Lagos Federal High Court decongests courtrooms, new judges resume duties (Guardian)

The Federal High Court Lagos on Tuesday, began decongestion and re-arrangement of court files, following resumption of court activities after the two-month-old strike by the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that registrars of various courts were busy sorting out court files, while others were seen moving files to different court rooms.

NAN reports that JUSUN had on April 6, began an indefinite strike action seeking implementation of financial autonomy for the Judiciary.

The strike was however, called off on June 9, after settlement talks had been reached between the union and relevant stakeholders. Read more

5 arrested over murder of land agent in Lagos (Punch)

Operatives of the Force Criminal Investigation Department, Abuja, have arrested five persons in connection with the alleged murder of a land agent, Yemi Taiwo, in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro had reported that Yemi had gone to a site with his friend, Femi Animashaun, in the Isiu community, Ikorodu area of the state on Friday, September 4, 2020, when some vigilante members, known as Onyabo, and some hoodlums arrested them for allegedly planning to abduct a monarch in the state.

It was gathered that the duo were taken to the secretariat of the Ikorodu North Local Council Development Area before policemen took them to their annexe office in the Ladegboye area of Ikorodu, where they were allegedly tortured.

The deceased’s wife, Olabisi, had told our correspondent that Yemi and Animashaun were allegedly rejected upon their transfer to the Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, due to the degrees of the injuries they sustained while being tortured.

However, our correspondent learnt that the police had arrested five suspects in respect to the incident. Read more

Nigeria to receive 3.92 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine in July (Punch)

The Federal Government on Tuesday said it is expecting a shipment of 3.92 million doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine by end of July or early August.

The Executive Director, National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr Faisal Shuaib, disclosed this at a press conference in Abuja.

He said, “We now have information that Nigeria will get 3.92m doses of Oxford-Astrazeneca by end of July or early August.

“As we receive additional information on the exact dates in August, we will provide an update regarding timelines and details.” Read more

Controversy over alleged protest of soldiers in Ekiti (Nation)

Controversy has trailed reports that soldiers in Ekiti protested alleged non-payment of their accumulated allowances by Governor Kayode Fayemi.

Reports of the protest, which went viral on social media platforms, had claimed the soldiers blocked the roads leading to the Government House and Governor’s office.

Reacting to rumoured protest by the soldiers, the State Government said there was nothing like that.

Shekau’s loyalists confirm Boko Haram leader’s death, denounce ISWAP (Leadership)

Terrorist-members of the Jama’atu Ahlussunnah Lidda’awati Wal Jihad (JAS) otherwise known as Boko Haram, on Tuesday, confirmed the death of their leader, Abubakar Shekau.

Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) had on Wednesday May 19, 2021 said that Shekau blew himself up after refusing to surrender following his imminent arrest.

The Boko Haram leader was said to have killed himself with a bomb when he realised that the ISWAP fighters wanted to capture him alive.

ISWAP, which broke away from Shekau’s Boko Haram faction in 2016, said it disagreed with the late extremist leader over his excessive use of force, especially on Muslims in areas under his influence.

According to ISWAP leader, Abu Musab Albarnawi, his fighters took their arms, travelled through the Sahara, went into Shekau’s enclave, and engaged in a gun battle with his followers. Read more

NALDA seals pact with NYSC to boost food security (Guardian)

National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to establish a rice farm in Ebonyi state to boost food security in the country.

The rice farm would be established on a 52 hectares land owned by the NYSC in Ezillo, Ishielu Local Government Area of the state while NALDA would provide inputs and the technical know-how to develop the farm.

Speaking at the MoU signing ceremony, the Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of NALDA Prince Paul Ikonne said the authority is tapping into the vast resources that the NYSC has across the country to provide sufficient food for Nigerians and engage the Corps members to be more productive.

“NYSC has the foot soldiers and every year they churn them out while NALDA has the land and the technical know-how, this understanding is for the manpower and the technical know-how to come together in order to produce the much-needed job opportunity and food security that Mr. President has been advocating for, for the country,” Ikonne said. Twitter founder Dorsey is liable for #EndSARS losses – Lai Mohammed (Guardian)

The Nigerian Government has said Twitter and its founder, Jack Dorsey, are “vicariously” liable for the losses the country suffered during the EndSARS protest.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, stated this on Tuesday when he featured on “Politics Nationwide”, a Radio Nigeria call-in programme monitored by the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja.

