School gardener arrested for beating WASSCE candidate to death (Punch)

A school gardener, Femi Aderonmu, has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly beating a Senior Secondary School 3 pupil of the Jubril Martins Memorial Grammar School, Iponri, Rafiu Adagun, to death.

It was gathered that Rafiu was heading home after writing his West African Senior School Certificate Examination on Wednesday when he was accosted by the gardener along the Oke-Olu Road in the Iponri area of the state.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Aderonmu engaged the deceased in a fight, which led to the latter being unconscious. He was later rushed to hospital where he was confirmed dead. Read more

Rape suspect remanded (Nation)

A 45-year-old gardener, Phillip Ononaku, who allegedly defiled a 13-year-old girl, was on Tuesday remanded at the Kirikiri Prisons by an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

Magistrate Mrs. E. Kubeinje, however, refused to take the defendant’s plea when the charge was read to him.

She ordered that the defendant be kept behind bars pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). Read more

Man gets N50,000 bail for allegedly stealing wallet containing N8,000 (Punch)

A man, Kundos, 28, who allegedly stole a wallet containing N8,000, was on Wednesday granted bail in the sum of N50,000 by a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Aka Basorun, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Basorun adjourned the case until June 11 for further hearing. Read more

Bus driver jailed three years for stealing (Nation)

An Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Wednesday sentenced a commercial bus driver, Simon Monday, to three years imprisonment for stealing a bus valued at N750,000.

Magistrate K.K Awoyinka, convicted Monday, 23, following his plea of guilty to a one-count charge of stealing, under Sections 287 (10) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Before handing down the verdict, Mrs Awoyinka asked the convict if he had anything to say. Read more

How cook killed my husband – Credit Switch boss’ widow (Punch)

The wife of the late Chairman of Credit Switch Technology, Chief Ope Bademosi, who was murdered at his Parkview Estate residence in the Ikoyi area of Lagos State, on Tuesday narrated to a Lagos State High Court in Igbosere how her husband was allegedly murdered by their 22-year-old Togolese cook, Sunday Anani.

The widow, Ebunoluwa , told the court that she had gone to Polaris Bank at the Falomo area to transfer money to Dubai and China when the deceased angrily called her, asking why the defendant was knocking at his room’s door.

She added that by the time she came back, she saw blood flowing from her husband’s room. Read more

Suspected fraudster arraigned (Nation)

A 36-year-old man, Ayo Adeleke, on Tuesday appeared at an Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly defrauding an Uber driver of N47, 000.

Adeleke, whose address was not provided, is charged with fraud, obtaining under false pretences and theft.

Prosecuting counsel Maria Dauda alleged that the defendant committed the offence last November 19 at 8:40am, on Funsho Williams/Marina Way, Lagos. Read more

Court sentences Cameroonian home help to death for killing boss (Punch)

The Lagos State High Court in Igbosere has sentenced a Cameroonian home help, Leudjoe Koyemen Joel, to death for murdering her Nigerian employer, Mrs Dayo Adeleke.

In a judgment delivered on Tuesday, two years and five months after the incident, Justice Adedayo Akintoye convicted Joel and ordered that he be hanged to death.

The judge held that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt a count of murder pressed by the state against the Cameroonian. Read more

Two traffic robbers nabbed in Lagos (Punch)

Personnel of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested a suspected traffic robber, Adigun Ganiyu, for allegedly dispossessing residents of their valuables around the Cassidy bus stop in the Okokomaiko area of the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Bala Elkana, said in a statement on Sunday that policemen on surveillance patrol arrested Ganiyu after a gun battle with his gang members.

Elkana stated, “On Friday, May 17, 2019, around 10.20pm, a team of policemen from the Okokomaiko Police Station on surveillance patrol intercepted a gang of traffic robbery suspects at the Cassidy bus stop, Okokomaiko. The hoodlums engaged the police in a gun battle but eventually succumbed to the superior firepower of the police. One of the hoodlums was fatally injured and one Adigun Ganiyu, 26, was arrested, while the other gang members escaped. Read more

An Igbosere Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday sentenced a commercial bus driver, Simon Monday, to three years imprisonment for stealing a bus valued at N750,000.

Scavengers jailed for stealing aluminium frames (Punch)

Two scavengers, Aminu Lawal and Shaibu Sulaimon, have been convicted and jailed for six months each by the Ijede Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for stealing aluminium frames valued at N140,000 at Osota along the Ijede Road.

The convicts, who hail from Katsina State, were said to have come to Lagos to scavenge for scrap metals.

It was learnt that in the process of scavenging for scrap metals, the convicts jumped into an uncompleted building and removed all the aluminium window frames that had been fixed. Read more

Cart pusher charged with assault (Nation)

A cart pusher, Mr. Sulaimon Adamu, was on Wednesday arraigned at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly assaulting a man.

He pleaded not guilty to the assault charge.

Fashion designer allegedly defrauds fabrics seller (Punch)

A fashion designer, Eniola Ibikunle, 61, on Monday, appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly obtaining fabrics worth N209,000 without payment.

Ibikunle, a resident of Akute, Ojodu in Lagos, was arraigned on two counts of false pretences and stealing, but she pleaded not guilty to the charge.

According to the police prosecutor, Insp. Matthew Akhaloude, the defendant collected fabrics worth N209,000, from one Mrs Pauline Okonkwo, with a promise to pay for them the following month, but failed. Read more

Two women face kidnap charge (Nation)

The police on Tuesday arraigned Mercy Sampson and Stella Madueke at an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly kidnapping a three-year-old girl from a church.

Sampson, 53, and Madueke, are charged with conspiracy, forgery, false pretence, kidnapping and stealing.

Prosecuting Inspector Chinalu Uwadione said the defendants committed the offence last month at Igando, a Lagos suburb. Read more
