Lagos CP probes teenager’s killing during protest (Nation)

Lagos State Police Commissioner, Edgal Imohimi, has ordered investigation into the alleged killing of a 16-year-old boy, Emmanuel Chukwu, by the police. Chukwu allegedly died from gunshot wounds on March 11 when policemen from Ijora -Badia Division were dispersing angry protesters who confronted the police for rescuing a suspected female kidnapper. The State Police Spokesman, Chike Oti, said the Command had ordered immediate investigation into the matter. Oti said: “On the 11th of March, 2018, a distress call was received that a suspected kidnapper was about being lynched by irate mob at Afolabi Street, Ijora-Badia. Read more

Adeboye visits Benue, says ‘I wept when I saw people weeping’ (Punch)

The General Overseer, Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, on Friday expressed displeasure with the mindless killings of people by Fulani herdsmen in Benue State and other parts of the country. Adeboye, alongside his wife, Folu, made his feelings known when he visited Benue to condole with Governor Samuel Ortom and pray for the government and people of the state over the killings by suspected herdsmen. The cleric called for a halt to the killings. Speaking to the gathering, Pastor Adeboye said he did not visit the state before the President did so that politicians would not read meaning into his action. Read more

Buhari’s govt’ll end Boko Haram, herdsmen activities –Kalu (SUN)

Former Abia State governor, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, has said Buhari’s  administration is doing a lot to see that activities of Boko Haram and herdsmen become history. Kalu stated this in his country home at Igbere, Abia state, after a meeting of All progressive Congress (APC) representatives. Kalu said (late former President Umaru Musa) Yar’Adua had wanted to address the issue of Boko Haram but could  not  and called on  President Muhammadu Buhari to give a realistic strategy on how the insurgency problem would be solved. He explained that when he was Abia governor, the state was not safe and that he brought a strategy, sat down with Abia people, the Nigeria Police, the community  and everybody and they fought and stopped armed robbers who terrorised the state. Soyinka gets pushback for call to declare Fulani herdsmen terrorists (SUN)

The All Progressives Congress (APC) National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, has disagreed with Nobel Laurette, Professor Wole Soyinka, on his call for the Federal Government to declare Fulani herdsmen terrorists. Reacting to Soyinka urging the Federal Government to declare as terrorists herdsmen responsible for attacks in states across the country, Bolaji argued that it would be an error to tag a people like the Fulani terrorists because of the actions of a few atrocious elements. “I understand the sentiment behind his suggestions,” he told Daily Sun by telephone Thursday, adding: “but we need to be very careful not to criminalize an entire people just because of the criminal activities of a few.” Read more

Buhari orders MDAs to defend their budgets before National Assembly (Punch)

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha, on Thursday said President Muhammadu Buhari has directed all ministers and parastatals to appear before the National Assembly to defend their budgets. Mustapha disclosed this in an interview with State House correspondents at the end of a meeting Buhari had with leaders of the National Assembly at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. He said, “The President gave them (the lawmakers) update on security, economy, job creation, processes in the National Assembly especially with regards to the budget and the need to conclude on it. Court dismisses Melaye’s appeal against recall (Nation)

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has dismissed an appeal by Senator Dino Melaye against a judgment of the Federal High Court, confirming the power of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to commence a recall process without first referring to him. In a judgment on Friday, a three-man panel of the Appeal Court held that the Federal High Court lacked the jurisdiction to have heard Melaye’s suit querying the recall process by INEC. Shortly after INEC released its order of procedure for Melaye’s recall process late last year, Justice John Tsoho of the Federal High Court (FHC) granted an ex-parte order in favour of Melaye stopping INEC from carrying through the process. President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday in Kano, attended the grand wedding Fatiha of Alhaji Aliko Dangote’s daughter, Hajiya Fatima and her groom, Jamilu Abubakar. The wedding Fatiha between Fatima and Jamilu, son of a former Inspector-General of police, Muhammad Abubakar, took place at 12 noon at the Kano Emir’s palace.The News men reports that the wedding was conducted by the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II and supported by the Chief Imam of Kano, Prof. Sani Zaharaddeen. Gambia will collapse without Nigerian professionals – VP (Punch)

