As part of its food security drive, especially in rice production, Lagos State Government, yesterday disclosed that its 32 metric tons per hour rice mill, in Imota, Ikorodu, would be ready for commissioning and production in February 2019. Commissioner for Works, Adebowale Akinsanya, disclosed this when the state executive council went on an inspection tour of some state projects. Akinsanya also said the Imota light Industrial Park in the same complex with the Imota Rice Mill, would be ready before December this year. He pointed out that the rice mill, which he described as the biggest in Africa, and the industrial park would have parking facilities for cars and articulated vehicles; administration block; clinic; restaurant; water and sewage treatment plant and a 10 megawatt independent power plant. Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, continued the inspection of Federal Government’s infrastructural projects across the country, with a visit to the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, yesterday. The Minister, who kick-started the tour on Tuesday with a visit to the Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge rail line, inspected the two sections of the expressway: from Lagos to Shagamu Interchange and Shagamu Interchange to Ibadan. While briefing the Minister and his team, Project Engineer of the Reynolds Construction Company (RCC) and contractor handling the Shagamu-Ibadan axis, Mr. Noar Narkisis, disclosed that work had reached 58.27% completion on the axis. Loan scheme beneficiaries laud Lagos government at fair (Guardian)

Beneficiaries of the Lagos State Employments Trust Fund (LSETF) loan scheme programme have commended the state government for supporting the Micro Small and Medium Entrepreneurs (MSMEs). 25 beneficiaries of the LSETF were among the over 100 leading vendors that participated at the 2018 edition of the yearly Simply Nigerian Fair (SNF) to showcase their various products and services. The beneficiaries, who affirmed that the grants had positively affected their businesses, also commended the support from the state government to attend fairs and exhibitions as it helps to encourage and grow their businesses. Lagos upgrades 61 PHCs, Procures N2b Equipment for Hospitals (ThisDay)

The Lagos State Government, within the last one year has upgraded, renovated and constructed at least 61 primary health centres, while equipment worth N2 billion have been procured for health facilities across the state, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. JIde Idris has said. He said the procurement, which include radiologic, laboratory, dental, monitoring and hospital furniture, was part of the state’s drive to provide health workers with the tools needed to dispense their duties adequately. Stating this at the 3rd Governor Akinwunmi Ambode Ministerial Press Briefing in Lagos recently, Jide said the focus of the administration was to continue the upgrading and/or renovation of health facilities at all levels of care, completion of ongoing projects, execution of new ones where necessary, as well as putting preventive maintenance on ground. ‘Emulate Lagos’ indigenous language law’ (Nation)

An educationist and professor of Educational Technology, Lagos State University (LASU) Abiodun Akinpelu, has admonished states across the country to toe the line of Lagos State by ensuring that indigenous language is made compulsory in schools. He said this would be a reawakening towards African cultural renaissance all over the Black continent. Akinpelu delivered a keynote address at the palace of Oba Moses Ayinde Olaleye, the Onilogbo of Ilogbo Eremi on Monday to as part of activities to commemorate his 30th anniversary. In February, Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, signed the Yoruba Language Preservation and Promotion Law which stipulated Yoruba as a requirement for admission into the state’s tertiary institutions. Ikeja Electric assures Ikorodu residents of Improved Supply (Independent)

Ikeja Electric Plc (IE), has assured Ikorodu residents of a boost in electricity supply, with its plans to ensure maximum utilisation of the newly commissioned 2 X 60MVA transmission substation in Odoguyan, Lagos. It said due to this new facility, it will be able to wheel more power to its customers at Odogunyan, Agbede, Odonla, Ogijo, Igbosoro, Ita-Oluwo, Poboyejo, Agodo, Cantonment, Fakale, Ita-Elewa, Odo-Kekere, Agbede, Ogijo, and environs. Speaking at the commissioning ceremony held yesterday, Dr. Anthony Youdeowei, the acting Managing Director/CEO of Ikeja Electric, who was represented by the Chief Technical Coordinator, Engr. Sunday Oyewole, reiterated that the completion of Odogunyan Transmission Station by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) further provides the impetus to meet the demands of industrial, commercial and residential customers in Ikorodu. Corps member aids release of 21 inmates (Nation)

A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Miss Faridah Awa-Ibraheem, has facilitated the release of 21 inmates from the Badagry Prisons in Lagos State through her pet project, FAI Homeless Initiative (FAIHI). The corps member paid the fines and met the bail conditions of the inmates to secure their release. The prisoners were said to have been jailed for minor offences. Last September, Miss Awa-Ibraheem berthed FAIHI with the aim of feeding 300 persons or more every month. The young accountant, who holds a degree and Masters in Accounting and Finance from Birmingham City University in the United Kingdom (UK), had fed street hawkers and other prisoners in the last seven months of her philanthropic gestures. We’ll ensure criminals, those with Tattoos are not Recruited – Police (Independent)

The Nigeria Police Force has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that men and women of questionable characters are not recruited into the police force in the ongoing recruitment exercise which is expected to produce 6,000 police recruits, going on across the six geo-political zones in the country. Emmanuel T. Inyang, Deputy Inspector General of Police in-charge of training, re-echoed this commitment in Lagos on Wednesday when he inspected the on-going  exercise at the Police college, Ikeja. He said that the force is very strict and rigorous in the exercise to ensure that hoodlums such as armed robbers, area boys, drug addicts, cultists and those with questionable mental state among others do not have their ways. Female Lawyer who allegedly killed husband fails to stop his burial in Court (Independent)

A Lagos Magistrate Court sitting in Yaba has overruled the request by Udeme Odidi, the female Lawyer, who allegedly stabbed her husband to death, and sought to stop his burial. Odidi had approached the court to stop the burial of her deceased husband slated for today, Thursday, May 10. She had made the request through her Lawyer, Oluseye Bamijoko, on the ground that the result of the autopsy carried out on the deceased was not made available to them. Odidi, through her lawyer, also argued that the result of psychiatric evaluation carried out on her was not made available to the defence. Read more

Murtala Muhammed College battles Father O’Connel in boys’ final (Guardian)

Murtala Muhammed Collage Yola, Adamawa State, yesterday qualified for the final of the on-going Milo Secondary School Basketball Championship in Lagos. The Yola boys will face Father O’Connel Science College Minna, Niger State, in today’s final at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Lagos. While Murtala Muhammed College, Yola defeated St. Augustine’s Seminary Ezzamgbo, Ebonyi State 46 to 29 in one of the semifinals yesterday, Father O’Connel Science College Minna booked their ticket by beating International School (Unilag), Lagos State, 55 to 42. Earlier yesterday, Wesley Girls Secondary School Sabo, Yaba, Lagos State defeated Government Secondary School, Numan, Adamawa State 46 to 21 in the girl’s Classification match. Read more
