Lagos Judiciary upgrades electronic filing system with E-Payment (Nation)
The Lagos State Judiciary has upgraded its Electronic Filing System (EFS) through E-Payment.
The new initiative is contained in a circular dated June 4, titled “Public Notice” and signed by the Chief Registrar, Mrs Olubusola Okunuga.
The circular stated that the new development is to ensure a faster approach to filing and processing of cases. Read more
Melaye loses as tribunal affirms Adeyemi’s election (Punch)
The Kogi State Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal, sitting in Abuja, on Wednesday dismissed the petition filed by former Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, to challenge the victory of his successor, Senator Smart Adeyemi, at the November 2019 by-election.
Delivering judgment on the petition, the three-man panel led by Justice Isa Sambo, unanimously affirmed Adeyemi’s election as the winner of the disputed poll.
The rerun, which held in 53 polling units on November 30, 2019, was ordered in the judgment of the Court of Appeal which nullified Melaye’s victory in the main election which earlier held in March 2019. Read more
UI management confirms Obaseki’s result (Vanguard)
The management of the University of Ibadan has confirmed that the Governor of Edo State, Mr Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki, graduated from the institution in 1979.
The confirmation was in response to a call reportedly made by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Adams Oshiomhole that the institution should confirm the results tendered by the embattled governor for his participation in the forthcoming gubernatorial election in the state.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Kaduna has commended Governor Nasir El-Rufai and the State Standing Committee on Covid-19 for allowing places of worship to reopen, 75 days after a partial lockdown. The apex Christian body said the lockdown imposed on the state had actually helped to reduce the number of persons infected with the virus and led to a lower deaths rate in Kaduna State. Bill against stigmatisation of rape victims, insurgency passes 2nd reading (Nation)
A bill to prohibit the stigmatisation of victims of rape and insurgency has passed second reading in the Senate.
This followed debate on the general principles of the bill by the sponsor, Sen. Sani Musa (Niger-APC) during Wednesday’s plenary.
The bill is entitled “A Bill for an Act to Prohibit the Stigmatisation of Victims of Rape and Insurgency in order to encourage victims of rape to testify in court and victims of insurgency to be reintegrated into the community of his or choice.” Read more
Confusion in Ondo court as two human heads are brought as exhibits (Vanguard)
There was a mild drama and confusion at an Ondo State Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Akure, Wednesday, when two human heads were brought to the court as exhibit.
The two heads which were found in possession of the suspects who are grave diggers were brought to the court as exhibit caused some stir.
Four suspected ritualists arrested with five human heads were charged to the court on a three-count charge of conspiracy, unlawful possession, and indecently tampering with a corpse. Read more

The coalition of United political parties (CUPP) has condemned the decision to bar journalists from the coverage of the public hearing on the infectious diseases Bill.
CUPP’s spokesperson, Ikenga Imo Ugochinye called on all opposition lawmakers to outrightly reject the report on the public hearing by the time it is brought to the floor of the House for consideration in the interest of Nigerians.

Whatever the level of attraction a woman feels for a man, the same may not always be the case for her eggs. That’s according to a new study that looked into the chemicals used by a female egg to attract male sperm. ‘Human eggs release chemicals called chemoattractants that attract sperm to unfertilized eggs. We wanted to know if eggs use these chemical signals to pick which sperm they attract,’ said John Fitzpatrick, an associate professor at Stockholm University, which partnered with the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) for the study. Merriam-Webster will update ‘racism’ definition after request (NYPost)
Merriam-Webster Dictionary will be updating its definition of the word “racism” after a complaint from one Missouri woman, reports said on Tuesday.
Kennedy Mitchum, 22, led the charge for the dictionary to rework its entry last month, following the death of George Floyd while in the custody of four Minneapolis police officers.
“With everything going on, I think it’s important everyone is on the same page,” Mitchum told KMOV-TV.
The Florissant resident, a recent graduate of Drake University, said she was spurred to action by recent conversations she had about racism and injustice, where people would point to Merriam-Webster’s definition to dismiss her concerns. Read more
NATO chief Stoltenberg warns Beijing nearing West in multiple ways (RT)
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has said the West “cannot ignore” either the military or economic rise of China, and admitted that the world is “facing a shift in the global balance of power.”
Speaking to BBC Radio on Wednesday, Stoltenberg said Beijing was creeping closer to the West in multiple ways: through cyberspace, telecommunications, critical infrastructure and in Arctic exploration.

