Lagos investigates engineer’s death at construction site (Punch)

The Lagos State Safety Commission has launched an investigation into the death of a civil engineer, Olalekan Oloruntoba, who reportedly died while operating a crane at a construction site in the state, PUNCH Metro exclusively reports.

The safety commission, through its spokesperson, Adewunmi Okoh, announced on Saturday that an investigation was underway. This statement followed an inquiry from our correspondent regarding the commission’s response to the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Several sources who witnessed the September 23 incident declined to reveal the construction site’s location, fearing their identities might be exposed. Read more 

Assaulted Driver: Police caution lawmaker, others against intimidation (Channels)

The Police Command in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has taken over an assault incident which involved a Bolt driver Stephen Abuwatseya and a federal lawmaker Alex Mascot Ikwechegh. 

The police said the assaulted e-hailing App driver reported the incident at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters in the nation’s capital.

The police also warned Nigerians including the lawmaker against using the name of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, to intimidate other citizens. Read more

Rev. Father kidnapped in Edo (Dailytrust)

A Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Thomas Awhome Oyode, has been reportedly kidnapped by gunmen suspected to be kidnappers in Edo state.

The incident happened at Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary School, Ivanokpodi, in Agenegbode, Etsako East local government of Edo state.

It was gathered that the gunmen stormed the seminary on Sunday at about 7pm, kidnapped the Reverend Father and whisked him into the bush. Read more

Former Governor of Ogun State, Ibikunle Amosun, revealed that his late mother carried him for three and a half years, calling his birth nothing short of a miracle.

He noted that many people struggled to believe he was a human being at birth due to the unusually long gestation period.

Amosun made this revelation during the 25th remembrance prayer for his late mother, Alhaja Rafatu Sanusi-Amosun, held at the Amosun family residence in Abeokuta. Alhaja Sanusi-Amosun passed away on October 27, 1999. Read more

Former board member, Oyewumi advocates support for NYSC (Tribune)

A former member of the National Governing Board of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Prince Kunle Oyewumi has appealed to the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande to ensure that presidential assent is given to the NYSC Trust Fund bill in order to strengthen the scheme.

Emphasizing the importance of the NYSC to national development, Oyewumi who also chaired the NYSC Reforms Committee stressed that the scheme has consistently promoted youth empowerment, national integration and cohesion.

Bobrisky to face fresh criminal charges as panel indicts 4 prison officers (Punch)

Controversial crossdresser, Idris Okuneye, aka Bobrisky, may face fresh criminal charges over claims that he served his jail term in a private apartment and bribed officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to drop money laundering charges against him.

Sunday PUNCH exclusively gathered that a panel set up to investigate the claims recommended that he should face defamation and criminal charges.

Bobrisky was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment on April 12 for abusing the naira. He was released from prison on August 5.

David Harris death: The Warriors actor dies, aged 75 (Independent)

The actor David Harris, best known for his role in the cult classic film The Warriors, has died, aged 75.

His daughter Davina Harris revealed to The New York Times that the star, who had cancer, passed away on 25 October.

Harris was born on 18 June 1949 in New York City and studied acting at the High School of Performing Arts and then later the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Read more

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has proposed a two-day truce in Gaza that would potentially pave the way for a long-term ceasefire, as Israel’s genocide has killed more than 1,000 Palestinians in the northern areas of the Strip in less than a month.

El-Sisi’s proposal, which includes exchanging four Israeli captives held in Gaza for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, came as thousands of trapped civilians endure relentless Israeli attacks that have killed at least 50 people, including five journalists, since Sunday.

At a news conference in Cairo on Sunday, el-Sisi said the 48-hour lull in fighting and prisoner exchange would be followed by more talks in the next 10 days, with the hope that negotiators could hammer out a peace deal. Read more 

Paedophile who made ‘chilling’ AI child abuse images jailed in landmark case (Independent)

A man has been jailed for 18 years after creating AI-generated images of child sexual abuse in an “utterly chilling” landmark case.

Hugh Nelson, a 27-year-old from Bolton with a Masters degree in graphics, pleaded guilty to 11 offences in August at Bolton Crown Court, including three counts each of distributing and making indecent images.

The former student accepted requests from individuals via online chatrooms for “bespoke” explicit images depicting children being harmed both sexually and physically, and used pictures of real children to create some of the computer-generated images, the court heard. Read more

Ethiopian runner Yomif Kejelcha made every second count as he broke the men’s half-marathon record by just one second Sunday.

Kejelcha finished strongly in the Spanish city of Valencia to set a time of 57 minutes, 30 seconds, knocking a single second off the record set in 2021 by Ugandan runner Jacob Kiplimo in Lisbon, Portugal.

Kejelcha is a former world championship silver medalist in the 10,000 meters and holds the indoor world record for the mile, which he set in Boston in 2019. Read more

Real Madrid on Sunday strongly condemned the racist behavior of its fans at the El Clasico football match, which saw Madrid thumped 4-0 by rival FC Barcelona on Saturday.

Several Black Barcelona players, including 17-year-old phenom and Spanish national team player Lamine Yamal, faced racist insults during the game.

Yamal, for instance, was targeted with abuse after becoming the youngest player ever to score a goal in El Clasico, the name for the match between Spain’s two biggest clubs.

Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani partially dislocated his left shoulder during the seventh inning of Saturday’s Game 2 of the World Series against the New York Yankees when he tried to steal second base.

Ohtani’s status for Monday’s Game 3 in New York is unclear. Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts said Ohtani “had a little left shoulder subluxation” and would get image testing either Saturday night or Sunday.

Ohtani clutched his left forearm after being tagged by shortstop Anthony Volpe for the final out in the inning on a feet first slide. He laid near the bag for a couple minutes before being tended to by trainers and leaving the field. Read more
