Lagos police arrest ‘most wanted’ cult killer, suspected armed robbers (Guardian)

Operatives of Lagos State Police Command have arrested the ‘most wanted’ alleged serial cultist killer, Segun Agodo, at Odonguyan outskirts of Ikorodu.

According to the spokesman of the command, Muyiwa Adejobi, police detectives attached to Sagamu Road Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer, Sagamu Road, Ikorodu, apprehended the suspect.

Segun, a senior member of a notorious cult group, had been on the run for a while since he got the wind that he had been declared wanted by the police for his alleged atrocities in Ikorodu area of Lagos State.

“But he was sighted in Ikorodu today, April 4, 2021, while the DPO Sagamu Road Division and his operatives were on surveillance patrol around Ikorodu. Read more

Snakes, alligators have taken over Ikorodu government warehouse, terminal, freight forwarders raise alarm (Tribune)

The National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) has raised the alarm that due to many decomposing overtime cargoes littering the Ikorodu terminal/government warehouse, snakes, alligators and other reptiles have taken over the terminal, thereby posing a threat to the continuous operation of the facility.

In a statement signed at the weekend by the Spokesman of NAGAFF, Mr. Ezenga Stanley, the group called on the board of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to urgently restore the terminal/government warehouse to its original masterplan, to meet the aspirations and yearnings of industry stakeholders and Nigerians in general.

According to the statement titled: State of Ikorodu Terminal/Government Warehouse And Cargo Clearance Out Of Customs Control, NAGAFF stated that, “We are worried by the raging threat to the operations of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) at the Ikorodu Terminal/ Government Warehouse, and we wish to use this medium to call on the board of the NCS to urgently restore the Terminal/ Government Warehouse to its original masterplan, to meet the aspirations and yearnings of industry stakeholders and Nigerians in general. FRSC, safety experts, laud NIWA’s plan to barge containers from Lagos to Onitsha port (Sun)

The plan by the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to improve water transportation, especially movement of containers by barges from Lagos to Onitsha, has been commended by the Federal Road Safety Corps {FRSC}, road safety experts and businessmen in the eastern part of the country.

The Managing Director, Dr. George Moghalu, had at a press conference on Tuesday in Abuja disclosed that NIWA was accelerating action on the construction of new river ports, completion of work on world class jetties and the commencement of barging of containers from Lagos ports to Onitsha River Port and other places.

One of the envisaged results, the NIWA Managing Director disclosed, would be that if about 50,000 containers that would have been trucked from the Lagos ports to their destinations by road are moved by barges, it means “we have removed 100,000 trailers from the roads.” Read more

More than 130 choice assets have been bought with looted funds in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), by some ex-governors, ministers and senators.

These assets are among the over 800 traceable to Nigerians in the UAE, including top security and military officers.

Four areas have been identified through which the nation’s resources are looted.

These are Bribery and corruption, proceeds from commercial tax evasions, illicit activities engaged in by corporations and business ventures and proceeds derived from criminal activities. Read more

2 kids burnt to death as fire guts flat in Suleja (DailyTrust)

Two children, identified as Suraiya, 7, and Habib, 9, were burnt to death after a mysterious fire burnt down a flat at Anguwar Dawaki in Suleja, Niger state.

Daily Trust learnt that the father of the two kids, Alhassan Jibirin Yanji, who sustained various degrees of burns in attempt to rescue his two kids was still receiving treatment at a hospital in Suleja.

A resident,  Bashir Ibrahim, said the incident happened in the early hours of Friday, at about 3am when fire gutted the flat in which the victims were living.

He said the two children were sleeping in their room, while their father was sleeping in his bedroom, when he woke up to discover that the entire house was filled with thick smoke. Read more

Immigration to issue passports in 774 LGAs (ThisDay)

The Minister of Interior, Mr Rauf Aregbesola, has disclosed that applicants would soon begin to get Nigerian passports within 24 hours.

In a statement issued yesterday, the minister said passports would be issued in each of the 774 local government areas in the country to reduce the problem of getting it.

Aregbesola stated this at the newly inaugurated Maitama Passport Express Centre.

He explained that the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) Passport Express Centre, Maitama Abuja was established in partnership with the private sector to make passport Issuance more convenient and quick. Read more

Bloody Easter: Bandits kill 5 in Kaduna (Sun)

No fewer than five persons were killed by bandits yesterday, just as two others were injured in Chikun and Jema’a Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Kaduna State.

Report said a decomposing body was discovered in Zangon Kataf LGA of the State, but was buried immediately.

This was contained in a statement, yesterday, by the Commissioner for Internal security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan.

The report read: “Security agencies have reported that armed bandits attacked Katarma village in Chikun Local Government Area. According to the report, five persons were killed in the attack. One person was injured, and is receiving treatment in a neighbouring state.

“In another incident, troops  of Operation Safe Haven reported a clash between some youths in Atuku village, Jema’a LGA. Read more

Three famous classical musicians, the Gundechas, have been accused of sexual harassment

She alleges that she was raped by the late Ramakant Gundecha, a famous classical Indian musician, while she was a student at his school, Dhrupad Sansthan, in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

Gundecha died in November 2019 but he and his brothers, Umakant and Akhilesh, have since been accused of sexual harassment and assault by female students of the music school. Over the course of a three-month investigation, the BBC has heard multiple allegations against all three Gundechas brothers. Umakant and Akhilesh deny the allegations. Read more

Flash floods in Indonesia and Timor Leste kill more than 50 (BBC)

At least 50 people have died after flash flooding and landslides hit Indonesia and Timor Leste on Sunday.

Torrential rain sparked widespread destruction, with flood water from overflowing dams submerging thousands of homes on the islands.

The affected area stretched from Flores island in eastern Indonesia to the neighbouring nation of Timor Leste.

Kenya’s Ruth Chepngetich smashed the women’s half marathon world record on Sunday in a time of one hour four minutes and two seconds in Istanbul.

The marathon world champion sliced almost half a minute off the previous best mark of 1hr 4:31 set by Ethiopia’s Ababel Yeshaneh in February 2020 in the United Arab Emirates.

Chepngetich, 26, was followed across the line in Turkey by Ethiopian Yalemzerf Yehualaw (1hr 4:40) with Kenya’s Hellen Obiri third in 1hr 4:51.

Winning the race for a third time after 2017 and 2019 she pulled clear of Yehualaw in the final stages to seal her place in the record books. Read more

Mason Greenwood should not be judged purely on his goal scoring, Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said after the teenager’s effort completed a comeback victory over Brighton.

It took 29 years, but VanDerveer and the Cardinal are NCAA women’s basketball champions again.

Haley Jones scored 17 points and Stanford beat Arizona 54-53, giving the Cardinal and their Hall of Fame coach their first national championship in 29 years on Sunday night.

“Getting through all the things we got through, we’re excited to win the COVID championship,” VanDerveer said. ”The other one was not quite as close, the last one. But we’re really excited. Tottenham said they are “disgusted” after defender Davinson Sanchez was subjected to racist abuse on social media following Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Newcastle.

The Colombian, 24, posted a picture of the abusive messages on his Instagram Stories after the match, with the words “Nothing changes”.

Spurs said they want “social media platforms to take action”.
