Lagos dispatch rider dies after ramming into bus (Punch)

A dispatch rider with a delivery company, Q-Link Delivery Services, has been killed after colliding with a commercial bus on the Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the yet-to-be-identified rider was conveying deliveries to a destination on Tuesday around 11am when he suddenly lost control of the motorcycle and rammed into the commercial bus which was filled with passengers.

A passerby, who gave his name only as Adetokunbo, said the motorcycle immediately caught fire, adding that the dispatch rider was burnt to death.

He said, “A Q-Link dispatch rider was on his way to deliver something but lost control of the motorcycle and rammed into an 18-seater commercial bus on the Third Mainland Bridge. It went up in flames and the man was burnt beyond recognition. Read more

Assembly approves Sanwo-Olu’s request to amend 2021 budget (Guardian)

Lagos State House of Assembly, yesterday, approved the request of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to revise the 2021 Appropriation Law.

Chairman of the House Committee on Budget and Economic Planning, Gbolahan Yishawu, who read the various sectoral allocations on the floor during plenary, announced the new appropriation law as N1.25 trillion.

According to Yishawu, N513.3 billion was approved for recurrent expenditure from the Consolidated Revenue Fund, while N743.2 billion from the Development Fund was approved for capital expenditure, both for the year ended December 31, 2021.

Speaker of the Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, subsequently read out the recommendations of the committee on the floor of the House and was approved through voice-votes by the lawmakers. Read more

Ex Big Brother Naijahousemate, Tega Dominic, has publicly cried out about being bullied.

Tega took to her Twitter handle to vent against the treatment she has been getting online since she left the Big Brother house.

The former housemate, who said despite not being perfect, she did not expect some of the things she is getting.

She added that she was mentally exhausted with online bullying.

NCC disqualifies Nigerians below 18 years from getting SIM (Punch)

The Nigerian Communications Commission has disqualified anyone below the age of 18 from registering and owning a Subscriber Identity Module in Nigeria.

This is according to the draft copy of the modified Registration of Telephone Subscribers Regulations published on the commission’s website.

In the modified regulations, NCC limited telecoms subscribers to only include anyone above the age of 18.

“‘Subscriber’ means a person not below the age of 18 years who subscribes to communications services by purchasing a subscription medium or entering into a subscription contract with a licensee.” Read more

Nigeria not among nations on UK government’s COVID-19 red list, FG clarifies (Guardian)

The Federal Government has said Nigeria is not among red-listed countries, whose citizens require mandatory quarantine for 14 days in a supervised UK facility.

The UK government had in a statement on Monday said Nigerians would continue to isolate upon arrival to that country.

Speaking during a COVID-19 vaccination update in Abuja, Executive Director of National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr Faisal Shuaib, said Nigeria’s status has not changed. “This is similar to our requirement to have travellers from the UK isolate for seven days upon arrival in Nigeria,” he said.

Shuaib noted that the Presidential Steering Committee on COVID-19 (PSC) is in the process of reviewing requirements and is in touch with the UK government. Read more

Nigeria records 6,746 COVID-19 vaccine side effects cases (Punch)

The Executive Director of the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Faisal Shuaib, on Tuesday said 191 serious and 6,555 non-serious adverse effects have so far been recorded in Nigeria since the commencement of COVID-19 vaccination, making a total of 6,746 cases.

Shuaib disclosed this at a briefing in Abuja on Tuesday.

He, however, added that all affected persons were managed in public facilities and have fully recovered.

He said, “In this phase of the vaccination process, 191 serious and 6,555 non-serious AEFI cases were reported. Read more

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said the November 6 governorship election in Anambra State will go on as planned.

There have been fears that the activities of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the state may hinder the conduct of the election.

Daily Trust had reported how politicians went into hiding and suspended campaigns as a result of the chaos in the state.

Amid the uncertainty over the election, Director, Voter Education and Publicity, INEC, Victor Ayodele Aluko, told Daily Trust on Monday that the emergency Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security meeting would among others deliberate on the way forward for the Anambra election. Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has rewarded the best teachers in the state with cash prizes, ranging from N1 million to N2 million.

A rare collection of drawings, sketches and paintings by champion boxer Muhammad Ali has sold at auction for nearly $1m (£733,760).

Some 26 art works went under the hammer at Bonhams auction house in New York.

One of the most anticipated works, Sting Like a Bee, sold for $425,000 (£311,853), more than 10 times its pre-sale estimate.

Ali is hailed as one of the greatest ever athletes, activist and poet, but his artistic talents are less known. Read more

Fans of the new Netflix smash hit series Squid Game fought in the street as they queued to get inside an exclusive pop-up store in Paris.

Tempers boiled over as people queued for hours to get a chance to play some of the games featured in the series.

The store was only open for two days from October 3 and proved an instant hit with fans of the Korean-language show which is taking the world by storm.

Chappelle says DaBaby canceled for offending gays — but not killing man (NYPost)

Dave Chappelle’s new comedy special, The Closer, has only just dropped on Netflix, but it’s already making headlines due to a controversial joke made at the expense of rapper DaBaby.

Chappelle, who is well-known for his withering jokes about race and sexuality, quips that killing a black man in the United States is less offensive than upsetting members of the LGBTQ community — and he cites DaBaby’s career downfall as proof.

Back in 2018, DaBaby admitted to fatally shooting a 19-year-old man inside a North Carolina Walmart, claiming he acted in self-defense. Prosecutors soon dropped the case against him before he went on to release two critically acclaimed, chart-topping albums.

However, DaBaby’s career came crashing down in July of this year, when he made a series of homophobic remarks at a concert in Miami. Music festival organizers dropped him from a series of star-studded shows, which prompted him to complain that he had been “canceled.” Read more

Russian film team boldly shoot towards space station (BBC)

Russia has taken the lead in a space race with a difference, sending a team to the International Space Station to shoot a feature film ahead of an American crew.

Yulia Peresild, 37, is set to star in the film, directed by Klim Shipenko.

Their Soyuz MS-19 spacecraft took off from Baikonur in Kazakhstan, and three hours later docked with the International Space Station.

US actor Tom Cruise and Nasa have also been planning to make a film there. Read more

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr is owed eight months salaries by the Nigeria Football Federation, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The Franco-German, who helped qualify the Eagles for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations, was last paid in February by his employers.

Rohr, who is reportedly paid $45,000 as monthly salary, pays the team’s video analyst, chief scout as well as the fitness and goalkeeper trainers from his wages, it was learnt.

Football Australia to investigate abuse allegations by Matildas players (BBC)

Former Australian women’s football players have alleged a culture of sexual harassment within the sport.

Ex-Matildas striker Lisa de Vanna, 36, told a newspaper she had been subjected to predatory behaviour and propositions from teammates when she was a teenager.

Football Australia said it was not previously aware of the allegations.

But the governing body said it would set up an independent investigation into any formal complaints by Ms De Vanna and other players. Read more
