Lagos police arrest car snatcher, recover vehicles (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a car snatcher in the Ojodu-Berger area of the state and recovered two vehicles in his possession.

The 36-year-old suspect, Dayo Jimoh, was said to have hijacked two vehicles at gunpoint last Saturday along with two others who are currently at large.

The police made this known in a statement, on Tuesday, signed by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin.

Hundeyin added that efforts are being made to arrest the fleeing suspects. Read more 

Naira Scarcity: Banks in Ibadan dispense old naira notes to customers (Tribune) 

Following the directive of the Central Bank of Nigeria, commercial banks in different parts of Ibadan now give out and accept old naira notes from customers.

On a visit to commercial banks including, FirstBank, UBA, Access Bank, Union Bank, FCMB, Ecobank, Sterling Bank, Polaris Bank, Stanbic Bank and GTBank, the banks were all paying out old naira notes to customers.

Though there are still large crowds at banks, many commercial banks were seen paying out old naira notes to customers except Fidelity Bank, which claims it couldn’t pay out money because old naira notes are no longer available in the bank. Read more

The prestigious award event  was held at the Dolby Centre, Los Angeles, on Sunday and was attended by Hollywood’s finest who stunned in different fashion pieces.

The National Security Adviser (NSA) Babagana Monguno has warned those planning to cause troubles before, during and after Saturday’s Governorship and Assembly elections to perish the thought.

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Prof Mahmood Yakubu also asked parties and political stakeholders to warn their supporters against any act of violence as an election is simply a contest and not a war. 

Monguno and Yakubu spoke at a meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security at the Commission’s headquarters on Tuesday. Read more 

Nigerian Army commences 2023 recruitment exercise (Vanguard)

The Nigerian Army has announced commencement of its 2023 recruitment exercise.

The organisation in a tweet via its official Twitter handle, @HQNigerianArmy on Tuesday, March 14 said portal for the recruitment has been opened since Monday, 13 March and it is free.

The Army said the recruitment is for 85 Regular Recruits Intake for Non-Tradesmen & women has commenced.

Cash Crunch: Nigerian Breweries worst hit in 15 years (Leadership)

Nigerian Breweries Plc has revealed that its business has been heavily impacted by the current cash crunch in the country.

In December, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) replaced old N200, N500 and N1,000 notes with news ones, triggering Naira scarcity that has worsened in recent weeks.

In an interview with Bloomberg, the chief executive officer of Nigerian Breweries, Mr. Hans Essaadi, said the company has faced a tough challenge as Nigerian Breweries Plc depends on cash for about 80 per cent of its retail sales. Read more 

Gunmen abduct Accord candidate for Rivers Assembly (Guardian)

The Accord candidate for the Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Constituency 2 in the Rivers State House of Assembly Chukwudi Ogbonna has been abducted by gunmen.

Cousin to Ogbonna, Ifeaka Nwaka, confirmed the incident to journalists on Tuesday morning.

“They took him away with his Mercedes car. We have reported the matter at the Kala Police station,” Nwaka said. Read more

Court jails Yobe Auditor General for fraud (Channels)

A High Court sitting in Yobe has sentenced the state’s Auditor-General, Idris Yahaya, to five years in prison over N19,900,000 fraud.

Yahaya was found guilty on a one-count charge of criminal misappropriation.

On November 9, 2022, the auditor general was arraigned but he pleaded not guilty to the charge

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), in a statement on Monday, said the Auditor General received funds for the purchase of an official vehicle, a Toyota Corolla model 2015, and diverted part of the money to his personal use. Read more

Owning vinyl is all the rage these days. 2022 became the first year since the 1980s that vinyl outsold CDs, and the global resuscitation of vinyl as the preferred medium of music is now reaching its apex. For the first time in decades, artists are beginning to see actual profits from selling their albums on wax, so much so that the demand is starting to encroach on the supply.

In the world of music, Jack White practically stands alone as an artist who has cut out the middleman. Through his record label, Third Man Records, White has been able to purchase and oversee one of the biggest independent vinyl record production plants in America. Third Man’s Detroit location opened in 2017, making it the first vinyl record plant to open in the city since 1965. If you’re buying a reprint of The White Stripes’ catalogue or purchasing a new record from The Raconteurs, you can bet that White personally oversaw its production.

