Fish farmer’s trial for ‘chopping off boy’s hand’ stalled (Nation)
An Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday adjourned till October 2, the trial of a 67-year-old fish farmer, Jeremiah Obrifor, who allegedly chopped off the right hand of an 11-year-old boy, Goodluck Amaechi.
The court fixed the date following the absence of Chief Magistrate A. O. Adedayo, who is on annual leave.
The Nation learnt that Obrifor and Amaechi’s family are exploring an out of court settlement. Read more
Tenant kills Lagos landlord, dumps corpse in septic tank (Punch)
A tenant, Daniel Isaac, has been arrested by personnel of the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly killing his landlord, Willy Ebinate, at his house on Owodun Street in the Ikotun area of the state.
Isaac was alleged to have killed the 50-year-old car dealer in order to steal his Toyota Camry car that was parked inside the compound.
After perpetrating the crime, the 38-year-old tenant reportedly dumped Ebinate’s corpse in a septic tank and drove away the car. Read more
Teenager arraigned for alleged cultism (Nation)
A teenager, Shakiru Odebiyi, allegedly caught belonging to a secret society, was on Wednesday brought before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court.
The defendant, 19, an aluminium roofer, of no fixed address, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and belonging to an unlawful society.
Prosecuting Inspector Donjour Perezi told the court that the defendant committed the offences on July 16 at 4pm, at Agbotikuyo Street, Agege, Lagos. Read more
Businessman abuses two boys (Nation)
The police have arrested a businessman, Friday Okeke, for allegedly defiling two underage boys on Lagos Island.
The command’s spokesman Bala Elkana, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSO), in a statement Tuesday, said the suspect was arrested following complaints at Ebute Ero Police Station.
“On July 27, at 11:30am, Ebute Ero Police Station received a complaint from two parents against Okeke, 35, of 23, Kose Street, Lagos Island. Read more
Agent lures maid to steal employer’s jewellery in Lagos (Punch)
An agent, Francis Okputu, has been arrested by the operatives of the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad for allegedly luring a domestic help to steal her employer’s jewellery.
It was gathered that the 37-year-old Okputu specialised in bringing job seekers from his hometown to work as housemaids in Lagos.
In his confessional statement to the police, Okputu admitted to helping Lagos residents get housemaids as an agent and by linking up not less than 15 domestic help every year with prospective employers. Read more
DJ accused of stealing N615,000 goods (Nation)
A 39-year-old disc jockey (DJ), Anthony Eze, on Tuesday appeared before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing goods worth N615,000.
He pleaded not guilty
Prosecuting Inspector Donjour Perezi said the defendant committed the offence between December 2018 and April at 90, Victoria Street, Ojota. Read more
Man charged with issuing dud cheque (Nation)
A 45-year-old man, Olufemi Godwin, has been arraigned at a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for alleged issuance of a dud cheque for N1.5 million.
Godwin, whose address was not given, was arraigned on Wednesday on one- count charge, but he denied committing the offence.
Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Clement Okuoimose said Godwin committed the offence on July 14, at 11am, at Mr. Right Hotel on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway. Read more
Man ‘obtains N1.35m under false pretence’ (Nation)
A 44-year-old man, Fayemi Shadrack, on Monday appeared at an Ikorodu Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly obtaining N1.35 million under false pretence.
He pleaded not guilty to the three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and obtaining money under false pretence.
Prosecuting Sergeant John Iberedem said the defendant committed the offence last December at 6, Ademibuyon Street, Agbede Ebuwawa, Owutu, Ikorodu. Read more
Security guard arraigned for stealing N2,385 church offering (Punch)
The police on Monday arraigned a security guard, Michael Nwaogwu, before the Lagos State Magistrates’ Court sitting in Yaba for allegedly stealing from the offering box of a church.
It was gathered that on July 17, 2019, Nwaogwu allegedly stole N2,385 from the offering box of the St. Dennis Catholic Church in the Akoka, Bariga area of the state.
According to the prosecutor, Godwin Oriabure, another guard, Musa Ayay, who discovered that the offering box had been tampered with, confronted Nwaogwu, who confessed to the crime and upon a search, the money was allegedly found in his underwear. Read more
Suspected transformer vandals face N10.5m theft charge (Nation)
Two men, Noah Aka and Abdulahi Haruna, were on Tuesday brought before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court for allegedly damaging a 500KVA transformer and stealing electric wires worth N10.5 million.
Aka, 26, pleaded not guilty to the four-count charge of wilful damage, stealing and receiving stolen property before Magistrate A. O. Alogba.
Prosecuting Inspector Ingobo Emby alleged that the defendants committed the offences between July 15 and July 27, at Iroko-Awe, Ilasan New Road, Lekki, Lagos. Read more
Two charged with diesel oil theft (Nation)
Two men were on Monday arraigned at a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing 75 litres of diesel engine oil valued at N46,500.
Usman Nuhu, 32, a guard, and Celestine Klotoe, 37, a driver, pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.
Prosecuting Sergeant Modupe Olaluwoye said the defendants committed the offences, on July 18, at 51B, Adekunle Bisi Street, GRA, Ogudu, Lagos. Read more
