The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of four suspects for allegedly attempting to kidnap a 10-year-old girl in the state.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the development in a tweet, said the suspects were rescued from being lynched by an angry mob, who caught them perpetrating the crime.

He said, “These four elderly people allegedly attempted to kidnap a 10-year-old girl. People around apprehended them and beat them black and blue. The police arrived on time. Investigation is ongoing. Stop jungle justice! Report crime and criminals to the police.”

In another development, the PPRO said two persons were rescued from being lynched by an angry mob who descended on them for allegedly possessing the corpse of a child in the Oshodi area of Lagos State. Read more 

Lagos residents raise health concerns  over deplorable state of Oko-Oba abattoir (Guardian)

Lagos residents have expressed concerns over the deplorable state of Oko-Oba abattoir located in Agege Local Council of the state.

The concerns, they said, stemmed from the fact that in about 8,000 cattle consumed on a daily basis in Lagos, about 30 per cent of them  are slaughtered at the Oko Oba Agege abattoir, whose environment is deplorable, thereby putting consumer’s health at a high risk. 

The slaughter slab, which sits on a large expanse of elevated cemented floor, is also  in a mess with blood and piles of animal dung,  some of which found their way into the adjoining gutters. 

A resident, Tunde Kosoko, said the sight of faeces littering the abattoir, indiscriminate waste disposal, unethical meat slaughtering processes and sales pose grave concerns to the citizens.  Read more 

Widow accuses Lagos police of N600k extortion, petitions IGP (Punch)

A 45-year-old widow, Olabisi Ayinla, has accused men of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba, Lagos State, of extorting N610,000 from her.

PUNCH Metro gathered that on August 27, Ayinla hired a truck to convey 15,000 litres of diesel, worth over N10m, to one of her customers at Idera Bus Stop, Owode Onirin in the Ikorodu area of the state.

However, the truck was allegedly hijacked by some armed men in military uniform at Anthony Bus Stop, along the Lagos-Ikorodu Expressway.

The widow, who supplies diesel and petrol products, told our correspondent on Thursday that the case was immediately reported at the Anthony Police Station, but was transferred to the SCID. Read more 

No going back on community policing – IGP (DailyTrust)

The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, on Thursday, said the force would not discard community policing system arrangements already put in place to checkmate various crimes at local levels.

Baba also disclosed that the force had upgraded its Police Training curriculum to cater for knowledge that will be practically used in carrying out responsibilities in line with the principle of Community-oriented policing.

The police chief stated this at the 11th edition of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) forum in Abuja.

“Over the years, crimes and criminality have adopted a fluid nature. There was a time when society and members of the community, on their own volition, would arrest criminals in their locales and hand them over to the Police for onward prosecution and sanctions.” Read more 

Expert thumbs down FRSC on road traffic crashes eradication (Vanguard)

A former Assistant Corps Marshal, ACM of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Commander Ayobami Omiyale, has thumbed down the FRSC for its open-ended vision statement of eradicating Road Traffic Crashes, RTC on all roads.

The Road Safety expert made this observation while delivering a paper titled: Promotion of Strategic partnership for innovative road safety intervention in Lagos and Ogun states, at the third quarter retreat of the FRSC RS2, in Lagos.

Presenting statistics that showed an exponential increase in the number of RTC in the country between 2020 and 2021, Omiyale stated that “it can be gleaned from the foregoing tables that contrary to the vision statement of FRSC, which is to eradicate road traffic crashes on all roads, the crashes are actually escalating exponentially by 25% in the zone and 9% in the whole country between year 2020 and 2021. Businesswoman and talent manager, Bose Ogulu has commended her son, Burna Boy’s “Last Last” and “It’s Plenty.”

Mama Burna, the founder & CEO of Spaceship Collective, who manages her son’s musical career declared ‘Last Last’ as a hit but noted ‘Trabaye’ referring to ‘It’s Plenty’ is an anthem.

She made this commendation of the two songs off Odogwu’s sixth studio album “Love, Damini” in a viral video while speaking to some of the singer’s crew.

“Last Last” is a hit but “Trabaye” is an anthem,” Mama Burna said.

 “Last Last”, top charting song which has been certified gold in four countries, is acclaimed to be the song with the most earnings for Burna was released through Atlantic Records on 13 May 2022 as the first single from his sixth studio album “Love, Damini”.

Ebonyi records 8 cases of rabies in 9 months (Guardian)

A total of eight cases of rabies were recorded in Ebonyi between January and September, the Commissioner for Health in the state, Dr Daniel Umezurike said on Wednesday.

Umezurike gave the figure during Ebonyi Dog-Mediated Human Rabies Control Programme, an event to mark this year’s World Rabies Day.

The 2022 edition of the event, has the theme “Rabies: One Health, Zero Deaths.”

It was organised by the state Ministry of Agricultural and Natural Resources in collaboration with the Ministries of Health and Environment as well as Grant and Donor Agencies.

Umezurike stated that five human contacts were line listed, vaccinated and currently under surveillance. Read more

The absence of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), at the peace pact of Thursday has stirred reactions.

Although he was represented by his running mate, Kashim Shettima, his absence sparked outrage, especially in the Nigerian digital sphere.

Nigerian human rights activist, Aisha Yesufu, via her Twitter handle, stated that the APC presidential candidate ought to sign the peace pact himself.

