Driver who killed tricycle rider in Lagos nabbed (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested the driver, who allegedly killed a tricycle rider, Bassey Aniete, in the Shitta area of Surulere on Sunday

PUNCH Metro had reported that the driver, who was identified by the police as Christian Innocent, accused the 26-year-old Aniete of bashing his car, which led to an argument between them.

It was gathered that Innocent brought out a wheel spanner from his vehicle and allegedly hit Aniete repeatedly on the forehead with it. Read more

 

Police arrest woman assaulting kid in viral video (Nation)

A 24-year-old woman Onyinye Mbadike caught on camera dehumanising a young boy has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command.

Mbadike was seen in a viral video on social media beating up a young boy said to be an orphan after which she locked him inside a dog’s kennel.

According to a statement by spokesman Bala Elkana, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), the incident occurred at 7 Trimnell Street, Aguda in Surulere. Read more

 

Bank robbery, car-snatching kingpins arrested, firearms recovered (Punch)

Personnel of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested a suspected bank robbery and a car-snatching kingpins, and recovered some firearms from them.

The suspected car-snatching kingpin, Francis Abubakar, was arrested by the anti-crime patrol team of the Satellite Police Station, while he and his gang members attempted to snatch a Peugeot 307 car at the Mosalasi, Mile 2 area of the state.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, said in a statement on Sunday that a locally-made shotgun was recovered from Abubakar and that the suspect had been handed over to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad for further investigation. Read more

 

Court remands man charged with raping 11-year-old girl (Nation)

An Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Wednesday remanded in prison custody a man, David Okotie, who allegedly raped an eleven-year-old girl.

Chief Magistrate Olufunke Sule-Amzat made the order following an application by the police.

Sule-Amzat, who did not take Okotie’s plea, remanded Okotie in Kirikiri Prison and ordered the police to send the case file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice. Read more

 

Bus conductor punches police constable over obstruction (Punch)

The police, on Wednesday, arraigned a bus conductor, Quadri Mustapha, before the Lagos State Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ikeja for allegedly punching a police constable, Olumide Sonoiki, in the mouth.

It was gathered that Mustapha punched the constable, who challenged him for causing obstruction on the road.

According to the police prosecutor, Ishola Samuel, Mustapha committed the offence around 4pm on July 17, 2019, at the Oshodi bus stop. Read more

 

Court remands woman for ‘hitting daughter with hammer’ (Nation)

An Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday ordered that a 32-year-old woman, who allegedly hit her 11-year-old daughter with a hammer on the forehead, should be remanded in prison custody pending legal advice.

Chinonso Michael, a resident of Iwaya, Yaba, Lagos, pleaded guilty to beating her daughter with a wooden turning stick.

Chief Magistrate Olufunke Sule- Amzat, who did not take the defendant’s plea, ordered that she should be remanded in Kirikiri Prisons. Read more

 

Man charged to court for allegedly ‘spreading rumours’ (Punch)

A 35-year-old man, Daniel, accused of spreading “rumours” about his neighbours, on Wednesday appeared in an Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court.

Police charged Daniel with spreading rumours likely to cause a breach of the peace.

Businessman charged with defrauding Chinese (Nation)

A businessman, Chibuike Amadi, on Wednesday appeared at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly collecting handbags worth N2.16 million from a Chinese, under the false pretence that he would pay her after sales.

Amadi, 28, who lives at 11, Akiosun Street, Ijesha, Lagos, is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and obtaining money under false pretence.

Trader allegedly absconds with clients’ $2,900 (Nation)

A foreign exchange (forex) trader, Olufemi Oluwade, who allegedly absconded with two of his clients’ $2,900 dollars (about N1.1million), was on Wednesday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

Oluwade, 39, of 5, Oyawale Street, Idimu, Lagos, was arraigned by the police before Mr. A. I. Abina on a two-count charge of stealing and obtaining money under false pretence.

Prosecuting Sergeant Ishola Samuel alleged that Oluwade committed the offence in May on Obafemi Awolowo Way, Ikeja. Read more

 

Operator gets four years for car theft (Nation)

An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos has sentenced a 23-year-old car wash operator, Adeyemi Adetula, to four years imprisonment for stealing a car valued at N3million.

Mrs. B. O. Osunsanmi pronounced the verdict after the defendant pleaded guilty to the two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

Osunsanmi, who did not give Adetula an option of fine, sentenced him to a term of one year with hard labour on the first count of conspiracy and three years for stealing, but ordered that the sentences should run concurrently. Read more

 

Mum charged with pouring hot water on daughter changes plea (Nation)

A 33-year-old businesswoman, Angela David, who pleaded guilty to pouring hot water on her 13-year-old daughter, has changed her plea to not guilty.

Angela on August 1 pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous injuries on her daughter before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court and was remanded at Kirikiri Prisons, pending sentencing.

At the resumed hearing last Friday, Magistrate B. O. Osunsanmi was about to sentence Angela, when she changed her plea to not guilty, saying she did not understand the charge when she took the guilty plea. Read more