Mohammed alleged that Dorsey raised funds through Bitcoins to sponsor the EndSARS protest while his platform, Twitter, was used to fuel the crisis.

He said when he made the allegations earlier, Nigerians did not take him seriously until an online media outfit carried out an investigation and fact-checking. Read more

“Gone Girl” actress Lisa Banes dies aged 65 following accident (BBC)

US actress Lisa Banes has died aged 65 after being involved in a scooter collision in New York, police confirmed on Tuesday.

Banes was perhaps best known for playing Marybeth Elliott, the mother of Amy – the titular Gone Girl in David Fincher’s 2014 psychological thriller.

She also appeared in films like Cocktail and A Cure for Wellness.

Turkey collects thousands of cubic metres of ‘sea snot’ (AlJazeera)

Turkey has collected a total of 2,684 cubic metres (94,784 cubic feet) of mucilage from the Sea of Marmara over the last seven days.

Sharing the latest updates on the efforts to clear the waters, Turkey’s environment and urbanisation minister Murat Kurum said on Tuesday that ongoing operations were progressing well and that the collected mucilage had been sent for disposal.

The northwestern Yalova province, Istanbul, and the western province of Balikesir were among the areas where most of the mucilage has been cleared, he said.

“In 1,438 inspections we conducted as of June 14, we imposed an administrative fine of 7.55 million Turkish liras ($881,239) on businesses that did not fulfil the necessary conditions,” he said. Read more

The typical Covid symptoms are changing as the Delta variant takes hold across Britain.

According to research, a headache, sore throat and a runny nose are now the most commonly reported effects of coronavirus infection. 

The data has come from thousands of Covid sufferers who have logged their symptoms on the Zoe Covid Symptom app.

Professor Tim Spector, who runs the study, said the dominant Delta variant – first detected in India – can feel ‘more like a bad cold’ for younger people. Read more

NFTs are a form of unique ownership for digital-only items and do not necessarily include copyright control.

They have also been widely criticised as a money-making scheme and bad for the environment.

Global warning may have already passed an irreversible tipping point, the scientist who led the biggest-ever expedition to the Arctic has warned.

Presenting the first findings of the world’s largest mission to the North Pole, an expedition involving 300 scientists from 20 countries, Markus Rex said on Tuesday that the researchers had found that Arctic ice is retreating faster than ever before.

“The disappearance of summer sea ice in the Arctic is one of the first landmines in this minefield, one of the tipping points that we set off first when we push warming too far,” he said during the presentation in Germany’s capital, Berlin.

“And one can essentially ask if we haven’t already stepped on this mine and already set off the beginning of the explosion.” Read more

Joe Biden lands in Geneva for Putin summit after meeting with EU leaders (Metro)

US President Joe Biden arrived in Geneva on Tuesday afternoon for a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, after meeting with European Union leaders in Brussels. Biden’s highly anticipated talks with Putin will take place on Wednesday and are expected to run at least four hours.

Biden, wearing his usual aviator sunglasses, stepped off Air Force One around 4.20pm local time and took his time greeting guests on the tarmac. He then entered a bullet-proof vehicle and was driven in a motorcade to a luxury hotel.

The presidents are set to meet at a luxurious lakeside villa at 1pm local time on Wednesday, Biden officials aboard Air Force One said. An American athlete who received a four-year doping ban has blamed a pork burrito for her testing positive for steroids.

Shelby Houlihan, from Sioux City, Iowa, had dreams of representing her country at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo next month. But the 1500m national record-holder had her dreams shattered, after she was hit with a lengthy drugs ban by the World Anti-Doping Agency, in December last year.

The 28-year-old tested positive for a muscle-building steroid called nandrolone following an out-of-competition urine test.

Houlihan claims she’s never taken any performance enhancing drugs, including nandrolone, and has said traces of it were found in her test results because she ate a pork burrito the previous evening. Read more