Now, White has some competition courtesy of heavy metal gods Metallica. According to Billboard, the legendary metal band sold nearly a million vinyl records last year: 902,500 discs spread across 620,000 packages, about half of which sold in the US. Read more 

German Police: 2 children in custody over girl’s killing (ABC)

German police said Tuesday that two children are in custody suspected of killing a 12-year-old girl found dead earlier this week in the western town of Freudenberg, in a case that has shocked the country.

The girl, who was only identified by her first name Louise due to privacy reasons, went missing Saturday after visiting a friend. She was found stabbed to death on Sunday in a forest near a former railroad station, after a massive police search.

Prosecutor Mario Mannweiler told reporters that “we must assume that the crime was committed by two children from the (victim’s) circle of acquaintances.” Read more 

Investor who called Lehman collapse predicts the next big US bank failure (NYPost)

The Wall Street analyst and investor who called the 2008 Lehman Brothers’ collapse has revealed what bank he thinks will hit insolvency next amid Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) closure shockwaves.

“The problem is the bond market, and my prediction, I called Lehman Brothers years ago, and I think the next bank to go is Credit Suisse,” the Rich Dad Company co-founder Robert Kiyosaki said on “Cavuto: Coast to Coast” Monday, “because the bond market is crashing.”

Just days after SVB, the California-based bank primarily used by tech industry companies and startups, declared bankruptcy, New York-based Signature Bank announced it would be shutting down to protect consumers and the financial system. Read more

Ukraine and Russia have reported inflicting heavy losses as the battle for Bakhmut rages on.

Moscow has been trying to take the eastern Ukrainian city for months in a grinding war of attrition.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russian forces had suffered more than 1,100 deaths in the past few days, with many more seriously injured.

Russia said it had killed more than 220 Ukrainian service members over the past 24 hours. Read more 

Avenged Sevenfold announce new album “Life Is But a Dream</i”, their first release in years (AltPress)

[Metalcore favourites Avenged Sevenfold are back with their first release since 2016.

The iconic heavy band return with “Nobody,” the first single off their upcoming album, Life Is But a Dream, which they also just announced today. Their eighth studio album, which follows up 2016’s The Stage, is confirmed to arrive June 2 (via Warner Records).

Their latest single is what fans have grown to love about the longtime group, as it’s full of dark intensity and sprawls over six minutes, full of thrilling riffs. According to a press release, it encompasses the sound of the upcoming album, which is said to be “inspired by Albert Camus’ philosophical opus The Stranger” with lyrics “rooted in existentialism and absurdism.”

In addition to announcing Life Is But a Dream, Avenged Sevenfold shared they’ll be taking the album live with two special shows this summer, one in Los Angeles at the Kia Forum June 9 and one at in New York City at Madison Square Garden June 23. China to reopen its borders, resume all visas for tourists (FOX)

China has announced it will resume all visa travel, officially reopening its borders to tourists for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic started three years ago.

Health officials in Beijing and at the World Health Organization called for and implemented travel restrictions during the pandemic to help combat the infection’s spread.

Now, China is looking to resume tourism to boost its economy.

“China will continue to make better arrangements for the safe, healthy and orderly movement of Chinese and foreign personnel on the basis of scientific assessments and in light of the situation,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin told reporters. Read more

Ahead of the Asaph Zadok National Scrabble Championship scheduled to be held in Abuja from the 20th to 22nd of this month, the Delta State Scrabble Association (DSSA) has named a strong six-man squad.

The head coach of DSSA, Dennis Ikekeregor, who made this known to the public, said that the state’s team is prepared for the championship.

Terem Moffi has been recognised for his outstanding performance in the last round of matches in the French Ligue 1, with football statistics website Whoscored picking the Lorient loanee in its Team of the Week.

Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has discussed Tottenham forward Richarlison for the first time since the pair sparked an on-pitch brawl back in January.

The Gunners shot-stopper was celebrating his side’s 2-0 victory just as the full-time whistle had been blown during the most recent North London derby. Richarlison clearly took issue with something he saw and confronted Ramsdale, appearing to slap him in the face and in turn causing a melee between both sets of players.

Things boiled over to such a degree that Ramsdale was actually kicked in the back by a Spurs fan who had made his way from his seat to the edge of the advertising hoarding to boot the England international. This only made things worse, though Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta eventually managed to get hold of his players and guide them to the away end. Read more
