Lagos gives Bonded Terminals in Ajegunle 21-day ultimatum to relocate (Nation)

Lagos State Government has given 21–day ultimatum to owners of bonded terminals in Ajegunle in Ajeromi-Ifelodun area to vacate their current locations. The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Prince Rotimi Ogunleye stated government’s position on on Monday at Ikeja after a closed door meeting with the Lagos State Commissioner of Police Mr. Edgal Imohimi and owners of the terminal. Ogunleye also gave the trailers parked on various streets in Ajegunle and Olodi Apapa to vacate the streets within 48 hours which ends on Wednesday August,18th 2018. Read more

Lagos pays N467m to 187 retirees (Punch)

The Lagos State Government said it had credited N466.855m into the Retirement Savings Accounts of 187 of its retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme for the month of July. According to a statement from the Lagos State Pension Commission, more retirees from the State Universal Basic Education Board benefitted from this batch of payment. During the presentation in Lagos, the Commissioner for Establishments, Training and Pensions, Dr Akintola Oke, stated that despite the scarcity of funds, the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, still holds the pensioners in high esteem by ensuring the release of funds every month for the payment of their entitlements. Lagos releases N2.04bn to pensioners in 3 months (Punch)

The Lagos State Government has in the last three months released N2.04 billion to clear the arrears of pensions under the Contributory Pension Scheme. Mrs Folashade Onanuga, the Director General of the Lagos State Pension Commission made this known in a statement in Lagos on Monday. Onanuga said that the sum represented money released for the months of May, June and July. She said that N859.06 million was released for the retirees in May, N716.9 million in June and N466.9 million in July, totalling N2.04 billion. She, however, emphasised that the total pensions fund released by the state government under Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s administration as of June had hit N38 billion covering  9,214 retirees. AMCON: Youths flay Lagos Senators over Banire’s appointment (Vanguard)

A youth coalition in Lagos State has appealed to the three Senators representing Lagos at the National Assembly to rescind their decision not to support Dr. Muiz Banire’s nomination for the chairmanship position of the Asset Management Company of Nigeria, AMCON. At a press conference addressed by a Coalition of Lagos Youths, led by Folajimi Kosoko, Mademaku Abayomi Noah, Adesanya Shaheed and Yakubu Eleto, weekend, the group said the Senators’ move is not in the interest of Lagosians. The statement reads: “The petition coming at this time further points to the fact that Lagos indigenes have been relegated to the background in their State, they had been beaten, battered, forced to take back seat, they have been robbed of key positions in political appointments and have not been allowed to play key roles in the management of their affairs.” Read more

Epe fish traders decry poor conditions at Olowu market (SUN)

Fish traders at the popular Olowu fish market in Epe, Lagos State, on Monday decried the poor condition of facilities at the market, saying that it had become unsafe for their business activities. Mrs Folashade Ojikutu, the market’s women leader (Iyaoloja), said that the market has not been upgraded since it was built by the then Governor Lateef Jakande in 1990. She said that the dilapidated nature of the buildings have caused a lot of havoc and losses to traders at the market. “We have a record of about 15 traders that have been worse hit by the dilapidated buildings, which have negatively affected their business activities. “Particularly during the raining season, when there are heavy rainstorms, the walls of the shops usually give way and erosion sweeps away our fish. Lagos to establish ICT hub in Yaba (Punch)

The Lagos State Government in partnership with the private sector is planning to establish an ICT hub in Yaba, Lagos. A statement on Sunday stated that the ICT cluster named KITE@Yaba would provide an enabling environment that would facilitate and support the development of a technology cluster and ecosystem in the Yaba district. KITE, according to the statement, stands for knowledge, innovation, technology and entrepreneurship. It stated that the initiative would contribute significantly to the economic development of Nigeria and position Lagos State as the hub of innovation in Nigeria, and preferred destination for technology investors and innovators. Lagos LG CAN inaugurates new excos (Nation)

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area of Lagos State has inducted new elected executives’ officers to run the affairs of the body in the locality. In his welcome speech, Pastor Ajomu gave God all the glory for His sustaining Grace and indescribable love in making the day a reality. He however, charged his colleagues to always look in the direction of Christ as good example to follow. Lagos and prospect of Water Transportation (ThisDay)

LASPOTECH denies its security assaulted student’s mother (Nation)

The Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH) has denied that its security men assaulted Mrs Folake Shokoya, mother of one of its student, Bolutife Idowu, on July 11, 2018 at the institution’s Ikorodu campus. The mother had claimed that she was assaulted by men of the polytechnic’s security unit when she responded to a call from Idowu, a National Diploma II student of the Hospitality Management Technology Department, that they beat him for wearing earrings to the campus. Mrs Shokoya reported that she ended up with a broken lip, bruises and torn clothes as a result of the assault. However, the Deputy Registrar, Information and Public Relations, Olanrewaju Kuye, said in a statement that Mrs Shokoya had attacked the security guards instead and refused all entreaties to settle the issue amicably. Unilag, centre move to shore up Lagos land development (Guardian)

To proffer a lasting solution to housing, two organisations have initiated a platform to accelerate land development and administration in Lagos State. The platform tagged, International Conference on Land and Development in Lagos, pioneered by University of Lagos Research and Innovation office, Akoka and Centre for Housing and Sustainable Development Studies is aimed at bringing together experts and stakeholders to discuss various issues relating to land in metropolitan Lagos. LASG agency resolves 8,000 disputes in 6 months (Punch)

The Lagos State Citizens Mediation Centre says it has resolved 8,000 disputes that should have gone to court in the last six months. The Director, CMC, Omotola Rotimi, stated this on Friday at the training organised for workers in the agency to update their knowledge on the global trend in mediation. Rotimi said, “The CMC received 14,000 cases in the last six months, out of which 8,000 has been resolved.” The director added that the centre recovered N680m for Lagosians in the form of insurance and others through mediation between January and June 2018. Omotola expressed the confidence that the participants would be better equipped to resolve more disputes after the training. Read more

Club decries menace of trucks on Lagos roads (Nation)

Yoruba Tennis Club, Lagos, is concerned about the nuisance trucks are causing on Lagos roads. It said the menace had negative effect on the economy and create discomfort for road users. Club Chairman Prof. Adetokunbo Fabamwo spoke at the weekend at the club, at its monthly Business Luncheon. He noted that the trucks have obstructed traffic, particularly from Ikorodu Road and Oshodi-Apapa Expressway through access roads in Apapa leading to the ports. The club hailed efforts by the government and the visits of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, including meetings with stakeholders. Read more