The Vice-President of the Gambia, Mrs Fatoumata Tambajang, has said that The Gambia would ‘collapse’ if Nigerian professionals in the country withdraw their services or leave the country. Tambajang made the remark at a dinner organised for the Nigerian delegation to the 62nd Commission on the Status of Women at the Nigeria House, New York, on Thursday night. Headteacher allegedly misappropriates N1.8m school fees (Punch)

A 37-year-old Headteacher, Idowu Oniyide, was on Friday arraigned in a Kubwa Grade 1 Area Court over alleged misappropriation of N1.8 million school fees. ‎ The accused, who lives in Coke Street, Byazhin Across, Kubwa, Abuja was docked on charges relating to criminal breach of trust, cheating and criminal misappropriation. The prosecutor, Babajide Olanipekun, told the court that one Dickson Itodo of Gwarinpa, Abuja reported the matter at the Kubwa Police Station on March 8. Read more

Alleged scam: EFCC withdraws charges against ex-Oyo HoS, 11 others (Nation)

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Friday withdrew the charges against ex- Head of Service in Oyo State, Alhaja Kudirat Adeleke, and 11 other persons arraigned for alleged N5.6 billion pension scam. The Commission announced its intention of discontinuance with the suit before Justice Laniran Akintola of the State High Court in Ibadan.Others linked with the alleged scam are – Muili Aderemi, Iyabo Giwa, Adesina Ayoade, Oguntayo Banji, Adebiyi Musenbiq, Muili Adedamola, Adeduntan Johnson, Bosede Johnson, Kareem Rasheed, Olujimi Adebayo and Adewale Kehinde. Anxiety as Argungu River dries up (SUN)

Residents of Argungu, in Argungu Local Government Area of Kebbi State currently living in a palpable fear over the sudden dry-up of famous Argungu river. The Daily Sun gathered that people of the ancient town woke up few days ago to discovered that  the river, popularly known as ‘Mayan Fada River”, had dried up while special species of fish injected into it by the state government and its natural species had all gone. Plateau killings: Soldiers recover 23 corpses, arrest 7 suspects (SUN)

Director Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Texas Chukwu, has confirmed that 23 corpses were recovered at Mararaba Dare village during a search by troops of the 3rd Division Garrison, Jos, Plateau State, after a clash by Irigwe people in Miango Community and Fulani herdsmen in Bassa local government area.Two soldiers died in the line of duty, while 7 suspects were arrested, with several weapons recovered. General Texas in a press release issued in Jos said the corpses were recovered in the bush after herdsmen clashed on Wednesday 14 March, 2018 at Rafiki village in Bassa local government area. Borussia Dortmund Peter Stoger said he and his staff “were not all happy” with Mario Gotze after their elimination from the Europa League at Salzburg on Thursday. Teacher posts salary on Facebook, says it’s too little despite varsity degree (Punch)

Fed up with low pay and nearly meaningless salary issues, an Arizona teacher posted her salary to Facebook alongside an exasperated message. Whispering Wind Academy teacher Elisabeth Milich said her pay was not a living wage. A picture of paperwork, apparently revealing her pay of $35,490 per year, showed her getting an additional $131 in pay the next year after taking developmental classes, reports say. Read more

UN staff in Geneva have overwhelmingly voted to strike on Friday over “unfair” pay cuts, in a move sure to disrupt a wide range of activities at the world body’s European headquarters. Staff unions said a full 1,040 staff members, or 89.4 percent of those who cast a ballot on Thursday, voted in favour of the full-day strike. “The results, which are overwhelmingly positive, show the extent to which UN staff have lost trust in the way in which their conditions of service, whether in Geneva or in the deep field, have been set by their employer,” Ian Richards, who heads the UN staff unions association in Geneva, told AFP. EU releases list of US products that could face duties (Washingtonpost)

The European Union on Friday published a list of U.S. products it plans to introduce duties on if the 28-nation bloc is not exempted from President Donald Trump’s steel and aluminum tariffs. The list contains dozens of products including breakfast foods, kitchenware, clothing and footwear, washing machines, textiles, whiskey, motorcycles, boats and batteries. They are worth around 2.8 billion euros ($3.4 billion) in trade annually, but the list could grow to the equivalent of 6.4 billion euros once the full extent of the impact of U.S. tariffs is known.
