Lagos guard kills ‘tenant’ over rent payment (Punch)

A security guard with Corporate Victoria Gardens Security Company, Desmond Gudyu, has allegedly punched a 26-year-old man, Akeem Nuhu, to death during an altercation on Lugard Avenue, Ikoyi, Lagos State.

Gudyu, who was employed to guard a building in the area, was said to have accommodated Nuhu in his security post after the latter agreed to pay him rent.

Trouble started on Monday, October 10, when Nuhu, who worked as a motor boy in a pure water company, failed to pay the agreed sum.

This reportedly led to an argument between them as Gudyu allegedly punched Nuhu, who fell and died.

A contractor, Ayo Ipadeola, who worked in the area, said, “The security guard was the only one staying in that house. The victim, Nuhu, worked in a pure water company and he had nowhere to stay. That was why he entered into an agreement with Gudyu to sleep in his security post and pay him for it. Read more

Lagos to ban sale of bottled drinks exposed to sun (Nation)

The Lagos State Government says plans are underway to ban the sale of plastic bottled drinks exposed to the sunlight.

The General Manager of Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA), Mr Afolabi Solebo made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Friday.

“Plastic bottled drinks exposed to continuous sunlight are dangerous to health and very cancerous. Therefore, it will be part of our public enlightenment between now and the end of the year.

“So that by 2023, we will not only confiscate sucj drinks but we will prosecute people that are displaying those products under sunlight. Read more

Lagos moves enforcement of controversial parking levy to 2023 (Guardian)

Lagos State Government has postponed the enforcement of its controversial parking policy; payment of the levy to 2023.

Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA) said the enforcement of the parking regulations will take place in the second quarter of 2023.

LASPA general manager Adebisi Adelabu while addressing journalists on Wednesday refuted claims that the authority was set up solely for the purpose of revenue generation.

Adelabu explained that the parking authority’s mandate was to entrench a parking culture in the state. Read more 

Zungeru Hydro Power Project 96% completed – Power Minister (DailyTrust)

The Minister of Power Engr. Abubakar D. Aliyu, has said the Zungeru Hydroelectric Power Project is now 96% completed.

The minister stated this when he paid a working visit to the Zungeru Hydro Electric Power project in Niger State.

Engr. Abubakar D. Aliyu also said that the Zungeru Hydro Electric Power is one of the priority projects of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. The project is set to add 700 megawatts (zero carbon) to the national grid.

“The project is set to be commissioned soon, as part of the federal government’s efforts to improve electricity supply across Nigeria and to fulfil President Muhammadu Buhari’s commitment to vision 30:30:30 and achieving netzero by 2060, as promised at COP—26,” the minister added.

He also noted that the federal government had ensured that all the requirements and needs of contractors have been provided to ensure that it is completed and on time. Read more

Stakeholders in Lagos State have been charged to remain committed and encouraged to drive the state economic diversification policy in order to overcome the current economic challenges.

The Commissioner for Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives, Dr. Lola Akande, gave the charge at a press briefing to announce the maiden edition of Lagos Island Business Connect Fair 2022 in Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos, on Friday.

A’Court stops execution of judgment freeing Kanu (Punch)

The Court of Appeal in Abuja on Friday stopped the execution of its own judgment which faulted the rendition of Kanu from Kenya to Nigeria and also set aside the terrorism charges against him.

Justice Haruna Tsanami in a ruling upheld the application of the Federal Government and ordered that the execution of the judgment be put on hold.

The Federal Government had applied that the execution of the judgment be suspended pending the resolution of its appeal lodged at the Supreme Court. Read more

Appeal Court reverses judgement sacking Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi (Channels)

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has reversed the March 8 judgment of the Abuja Federal High Court, sacking Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi and his deputy, Eric Kelechi Igwe, for defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a judgement on Friday, a three-member panel of the appellate court led by Justice Haruna Tsanammi, held that the 1999 Constitution as amended, did not provide any punishment for a governor or deputy governor who defected from the party on which platform they got to office.