Female corrections officer accused of having sex with inmate (NYPost)
A corrections officer at an Idaho prison had sex with a inmate — and gave him raunchy photographs to remember her by, authorities said.
Miranda Ackerman, 29, is facing charges of having sexual contact with an adult inmate and unlawfully introducing contraband into the Idaho Maximum Security Institution, where she worked until her resignation in early April, the Idaho Press reports.
Ackerman, of Nampa, is suspected of getting hot and heavy with the inmate over a one-month span starting on Feb. 9 in an area of the prison where inmates generally get haircuts, Ada County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Patrick Orr told the newspaper. Read more
Italian woman prepares olives during brain tumour operation (BBC)
Brain operation patients have been asked to play the violin or the guitar during surgery, but until now there is no record of anyone stuffing olives on the operating table.
A 60-year-old Italian woman did just that during a procedure to remove a tumour from her left temporal lobe.
The neurosurgeon at Ancona’s Riuniti hospital said the two and a half hour procedure “went very well”.
His patient is said to have prepared 90 olives in the space of an hour.
Awake brain surgery, as it is known, is used to treat some neurological conditions such as tumours that affect the areas of the brain responsible for vision, movement or speech. Read more
EU proposes members reopen external borders from July 1 (France24)
The European Commission will recommend EU member states begin to reopen their external frontiers to travellers from outside the bloc from July 1, diplomatic chief Josep Borrell said Wednesday.
The decision on easing restrictions imposed to slow the spread of the coronavirus rests with national capitals, but Borrell said Brussels would suggest “a gradual and partial lifting” of the ban.
EU member states have begun to ease temporary restrictions on non-essential crossing of the borders within the bloc, with a goal of June 15 for restoring free travel. Read more
Roger Federer suffers injury ‘setback’ (NYPost)
Roger Federer will miss whatever remains of the coronavirus-impacted 2020 tennis season because of a setback in his recovery from surgery on his right knee.
The 20-time Grand Slam champion had arthroscopic surgery on his knee in February and said Wednesday in a statement on Twitter that he had a second procedure that will delay his return until 2021.
The 38-year-old Federer had initially planned to be sidelined for at least four months, but because the tour was suspended amid the coronavirus pandemic he has barely missed any elite tennis. Read more
Tokyo 2020 Olympics chief says rearranged Games will be simplified for 2021 (RT)
The chief executive officer of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic organizing committee ,Toshiro Muto, has warned fans that next summer’s rearranged Olympic Games will go ahead in a “simplified” format.
Speaking in a news conference on Wednesday, Muto said that the rearranged Olympics will “not be done with grand splendour”, but will instead be simplified.
The Olympics, which were originally set to take place in July 2020, were postponed until next year following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Read more

British world heavyweight champions Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury have agreed to a two-fight deal, says promoter Eddie Hearn.
Talks over an historic bout for the undisputed title began in early May.
Joshua, 30, holds the WBA, IBF and WBO belts while 31-year-old Fury is the WBC champion.

Man City to learn fate on European ban in July (Guardian)
Manchester City will learn whether their appeal against a two-season ban from European competition has been successful “during the first half of July”, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) announced on Wednesday.
City were banned by UEFA and handed a 30 million euro ($34 million, £27 million) fine for allegedly overstating sponsorship revenue to hide that they had not complied with financial fair play (FFP) rules between 2012 and 2016.

Neymar faces criminal complaint for homophobia (Punch)
A Brazilian gay rights activist has filed a criminal complaint against Neymar for homophobia, after the football superstar called his mother’s boyfriend an anti-gay slur in comments leaked to the media.
The Sao Paulo prosecutor’s office confirmed to AFP it had received the complaint, which it must now examine to decide whether to open a case against the Paris Saint-Germain and Brazil star.
Neymar’s communications team declined to comment on the complaint. Read more