Trevor Noah to step down as host of The Daily Show (BBC)

Comedian Trevor Noah has announced he is standing down as host of The Daily Show.

Noah said he was “filled with gratitude for the journey” but that there was “another part of my life that I want to carry on exploring”.

The 38-year-old has hosted the satirical news and talk show since taking over from Jon Stewart in 2015.

He said the timing of his departure would be announced later and that he would continue as host in the meantime.

Noah began his career in his native South Africa, releasing a string of stand-up specials and hosting a late-night talk show before relocating to the US in 2011. Read more

After anti-China campaign, Kenya’s Ruto does about-face (VOA)

Kenya’s newly elected President William Ruto, who talked tough on China while campaigning, has reversed his stance on Beijing since taking office.

“We cherish the robust friendship that Kenya enjoys with China. We will step up and expand these relations, on infrastructure, agriculture, education, among other broad array of issues for the mutual benefit of our countries,” Ruto said when he met with Liu Yuxi, China’s special representative on African affairs, shortly after taking office.

During his campaign, Ruto ran on an anti-China platform, vowing to deport Chinese nationals doing jobs he said should be reserved for Kenyans, promising to make opaque government contracts with Beijing public and pledging to cut borrowing. Read more 

Avicii’s family sells 75% of producer’s recordings to Abba star Björn Ulvaeus’ entertainment company (Metro)

The family of Swedish DJ Avicii have sold the majority rights of his master recordings and publishing to Abba star Björn Ulvaeus’ entertainment company, Pophouse.

The venture will allow the late musicians’ legacy to be continued throughout the world, as Pophouse will acquire 75% ownership while the family and estate will maintain 25%.

Avicii, whose real name is Tim Bergling, died by suicide in April 2018 in Muscat, Oman, at the age of 28, sending shockwaves across the music industry.

The deal will now allow his parents, Klas Bergling and Anki Liden, to take a step back and focus more time on the Tim Bergling Foundation, which they set up in their son’s name a year after his death to support people and organisations in the field of mental illness and suicide prevention. US will ‘never’ recognise Russian claims in Ukraine (BBC)

The US will “never, never, never” recognise Russia’s attempt to annex territory in Ukraine, President Joe Biden has said.

He was speaking ahead of a speech on Friday from Vladimir Putin, who is expected to declare that four Ukrainian regions are joining Russia.

The Kremlin says Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson voted to join Russia in recent referendums.

But Ukraine and the West have dismissed the votes as a sham.

New horror film Smile has been given the Stephen King stamp of approval, so that’s a good sign, right?

Joshua suggests live scorecards in boxing (Punch)

Two-time heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has suggested that boxing could change its rules to introduce live scorecards during fights.

The 32-year-old has been outpointed by Ukrainian heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk in their last two fights.

Joshua has now said live scorecards could show how fights are playing out as they go on, meaning boxers know how many of the remaining rounds they need to win, or if they need to score a knockdown.

In the fight against Usyk, if he had known for a fact that he was down on the cards, it could have encouraged Joshua to search harder for a knockout in the later stages of the bout. Read more

Ministry sues for calm as uncertainty hangs over 2022 NFF elections (DailyTrust)

The Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development has urged Nigerian football stakeholders to remain calm and abide by the Federal High Court Order by refraining from acting or taking actions that would amount to contempt of court.

This was made known yesterday in a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Alhaji Ismaila Abubakar, with regard to the uncertainty hanging over the NFF elections scheduled for Friday, September 30 in Benin.

 “The Ministry is also aware of the Court Order made by Hon. Justice I.E. Ekwo of the Federal High Court on the 15th day of September, 2022 whereby the Court had directed all parties, including NFF and the Hon. Minister of Youth and Sports Development to maintain status quo ante pending the final Order of Court”, he said

The Permanent Secretary stated further that “Following from the above Order of Court, which had also been served on the Office of the Honourable Minister of Youth and Sports Development as 3rd Defendant in the case under reference, the Hon. Minister of Youth and Sports Development will obey and abide by the Court Order and hereby advises all other Defendants in this case, including NFF to abide by the Order of Court by not doing anything or taking any further step(s); particularly, as regard NFF elections that will be or could be interpreted to amount to disobedience to lawful Court Order or contempt of Court.” Read more

Diri doles out cash for Commonwealth Games medalists, others (Sun)

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has announced a reward package for sportsmen and women from the state that participated in different competitions recently.

Olympic silver medalist, who won gold in wrestling at the Commonwealth Games, Blessing Oborududu and sprinter, Timma Godbless, who won gold in 4×100 relay for Nigeria in the African Senior Athletics Championship in Mauritius were among recipients of the governor’s gesture.

28 years after, FG redeems house pledge to late Keshi (Punch)

The Federal Government, Thursday, has handed over the Certificate of Occupancy and other land documents to late Stephen Keshi and 14 other members of the 1994 Super Eagles Team.

The Sport’s Legend was gifted a three-bedroom flat in Delta State.

According to a statement signed by the Director, Press and Public Relations, Blessing Lere-Adams, the handing-over ceremony was done at the headquarters of the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, on Thursday in Abuja.

It will be recalled that President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) early this year promised to gift houses to twenty-two members of the 1994 Super Eagles Team from the housing units under the National Housing Programme in any state of their choice. Read more
