Lagos man kills brother during fight over N1,000 (Guardian)

A man, Ibrahim Dauda, has allegedly killed his brother, Tunde, during a fight over N1,000 at their residence on Amusa Street, off Community Road, in the Obadore area of Igando, Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Ibrahim and Tunde were at home when an argument bordering on N1,000 ensued between them.

Our correspondent learnt that the argument degenerated and the brothers were said to be engaging in fisticuffs when Ibrahim ran into the house and reached for an iron rod. Read more 

Nigerian Air Force jet crash-lands at Lagos Airport (Leadership)

A Nigerian Air Force maritime patrol aircraft, on Monday, made an emergency landing at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

LEADERSHIP gathered that the aircraft, a Cessna Citation CJ3, which was on a routine flight to Ilorin, Kwara Stats, lost its tyres.

The incident, however, forced the aircraft to land on its underside without the aid of a landing gear.

According to reports, the aircraft crash-landed on Runway 18R with six passengers onboard. Fortunately, there were no casualties. Read more

3 confirmed dead in Rivers collapsed building (Guardian)

Three persons have been confirmed dead while others sustained injuries in a collapsed two -storey building under construction along Isi Ewu road, Nbodo Community in Ikwerre Local Council of Rivers State.

The Guardian gathered that the victims were labourers at the construction site when the incident occurred on Saturday evening. A preliminary investigation report received by operatives of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), revealed that the rods, pillars and blocks used in construction of the two- Storey building were far below specification.

The Ikwerre Local Council Chairman, Samuel Nwanosike was said to have mobilised three Pay loaders and provided necessary logistics, which enhanced rescue operations and recovery of the corpses by NSCDC, thereby reducing the number of casualties as some survivors were immediately rushed to hospitals for treatments. Assembly moves to end Magodo land crisis (Punch)

The recommendations of an 11-man ad hoc committee on the alleged conduct of executives of Gateway Zone Community Development Association, Magodo GRA Phase 1, has been adopted by the Lagos State House of Assembly.

This followed a resolution on a petition passed by the House at its plenary session on June 24, 2021, against one Oyebode Ojomu, purportedly acting for the CDA; General Manager, New Towns Development Authority, Adenrele Oni, and others.

According to a statement made available to newsmen on Monday, the recommendations of the committee were presented to the House by the Chairman, Sanai Agunbiade, who stated that investigation was carried out to ensure that the resolution of the House had been implemented. Read more 

Paul Adefarasin mother Hilda Joanne dies at 98 (Vanguard)

The Founding Pastor of House on the Rock, Paul Adefarasin, has announced the death of his mother, Mrs. Hilda Joanne Adefarasin, aged 98.

Adefarasin made this announcement on Monday when sharing a picture of his late mother via his Instagram page on Monday.

According to a statement by Adefarasin, the nonagenarian died at her home on Sunday, February 5, 2023. Read more 

Yobe North: Lawan floors Machina at Supreme Court (DailyTrust)

The Supreme Court has finally recognised Senate President Ahmed Lawan as the authentic candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Yobe North Senatorial District, sacking Bashir Machina earlier recognised by the Federal High Court in Damaturu and Court of Appeal in Abuja.

In the lead judgement, Justice Centus Nweze faulted the approach of Bashir Machina in commencing the suit at the Federal High Court Damaturu division through originating summons and without oral evidence to prove allegations of fraud.

The Federal High Court sitting in Damaturu had ordered the APC and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise Machina as the senatorial candidate for Yobe North. Read more

Court stops PDP from suspending, expelling Governor Wike (Channels)

Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court Abuja on Monday ordered the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) not to take any action aimed at suspending or expelling Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike from the party.

The order was made upon an ex parte motion filed by Wike against the entire hierarchy of the PDP.

