The Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Transportation has expressed worry over the spate of trailer-related accidents in the metropolis.

Chairman of the Committee, Mr Temitope Adewale, expressed the worry in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday in Lagos.

Adewale, representing Ifako-Ijaiye Constituency I in the Lagos Assembly, said the parliament was considering the movement of containers with barges on waterways to Epe, Badagry, and Ikorodu for trailers to pick them up.

According to him, the development will save the state from the accidents trucks and tankers are causing on the roads.

The lawmaker said: “It bothers us when we have accidents involving trucks and tankers in the state, making us lose lives unnecessarily. Read more

NLC to come out with position on petrol, electricity hike soon – Wabba (Guardian)

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), says the organised labour will soon come out with a position on the recent increases in prices of various essential commodities, including fuel and electricity.

Mr Ayuba Wabba, NLC President spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Saturday in reaction to the increases in the prices of petrol and electricity.

NAN reports that the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) announced that the pump price of premium motor spirit (petrol) has been increased to N151, 60 per litre from N145 with effect from Sept 2. Read more

Gana’s Killing: Tiv, Jukun youths trade accusations (Thisday)

Controversy has continued to trail Tuesday’s killing of Benue warlord, Terwase Agwaza a.k.a. Gana by the Army with Tiv and Jukun youths trading blames over the incident.

Gana, who had earlier been declared wanted by the Police and the Nigeria Army and on whose head a ransom of N50 million was placed by the Benue State Government was killed by the Army after intercepting the convoy conveying him and other members of his gang who had earlier in the day surrendered their arms at the Akume Atongo Stadium in Katsina Ala in embrace of amnesty granted them by Governor Samuel Ortom.

Since the news of his killing was made public by the Army, there have been mixed reactions from different segments of the public particularly from Tiv political and traditional leaders and their Jukun neighbours. Read more

We have made progress in fight against COVID-19 – Delta Govt (Vanguard)

Delta State Government said it has made reasonable progress in the fight against the ravaging coronavirus, announcing the reopening of cinemas, film Houses, eateries and hotel restaurants in the State.

The State Commissioner for Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu who stated this during a press conference in Asaba, however, said cinemas and other hotel restaurants should operate at 50 per cent of their capacity and ensure the observation of all COVID-19 preventive protocols issued by the NCDC.

Noting that the state government would continue to monitor the operations of these cinemas and film houses to ensure compliance with the COVID-19 preventive measures, Aniagwu said restaurants in hotels could now operate but without buffet. Read more

Bayelsa condemns violence against women, children (Nation)

Bayelsa State Government has urged the relevant stakeholders to join hands with the administration to curb the menace of violence against women, children and the vulnerable.

Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, Ayiba Duba, made the call when he received members of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Bayelsa State Branch, in his office, Yenagoa.

Duba stated that women, children and the vulnerable had become easy targets for people to prey on, noting that because of their vulnerable disposition, they are physically, sexually and mentally abused as well as exploited. Read more

The Northern Elders’ Forum (NEF), Middle Belt Forum, Ohaneze Ndigbo, Afenifere and Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), have resolved to work together with the aim of pulling Nigeria from the brink.

They have also expressed their commitment to support and involve themselves in all activities targeted at improving the Nigerian constitution for the purpose of meeting the yearnings and aspirations of all Nigerian citizens.

The socio-cultural organisations stated this in a communique issued Saturday by the Convener, Amb. Ahmed Magaji, after its consultative dialogue on the state of the nation and critical challenges facing Nigeria, held on 9th and 10th September in Abuja. Read more

Alleged witchcraft: Man in police net for killing 60 year old aunty (Vanguard)

Operatives of the Ogun State command of the Nigeria Police have arrested a 23 year old man, Dansu Asogba for allegedly killing his 60 years old aunty, Iyabo Dansu on the 22nd of August 2020.

The suspect, according to a statement by the State command spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi, was arrested following a report by two children of the deceased who reported at Ipokia Divisional headquarters.

The children said, “they received an information on the 22nd of August, 2020 about the demise of their mother who was not known to be suffering from any illness”.

They stated further that since they were not suspecting any foul play, they decided to burry her without necessarily reporting to the police. Read more

Edo governorship election: Police, Navy, DSS embark on combined ‘Show of Force’ (Guardian)

Security agencies in Edo on Saturday embarked on a combined exercise tagged “Inter Agencies Show of Force” to alert residents of the state of the agencies’ preparedness for the Sept. 19 governorship election.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that security agencies that participated in the exercise included the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Police Force, and the Directorate of State Services.

Others were the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Nigerian Air force), Federal Road Safety Corps, the Nigerian Correctional Service, Nigerian Immigration Service and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency. Read more

Toots Hibbert: Jamaican reggae legend dies aged 77 (BBC)

Jamaican reggae pioneer Frederick Nathaniel “Toots” Hibbert has died at the age of 77.

The legendary musician fronted the reggae and ska band Toots & the Maytals from the early 1960s.

Hibbert “passed away peacefully” in Kingston, Jamaica surrounded by his family, the group announced on Friday.

