathered that a primary six pupil simply identified as Joshua was swirled away by the flood in Ikosi, Ketu area of Lagos State. Read more 

Police arrest popular prankster, Zfancy (Punch)

A popular Nigerian prankster and social media influencer, Ubani Zion aka ZFancy, has been arrested by the operatives of the  Nigeria Police Force National Centre for Cyber Crimes.

The prankster, it was gathered, was arrested around 11 am on Wednesday in Abuja.

A top source at the centre told our correspondent that the prankster was arrested in connection with one of his pranks. Read more

Ogun Kidnapping: Police rescue 3 Indians, 1 Nigerian, eliminate two suspected kidnappers (Sun)

The Ogun State Police Command has said three Indians and a Nigerian who were kidnapped on June 30 at the Ilisan axis of the Sagamu-Ijebu Ode-Benin Expressway have been rescued.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Abiodun Alamutu, made the disclosure at a press briefing held at the Command’s Headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta,  the Ogun State capital.

Some foreign nationals were reported to have been abducted by gunmen at the Ilishan axis of the Sagamu-Ijebu-Ode- Benin Expressway on June 30. Read more 

RMAFC seeks EFCC help to recover unremitted revenues from MDAs (Vanguard)

The Chairman of Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) Mr. Muhammad Shehu has called for greater collaboration with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to plug revenue leakage in government agencies and recover unremitted revenues from Government agencies. 

 He made the call when he paid a courtesy visit to the Executive Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Ola Olukoyede in his office, today, in Abuja. 

Mr. Shehu said,” We are calling on EFCC for more collaboration, not only in the area of enforcement but also intelligence gathering and data sharing with respect to government revenue from any source. Read more

Troops foil terrorist attack on Kaduna village, neutralise 2 (Channels)

The Nigerian Army says its troops deployed for counter-terrorism operations in Kaduna State have foiled a terrorist attack on a village in the state, killing two of the terrorists.

A statement from the Department of Army Public Relations said troops, acting on intelligence, intercepted four armed terrorists on motorbikes at a known terrorists’ crossing point in Kurmin Aja, in the Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State, just moments before their planned strike.

The statement added that the troops, in a well-executed ambush, engaged the terrorists in an intense firefight and neutralised two of them, while others fled with gunshot wounds into a nearby forest. Read more

South East Reps Caucus backs out-of-court settlement for Kanu’s release (Nation)

The South East caucus of the House of Representatives has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to consider releasing the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and others in a similar situation as part of ways of resolving the security crisis in the South East. 

The 43 lawmaker sais they were in support of the out-of-court settlement being discussed between lawyers to the detained IPOB Leader and the representatives of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice at the resume hearing of the case against him.

Aggrieved youths set INEC office ablaze in Benue (DailyTrust)

Some aggrieved youths in Benue State burnt down the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Sankara, headquarters of Ukum Local Government Area, on Wednesday.

National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, confirmed this in a statement.

Olumekun quoted Prof. Sam Egwu, Resident Electoral Commissioner for Benue as saying the youths invaded the facility around 2pm. Read more

US President Joe Biden worked to calm senior Democrats and staff on his campaign on Wednesday, as reports suggested he was weighing his future after his disastrous debate with Donald Trump last week.

Mr Biden held a closed-door lunch with Vice-President Kamala Harris at the White House as speculation mounted over whether she would replace him as the party’s candidate in November’s election.

The pair then joined a call with the broader Democratic campaign where Mr Biden made clear he would remain in the race and Ms Harris reiterated her support. “I’m the nominee of the Democratic Party. No one’s pushing me out. I’m not leaving,” he told the call, a source told BBC News. Read more

A terminally-ill mum has admitted giving her dying son a large dose of morphine to ease his pain and ‘quietly end his life’.

Antonya Cooper’s son Hamish was just five when he was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma – a rare childhood cancer – and aged seven when he died at home on December 1, 1981.

Ms Cooper, a former chair of Neuroblastoma UK, who lives in Abingdon in Oxfordshire, said her young son had been ‘in a lot of pain’ by the end of his life. Read more

Hurricane Beryl batters south coast of Jamaica (AfricaNews)

Hurricane Beryl was roaring toward Jamaica on Wednesday, with islanders scrambling to make preparations after the powerful Category 4 storm earlier killed at least six people and caused significant damage in the southeast Caribbean.

In Kingston, people boarded up windows, fishermen pulled their boats out of the water and workers dismantled roadside advertising boards to protect them from the lashing winds.

Kingston resident Pauline Lynch said that she had stockpiled food and water in anticipation of the storm’s arrival. With wind already whipping a light rain, Lynch said, “I have no control over what is coming so I just have to pray that all people of Jamaica is safe and we don’t suffer no deaths, no loss.” Read more

Waitress pushed into Lake of the Ozarks by dine-and-dashers as she tried to serve bill (NBC)

Authorities are investigating a dine-and-dash attack during which a waitress was allegedly pushed into the Lake of the Ozarks by patrons who abandoned their bill. 

The female server at Fish & CO restaurant in Camdenton, Missouri, was “pulled into the lake” after a group she was serving left without paying their bar tab on Friday, the Camden County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. 

Surveillance footage obtained by NBC affiliate KY3 of Springfield, showed the group of patrons leaving the restaurant and walking down a dock to a boat. The server then ran after them to catch up to them. The camera doesn’t catch the alleged confrontation but a boat was seen leaving the dock soon after. Read more

Ariz. husband arrested after his wife disappears under mysterious circumstances (People)

The husband of a missing Arizona woman has been arrested as police investigate her disappearance as a possible homicide.

The Flagstaff Police Department announced in a press release on Tuesday, July 2, that officers arrested Daniel Paduchowski, 58, on a charge of aggravated assault as they continue to probe into his wife Kelly Paduchowski’s disappearance.

“This investigation is ongoing and the number one priority is to locate Kelly, however based on current evidence and information it is believed that Kelly may be the victim of a homicide,” police said in the statement. Read more

Putin and Xi hail ‘stability’ of China-Russia partnership on SCO sidelines (AlJazeera)

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping have hailed their country’s “partnership” on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (CSO), a regional security bloc founded by the duo as a counterpoint to Western might.

Speaking on the sidelines of the summit in Astana, Kazakhstan on Wednesday, both Putin and Xi commended the grouping’s expanding membership, which includes the Central Asian countries, as well as India, Iran and member-in-waiting Belarus. They also continued to portray the China-Russia relationship as a stabilising force in chaotic times.

Putin said the SCO was “strengthening its role as one of the key pillars of a fair multipolar world order”. However, he maintained that the “cooperation is not aimed against anyone, we are not creating any blocs or alliances, we are just acting in the interests of our peoples.” Read more