Respondents in the motion marked FHC/ABJ/CS/139/2023, dated and filed on February 2, are the PDP, its National Working Committee, National Executive Committee, National Chairman of the party Dr Iyorchia Ayu; PDP National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Matthew McConaughey voices Elvis in new animated series (Today)

After being honored on the big screen in Elvis last year, the celebration of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll continues, this time in animation form.

On Feb. 6, Netflix dropped the teaser for the adult animated action comedy series, “Agent Elvis,” co-created by the late legend’s ex-wife Priscilla Presley and John Eddie. 

The 10-episode series follows Elvis Presley, a crooning icon who also fights crime. The character, voiced by Matthew McConaughey, joins a secret government spy program. Read more 

Chlöe Bailey to star in film adaptation of Bob Dylan-inspired musical ‘‘Girl From The North Country’’ (NME)

Chlöe Bailey will star in an upcoming film adaptation of playwright Conor McPherson’s Girl From The North Country musical, which is based on the songs of Bob Dylan.

As Variety reports, Bailey – one half of R&B duo Chloe x Halle – will lead the cast along with Olivia Colman and Woody Harrelson. McPherson will write and direct the film, which is being produced by Blueprint Pictures. A release date has not yet been set for the film.

The original Girl From The North Country musical premiered in London in 2017. Namerd after Dylan’s 1963 song of the same name, the musical is set during 1934 during the Great Depression, and centres around the owners and travellers at a guesthouse in Duluth, Minnesota, as their lives intersect. In the film adaptation, Bailey will play Marianne, the adopted daughter of proprietor Nick Laine (Harrelson) and his wife Elizabeth (Colman). Read more 

Happy Valley Finale: 7.5m tune in to watch epic end of BBC drama (Standard)

Millions of viewers tuned in to watch the finale of BBC drama Happy Valley, with star James Norton saying it was a “privilege” to work on the show as it came to a dramatic end.

Viewing figures reported on Monday by Broadcast suggest 7.5 million Britons tuned in to watch the gritty finale of the three-series BBC drama starring Sarah Lancashire as Sergeant Catherine Cawood and Norton as villain Tommy Lee Royce.

The ratings, supplied by Barb data from overnights.tv, make Happy Valley the highest rated show of 2023 so far. It means almost 42 per cent of people who were watching television at that time were watching the BBC drama. Read more 

Deadly landslide strikes southern Peru amid heavy rainfall (AlJazeera)

A landslide in southern Peru has left at least eight people dead and five more missing, as torrential rain washes through the region on Monday.

Twenty more people were treated for minor injuries, according to a bureau for Peru’s Ministry of Health in the mountainous town of Secocha, where the landslide took place.

Located on the banks of the Ocoña River in Camaná province, Secocha is among the areas in the department of Arequipa facing high water levels as heavy rain continues to fall. As of Monday morning, the Ocoña was flowing at a rate of 585.6 cubic metres per second, with the Peruvian government warning that the swollen river could affect nearby population centres. Read more

States maintain status quo as Rivers slip to seventh position (Guardian)

After ‘thorough investigation’ of the allegation that some states were awarded more medals than they earned at the 2022 National Sports Festival hosted by Delta State, it has emerged that most of the states actually earned their positions on the final medals table.

Rivers State, however, dropped from sixth to seventh position, according to a source close to the committee set up by the sports ministry to investigate allegations of medals padding at the festival.

At the end of the 21st National Sports Festival, some states raised the alarm that the number of medals awarded to them was more than what their athletes actually won.

This prompted Sports Minister, Sunday Dare, to set up the committee. Read more

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has disclosed that Nigerian players plying their trade in the Turkish league are safe, following a huge earthquake in Turkey.

NFF also expressed sadness over the incident even as it commiserates with Turkey over the loss of lives.

Rose revives winning touch to win Pebble Beach Pro-Am (StraitsTimes)

England’s Justin Rose found the stop-start nature of the Pebble Beach Pro-Am to his liking, returning to the famed Pebble Beach Golf Links for nine holes on Monday to finish off his first tournament victory since 2019.
