Death toll rises to 24 in Abia pipeline explosion (Nation)

The death toll from Friday’s oil pipeline explosion in two Abia communities in Osisioma Local Government Area of the state has risen to 24, Commissioner of Police Anthony Ogbizi, has said. The state Commander of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps Benito Eze confirmed to newsmen on Friday that 19 persons, including a nursing mother, died on the spot. Briefing newsmen in Umuahia yesterday after visiting the scene of the explosion, Ogbizi said that the number of deaths had risen to 24. Read more

Deadly blast hits female candidate’s rally in Afghanistan (Independent)

A bombing attack hit an electoral rally in Afghanistan as a female candidate was about to give a speech. The Taliban had decried the upcoming parliamentary vote and several politicians have recently been killed. At least 14 people were killed over 30 wounded when a motorcycle laden with explosives blew up during a campaign rally in Rustaq, north Afghanistan, on Saturday. “There are a number of wounded people in critical condition,” police spokesman Khalil Aser said. Classmates save 14-year-old Nigerian and family from being deported from Ireland (Guardian)

In what can only be described as a commendable act, the classmates of a 14-year-old Nigerian boy identified as Nonso Muojeke have saved the teenager and his family from being deported from Ireland. It is learnt that he alongside his mother and older brother have lived in Ireland since he was two after his father died in 2007. His mother relocated to Ireland to escape ill-treatment but her application for an asylum had been declined and the family was served a deportation order. Read more