The appellate court further held that the only option opened to a political party, aggrieved by the defection of a governor or deputy governor, is to explore the impeachment option provided in the Constitution.

The court aligned with an earlier decision on the same issue given by the Enugu division of the court. Read more 

Bandits abduct 8 residents in Kaduna (DailyTrust)

Suspected bandits have abducted eight people in two local government areas of Kaduna State.

The attackers reportedly invaded Autan Kuli village in Yakawada ward of Giwa Local Government Area and abducted six people.

A resident of the area, who wanted to be anonymous, said, “The bandits invaded the village around 2pm Thursday, shooting sporadically in the air.

“They however succeeded in abducting six people: Usman mai Unguwa, Mashakuru Audu, Umma Nasiru, Hauwa Nasiru, Jamilu umar, and Sunusi Bashari.” Read more

The husband of US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been “violently assaulted” after a break-in at their California home.

Paul Pelosi, 82, was taken to hospital and is expected to make a full recovery, a spokesperson said.

The suspect, who has not been named, is in custody but the motive for the attack is unclear.

Mrs Pelosi was not at the San Francisco residence when the incident took place on Friday morning.

Taylor Swift says she knew in advance she wasn’t getting a role in the 2012 Les Misérables movie.

On Friday’s episode of BBC One’s The Graham Norton Show, the singer — who just released her new album Midnights last week — recalled her screen test for Tom Hooper’s film adaptation of the iconic stage musical, revealing that she knew going in it wasn’t going to work out.

“Basically I was up for two roles,” Swift, 32, explained to Norton, pointing to the two love-struck heroines first introduced in Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel of the same name. “I had the look of Cosette and the range vocally of Éponine, so it was established I was there for a good time but not for a long time. I wasn’t going to get the role.”

Quentin Tarantino responds to Kanye West’s claim he stole idea for Django Unchained (NME)

Quentin Tarantino has dismissed Kanye West’s claim that the director stole his idea for his film Django Unchained.

Earlier this month, the rapper claimed he had pitched the “Django” idea to Tarantino and Jamie Foxx as the music video for his 2005 hit ‘Gold Digger’. Django Unchained, released in 2012, followed a freed slave (played by Foxx) who works with a bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz) to rescue his wife from a plantation.

Speaking on Piers Morgan Uncensored, West said: “Tarantino can write a movie about slavery where – actually him and Jamie [Foxx], they got the idea from me because the idea for Django I pitched to Jamie Foxx and Quentin Tarantino as they video for ‘Gold Digger’. And then Tarantino turned it into a him.”

Tarantino responded to West’s claim during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Thursday (October 27), saying the rapper’s version of events “didn’t happen”. Read more

Russia ends civilian pull-out before Kherson battle (BBC)

Russian officials say they have completed an operation to move civilians out of the southern city of Kherson ahead of an expected battle with Ukrainian forces.

Up to 70,000 civilians are said to have crossed the Dnipro river, in what Ukraine has called forced deportations.

“We’re preparing Kherson for defence,” said Russian militia commander Alexander Khodakovsky.

Usman was on the way to securing another decision victory, but with just a minute remaining in the fight, Edwards caught his opponent with a head kick, which knocked him out.

The Nigerian Nightmare’s reign as the UFC’s welterweight champion came to an end after five successful title defences. He was demoted in the organisation’s pound-for-pound list to No.3.

Pogba ‘unlikely’ to play before World Cup, says Juve’s Allegri (Guardian) 

Paul Pogba will probably not play for Juventus before the upcoming World Cup, coach Massimiliano Allegri said on Friday.

The France star has not played for Juve since returning to the Serie A outfit this summer due to a knee injury, and his team play just five more times between now and the Qatar tournament.

Juve’s final fixture of 2022 is against Lazio in Turin on November 13, and Allegri is not convinced that he will feature before Les Bleus begin the defence of their world title.
