Lagos landlord, developer, agents defraud 66 accommodation seekers of N16m (Punch)

Over 66 prospective tenants have been thrown into confusion as the landlord, Olatunji Joseph, in connivance with a developer, Aderonke Olaleye, and other allegedly yet-to-be identified agents swindled them of over N16m. The money was meant as rents for five flats in a newly-constructed one-storey building at No. 11 Abeni Close, Asa Estate, in the Gbagada area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Joseph had contracted Olaleye to redevelop his bungalow into a one-storey building, but while construction was ongoing, some agents were told that flats in the building were available for rent and an advertisement was placed on two websites to attract prospective accommodation seekers. Court orders seizure of Lagos firm over alleged N4.6 billion bank loan (Guardian)

Justice Chuka Obiozor of the Federal High Court, Lagos State, has restrained the management of Shoreline Power Company from interfering with a receiver-manager, Taiwo Ogbara, appointed by Ecobank Nigeria over its assets.

Other defendants in the action are Orikolade Karim, Tunde Karim, Yinka Karim, Marc Hasenclever and Graeme Stout.

The court restrained them from obstructing Ogbara in the course of his duties as receiver-manager pending the determination of the motion on notice. Read more

RRS nabs suspect who robbed TV presenter in tricycle (Punch)

A suspect arrested by the men of the Rapid Response Squad of the Lagos State Police Command for using a tricycle to rob a television presenter said he was being paid N8,000 by his gang for every operation he participated in.

The suspect, Timileyin Adebayo, 23, in company with three others currently on the run, had on July 12, 2019, while pretending to be passengers in a tricycle, used knives and a cutlass to dispossess a lady of her belongings. Read more

Teacher docked for allegedly raping teenage student (Guardian)

A 28-year-old teacher, Idowu Daniel, was yesterday remanded in prison by an Ikeja Chief Magistrates Court for allegedly raping a 17-year-old secondary school student. The Chief Magistrate, Olufunke Sule-Amzat, who did not take the plea of the defendant, ordered that he should be remanded in Kirikiri Prisons.

Mrs Sule-Amzat ordered the police to send the case file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice. The defendant, who lives at Abule-Egba area of Lagos, is facing a charge of defilement. Read more

Suspended Ogun council chairmen want reinstatement (Guardian)

A section of the Ogun State Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun and the House of Assembly to reverse the suspension of 20 councils and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) chairmen.

The Eighth Assembly led by former Speaker, Suraj Adekunbi had passed a resolution suspending all councils and LCDAs on Friday, May 31, 2019. Read more

The Kwara state chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has appealed to the state government, under the able leadership of Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to urgently assist ailing former staff of the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), Akinloye Oyebanji.

PenCom holds verification, enrollment exercise for Federal workers retiring 2020 (Sun)

The National Pension Commission (PenCom) on Monday continued its 2019 verification and enrolment exercise for employees of Federal Government Treasury-Funded Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) due to retire between January 1 and December 31, 2020.

The Spokesman of the Commission, Peter Aghahowa in a chat with journalists at the Women Development Center, Abuja, venue of the event said the exercise remains vital as it enables the government to determine its pension liabilities each year and make adequate budgetary provisions for it. Read more

Simba and Mufasa reigned supreme this weekend as Disney’s The Lion King dominated box office charts. Director Jon Favreau’s remake of the animated classic collected a massive $185 million from 4,756 North American theaters during its first three days of release.

In yet another win for Disney, the movie landed the best domestic launch for a PG film and set a new record for the month of July. That figure represents the second-best domestic debut of the year behind Disney and Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame ($357 million). FIFA’s African football takeover plan set for court challenge (Vanguard)

FIFA’s plan to take over the running of African football is set to face a possible roadblock, with an executive committee member of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) saying he will challenge the decision in court.

Hasan Bility, who is from Liberia and a CAF executive committee member for last two years, said he will ask the Swiss-based Court of Arbitration for Sport to declare invalid the agreement by which FIFA secretary general Fatma Samoura will be sent on a secondment to overhaul the African governing body. Bility said he also wants to ask the court to compel CAF to start a forensic audit of its finances, which he said the executive committee had previously agreed to, but CAF president Ahmad Ahmad then stalled. Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has showered plaudits on Super Eagles winger, Samuel Chukwueze, for his performance at the 2019 Africa Cup Of Nations, but was quick to warn the 20-year-old  to remain humble and hardworking because “pride is the virus that destroys talent.”