As yet it is unknown how Hibbert died, although he had been tested for coronavirus in the last two weeks and was put into intensive care.

Hibbert is credited with popularising reggae music and even naming the genre – his 1968 single “Do the Reggay” is the first song to use the term. Read more

Woman cut off her own hand for insurance payout (news.com.au)

A court in Slovenia on Friday sentenced a 22-year-old woman to two years in prison for deliberately cutting off her hand with a circular saw to make a fraudulent insurance claim.

The district court in Ljubljana said Julija Adlesic agreed with her boyfriend to have her left hand severed above the wrist at their home in the capital early in 2019.

She was found guilty of attempted insurance fraud.

About a year earlier, she signed contracts with five different insurance companies, the court said. The woman stood to collect more than one million euros, about half paid immediately and the rest in regular monthly instalments. Read more

Navid Afkari: Iran executes young wrestler despite global outcry (BBC)

Iran has executed a wrestler accused of murder, state media report, defying international appeals for him to be spared.

Navid Afkari, 27, was sentenced to death over the murder of a security guard during a wave of anti-government protests in 2018.

He said he had been tortured into making a confession.

A union representing 85,000 athletes worldwide was among those to call for a stay of execution. Read more

US wildfires cause at least 24 deaths, as 500,000 in Oregon told to evacuate (RNZ)

Around 500,000 people in Oregon, or 10 per cent of the state’s population, were ordered to evacuate on Friday and residents of its largest city, Portland, were told to be ready to go as extreme wind-driven wildfires scorched US West Coast states, causing at least 24 deaths.

About 100 wildfires have burned an area nearly as large as the state of New Jersey across the US West, creating smoke that gave California, Oregon and Washington state the worst air quality levels in the world.

Oregon bore the brunt of the destruction, with search teams still unable to enter areas where fires burned through multiple small communities in the Cascade mountains. Read more

Coronavirus: Pause in Oxford COVID-19 vaccine trial shows it’s no ‘rush job’ – virologist (Newshub.)

A pause in the late stage trial of a COVID-19 vaccine shows that proper processes are being followed and that it is not a “rush job”, clinical virologist Dr Chris Smith says.

The Oxford University AstraZeneca trial was paused earlier this week after a person who received the vaccine in the UK was hospitalised with neurological complications.

The Oxford vaccine is now in phase three trials, which means big trials on large groups of people.

There is also a control group of other people who have had a vaccine but they do not know which one – the control group has in fact had a meningitis vaccine, Dr Smith said.

He said the trial was going well, but unfortunately a few days ago the news came out that it had been halted because one of the recipients developed a case of transverse myelitis, which is an inflammatory condition of the spinal cord which causes sensory and motor deficits. Read more

Hamilton beats Bottas to Tuscan GP pole (BBC)

Lewis Hamilton took his seventh pole position in nine races this season at the first Tuscan Grand Prix.

The world champion beat Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas by just 0.059 seconds on Formula 1’s first competitive experience of the spectacular Mugello circuit.

Red Bull locked out the second row, Max Verstappen ahead of Alex Albon.

And Charles Leclerc gave Ferrari something to celebrate at their 1,000th grand prix with fifth place.

Bottas had topped all three practice sessions and Hamilton looked to be on the back foot heading into qualifying.

Michael Schumacher is fighting back – Jean Todt (news.com.au)

Former Ferrari boss Jean Todt has revealed he visited Michael Schumacher last week and says the seven-time F1 champion is fighting to overcome the devastating injuries he suffered in a skiing accident in 2013.

Todt, who oversaw five of Schumacher’s drivers championships at Ferrari, is among just a handful of people who have access to the 51-year-old at his Lake Geneva home.

Schumacher’s condition has been a closely-guarded secret as his family remains determined to respect his privacy.

Maguire to stay as Man Utd captain despite court case (Guardian)

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed Harry Maguire will remain Manchester United’s captain this season despite his involvement in a Greek court case.

Maguire was given a suspended 21-month sentence last month after the England defender was found guilty of assaulting a police officer, swearing, resisting arrest and bribery during an incident in Mykonos.

The 27-year-old has denied the offences and has launched an appeal which nullifies the verdict and means he has no criminal record ahead of a full retrial. Read more

Spurs Women sign USA forward Morgan (BBC)

Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of United States forward and women’s football icon Alex Morgan, subject to her obtaining a visa.

The 31-year-old has helped the USA win back-to-back World Cups, scoring six goals in 2019’s tournament in France.

Morgan, who gave birth to her daughter on 7 May, has scored 107 goals in 169 international appearances for the USA.

She becomes the fifth member of the world champions’ squad to sign for a WSL club this summer. Read more

Save Heartland FC from extinction, Gov. Uzodinma told (Vanguard)

Imo Chapter of the Sports Writers Association (SWAN) has appealed to Gov. Hope Uzodinma to urgently resolve the internal leadership crisis in Heartland FC of Owerri to save the club from extinction.

The association made the appeal on Saturday in a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Everest Ezihe and Secretary, Tunde Liadi in Owerri.

SWAN  urged the Uzodinma-led government to ensure that salaries and allowances owed the players as a result of the crisis were immediately paid them. Read more
