Lagos goes tough on drug abuse, plans 100-man walk against scourge (Vanguard)
In a bid to step up its campaign against all forms of drug abuse, the Lagos State Government on Tuesday said it has concluded plans to stage a 1000-man walk against the scourge and raise awareness on its inherent danger especially among youths. Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr. Agboola Dabiri who disclosed this while addressing journalists at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, Ikeja, ahead of the launch of a rigorous and renewed campaign under the acronym, Lagos State Kicks against Drug Abuse (LASKADA), said the Government was leaving no stone unturned in its effort to dissuade youths who are prime victims of the practice. Daddy Freeze’s message to Chimamanda causes controversy (Punch)
Popular On-Air Personality, Daddy Freeze, has again ignited a discourse following celebrated writer, Chimamanda Ngozi-Adichie’s take on chivalry and feminism. The OAP generated mixed reactions after he wrote an open letter to Chimamanda following her recent comments on chivalry. He downplayed her feminist ideologies, stating that the female gender had the innate belief that men must bear the greater weight of a physical burden. Freeze backed his allegation by sighting an incident he witnessed some days ago. He said, “Dear Chimamanda, yesterday, while driving home from our online church service held on the radio, I saw a broken down ‘Danfo’ bus. All the women remained on the bus, while the men assisted the conductor in pushing the bus, as the driver tried his best to jump-start it.” Read more
Lagos abolishes 50-yr-old promotion tradition (Vanguard)
The Lagos State Government, yesterday, abolished the promotion of civil servants based on career progression, saying the move is aimed at ensuring efficient service delivery in the state. The state’s Head of Service, Mrs Folasade Adesoye, disclosed this while briefing newsmen on this year’s public service week, with the theme Transforming Governance to Realise the Sustainable Development Goals, in Ikeja. Adesoye said: “To this extent, all government officials now have clearly defined job schedules against which their performance will be assessed. This approach is based on the perception that governance must be open, timely, effective and efficient.” Read more
Ambode urges women to fight domestic violence (Punch)
The wife of the Lagos State governor, Bolanle Ambode, has urged women to speak against domestic violence and child abuse. Ambode said this at the Lagos Women’s Forum organised to address issues of women’s health and recurring social vices in the society. At the forum, with the theme, ‘Woman…Your Health, Your Social Environment,’ Ambode noted that good health was a prerequisite for every other thing. LASG trains survivors of domestic violence (Punch)
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team says it had concluded its first training for survivors of domestic violence. The Coordinator of the DSVRT, Titilayo Vivour-Adeniyi, in a statement on Tuesday, said the training was in line with Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s mandate that survivors of domestic and sexual violence must get a new lease of life. She said from the cases handled so far, at least 70 per cent of the survivors were afraid to walk out of an abusive relationship because they were financially dependent on the abuser. Read more
Lagos, Edo top states with highest airfares in May – NBS (DailyTimes)
Lagos, Edo and Abuja are the top three destinations within Nigeria with the highest air fares paid by air passengers in May 2018. The Transport Fare Watch report for May 2018 released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed that states with the cheapest airfares in May were Katsina, Osun and Nasarawa. The report covers the following categories: bus journey within the city per drop constant route; bus journey intercity, state route, charge per person; airfare charge for specified routes single journey; journey by motorcycle (Okada) per drop; and waterway passenger transport. Lagos joins other Cities for World Music Day (ThisDay)
To commemorate this year’s edition of World Music Day, Lagos has joined other cities in over 120 countries across the globe for a festival of free live music called Make Music Lagos. It is the Lagos edition of Make Music Day under the guidance of the US-based Make Music Alliance. The festival had its maiden edition in 2016, delivering three concerts with performances by Bez, Cobhams Asuquo, Tosin Martins, Olufunmi, Wura Samba, Johnny Drille, Pita, Wole Oni, Lagos Mainland Choir, amongst others. At last year’s edition, Lagos music enthusiasts witnessed a collaboration of Mass Appeal, Learn to Play and Street Studio in multiple venue concerts. Read more

Lagos residents lament electricity bills for 8-month darkness (Punch)
