Lagos police command returns N705,000 to owner (Vanguard)
A Civil Society Organisation, The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC), has commended the Lagos State Police Command for returning the sum of N705,000 extorted from one Kareem Jamiu, by five policemen,
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the commendation was made in a statement issued and signed on Saturday in Lagos by the Executive Director of the group, Mr Okechukwu Nwanguma.
According to Nwanguma, Jamiu was invited on Friday by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Bala Elkana, and handed the N705,000 extorted from him by the five officers back to him. Read more
We’ll deliver Lagos-Ibadan standard rail line by April –Amaechi (Punch)
The Minister of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, on Saturday assured Nigerians that the Federal Government would completely deliver the Lagos-Ibadan standard guage rail line latest by April 2020.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Amaechi gave this assurance while speaking to journalists at the end of the project inspection tour on-board the train from Iju (Lagos State) to Ibadan (Oyo State).
The minister, who noted that the Lagos axis of the project had been challenging due to urbanisation, said that the contractor had made significant improvement in the construction of stations. Read more
Sanwo-Olu sues for peaceful co-existence among residents (Nation)
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has charged leaders of religious bodies in the country, particularly Lagos, to remain peaceful and tolerant of one another despite religious and tribal differences.
Sanwo-Olu gave the charge in his address to mark the “Year 2019 International Day for Tolerance,” with the theme: “Enhancing Harmonious Relationship and Peace among religious bodies for better socio-economic development in the state,” which was held in Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos.
The governor said the call became necessary in view of the era of rising and violent extremism and widening conflicts that are characterised by a fundamental disregard for human life. Read more

Border closure: N1.45trn goods smuggled into Nigeria yearly –NEPZA (NewTelegraph)
The Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA) has expressed its full support for the partial closure of Nigeria’s land borders, saying a recent World Bank report indicate that over N1.45 trillion worth of goods are smuggled into Nigeria annually across her borders with Benin alone.
He also praised President Muhammadu Buhari for realizing the importance of NPZA in national industrialisation by raising annual allocation to it to a N2 billion over the years to N50 billion.
The Acting Managing Director of NEPZA, Engr. David Terhemba Nongo who made this disclosure at the recent the National Workshop on the Role of Maritime in the AfCFTA in Lagos, said that President Buhari’s special attention on NEPZA has made it possible for agency to raise the bar of its operation in recent times. Governor Gboyega Oyetola of Osun State Osun State Governor, Gboyega Oyetola has sympathised with the Fulani herdsmen whose cows were killed by lightning at Iba community. The Governor sent a delegation to the community to console the owners of the cows. Adichie becomes first Nigerian to win UN Foundation’s Global Leadership Award (Nation)

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan Prof Ebel Idowu Olayinka has lamented the poor funding of Nigerian Universities insisting that it is the bane of scientific research in education sector.
Speaking at the second international conference of the Faculty of Physical Sciences of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Uli in Anambra state , Olayinka noted that inadequate funding for research has greatly affected academic research hence deepening sustainable development in Nigeria.
He further explained that should government inject more funds in the area of research for sustainable development and give instructions some form of autonomy most research findings would be developed by the manufacturing sector and business community would leaverage on it to improve the country’s economy. US court issues arrest warrant for Onyema (Guardian)
A United States court has issued a warrant of arrest against Air Peace boss Allen Onyema
The United States Department of Justice said on Friday that Onyema has been for alleged bank fraud and money laundering. Another person – Ejiroghene Eghagha, who is Air Peace’s international airline’s Chief of Administration and Finance – was also accused of aggravated identity theft.
Lawyers to both Air Peace chiefs said they were innocent of the allegations. A copy of the arrest warrant published by Premium Times showed that the warrant was issued on November 20. Read more
Colombia protests: Troops stay on streets as unrest continues (BBC)
Colombia’s President Iván Duque has said security forces will remain on the streets to maintain order, as protests continued for a third day.
The anti-government demonstrations erupted on Thursday, when more than 250,000 marched in a national strike.
They started peacefully but clashes between protesters and police have since broken out, and there have been reports of vandalism and looting. Read more
Man found in Dallas apartment ‘died three years ago’ (BBC)
A US Navy veteran whose body was found inside his apartment in Dallas, Texas, is believed to have lain dead there for three years.
Ronald Wayne White’s family said they had reported his absence to the authorities on numerous occasions.
His body was discovered during an investigation of apartment units whose tenants had not been using water in the DeSoto area complex.

Eliud Kipchoge and Dalilah Muhammad have been named World Athletics’ male and female athletes of the year.
Kenya’s Kipchoge, 35, won the London Marathon for a fourth time in April before becoming the first athlete to run a marathon in under two hours.