Residents of Ijaolu community, in the Elepe area of Ikorodu, Lagos State, have lamented being charged for the electricity they did not consume. They said sometime in September 2016, the community transformer developed a fault. The residents explained that at the time, they used generators to power their houses with the hope that the fault would be fixed. They claimed that during the period, no bills were issued by Ikeja Electric, adding that the transformer problem was fixed after eight months. Read more
2,500 shanties for demolition at Oko-Oba, Agege (NewTelegraph)
Lagos States government has given a seven-day removal notice to over 2,500 owners and occupiers of illegal structures, shanties and containerized shops at Abattoir and Oko-Oba, Agege areas of the metropolis. The Chairman of the Lagos State Task Force, SP Olayinka Egbeyemi, who led the enforcement team of the agency, said the structures, shanties and containerized shops were served ‘Removal Order’ within Abattoir and Fagba by Railway side, Agege. Egbeyemi said that these illegal shanties were occupied by miscreants and hoodlums who terrorised citizens around Agege area by dispossessing them of their valuables early in the morning and late at night. Illegal structure owners in Agege get quit notice (Nation)
Lagos States Government yesterday served a seven-day notice on owners/occupiers of illegal structures and containerised shops around Abattoir and Oko-Oba in Agege to remove them forthwith. Chairman of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Unit (Task Force) Olayinka Egbeyemi, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), said over 2500 illegal structures including containerised shops were served ‘removal order’ within abattoir and Fagba by railway side, Agege. The shanties, he said, were occupied by miscreants and hoodlums who terrorise people. He said: “It is an eye-sore with miscreants and hoodlums freely smoking and selling Indian hemp including prostitution by underage boys and girls around the area” Read more
Lagos hotel deducts workers’ pensions without remittance, owes gratuities (Punch)
Ex-staff members of a hotel in FESTAC Town, Lagos, have called out the management of the facility, Chelsea Suites Limited, for allegedly refusing to pay their gratuities. The former workers also lamented that while they were in the employ of the hotel, deductions were made from their salaries without corresponding remittances to their pension funds administrators. Punch Metro gathered that the company in its conditions of service stated that certain percentage would be paid to staff members, who had spent five years and above, upon retirement or resignation. Husband ‘beats’ expectant wife to death 4 months after wedding (Nation)
Barely four months after marriage, a husband, Samuel Mgbeodinma, has allegedly beaten his wife, Gloria, to death in Lagos. The incident occurred at Ikotun in Alimosho Local Government Area of the state on Saturday night shortly after the Nigeria-Croatia World Cup match. The woman was said to have hit her head on the floor after being pushed by her husband. Mgbeodinma allegedly bundled her remains into his car, drove to his parents residence at Egbeda, parked and left without saying anything. His inlaws were said to have come for their daughter’s body at noon on Sunday. The cause of the couple’s scuffle could not be ascertained at press time last night. Read more
Man impersonates senator on Facebook, defrauds Nigerians (Punch)
The Lagos State Police Command has arrested one Joel Asabor for allegedly defrauding some Nigerians through a fake recruitment into the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation. Punch Metro learnt that Asabor, who was based in Delta State, impersonated the Senator representing Anambra South Constituency of Anambra State, Andy Uba, in whose name he opened a Facebook account. Through the Facebook account, the suspect reportedly conversed with job seekers who added him as friends on the platform. Our correspondent gathered that the victims were asked to pay between N200,000 and N350,000 for processing of employment into oil companies, as they were promised juicy incentives, including a salary of N850,000 per month. Wife of Lagos ex-deputy governor goes home (Nation)
It was a well lived life for Mrs Mosunmola Jafojo, wife of the late first Executive Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Chief Rafiu Jafojo. She died last May at the age of 79. The funeral ceremony for her began with wake keep on May 31, at Archbishop Vining Memorial Church Cathedral in Ikeja GRA, Lagos, while the lie-in-state and funeral service held at the same venue on June 1. She was buried the same day around 11:48 a.m. at Vaults and Gardens in Ikoyi area of Lagos. Guests were entertained at Excel Event Centre in Oregun, Ikeja Lagos and thanksgiving service held on June 3 at the same church. On June 1, friends, families and well-wishers gathered to celebrate her. Read more
