The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the receipt of the petition by Nigerian singer and songwriter, Tiwa Savage, over alleged bullying and threats to her life by Grammy nominee, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, while responding to an inquiry by PUNCH Metro on Tuesday, said investigation had begun into the allegations.

He said, “I can confirm to you that we have received the petition and an investigation has commenced.” Read more 

UNILAG to graduate 379 first class students at 54th convocation (Nation)

The University of Lagos says a total of 340 students will be graduating with first class at its 54th convocation scheduled for Jan. 17.

The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, disclosed this at a news conference to announce activities lined up for the ceremony on Wednesday, in Lagos.

According to her, the 340 are among the overall 17,464 students that will graduate during the period. 

She noted that David Akanmu, from the Faculty of Engineering, had emerged the overall best graduating student, with a perfect score of 5.00 CGPA. Read more

Court remands ex-minister Agunloye in Kuje prison over $6b Mambila deal (Vanguard)

The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of the former Minister of Power and Steel, Olu Agunloye, in Kuje prison.

He was remanded at the Kuje Correctional Center by trial Justice Donatus Okorowo, after he was docked before the court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, over his alleged complicity in fraud.

The defendant, who had also served as a Minister of State for Defence, pleaded not guilty to the charge. Read more

The Federal Government on Tuesday assured motorists and users of Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos of seamless travels as the popular bridge and the longest in Nigeria was partially shut down.

The shutdown which would last seven weeks starting from Tuesday was aimed at carrying out comprehensive rehabilitation of the bridge on the Iyana Oworonshoki-Adeniji Adele section of the bridge.

A yet-to-be-identified woman stole a new-born baby boy at the postnatal ward of Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital, Lafia on Tuesday.

Mother of the one-day-old baby, Mrs Wosilat Suleiman, told newsmen that she was delivered of the baby early on Tuesday through Caesarean Section.

Prominent Oyo Islamic cleric, Alaga, dies at 80 (Punch)

Sheikh Abdulfatai Muhali Alaga, renowned as the Grand Mufti of Ibadan and also known as Alfa Agba of Ibadanland, is dead.

Alaga, 80, succumbed to a brief illness and his remains were buried at 4 pm on Tuesday.

Black man who spent 44 years in prison before he was exonerated gets record $25M settlement (NBC)

A Black North Carolina man who spent 44 years in prison after he was wrongfully convicted of raping a prominent white woman has been awarded a historic $25 million settlement more than three years after he was exonerated.

Ronnie Long, 68, settled his civil lawsuit with the city of Concord, about 25 miles northeast of Charlotte, for $22 million, the city said in a news release Tuesday. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation had previously settled for $3 million, according to Duke Law School’s Wrongful Convictions Clinic.

The clinic, which represented Long, said the settlement is the second largest wrongful conviction settlement recorded. Read more

5 countries support South Africa’s genocide case against Israel (AfricaNews)

The International Court of Justice is scheduled to commence the hearing of the case in which South Africa accuses Israel of committing genocide in Gaza starting this Thursday.

Currently, five countries, among which the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, along with Jordan, Turkey, and Malaysia, have openly expressed their support for the case, while only Israel and the United States have opposed it.

South Africa filed a complaint at the end of December, alleging that Israel committed genocide during the Gaza conflict. The complaint advocates for an end to the severe military campaign, which has resulted in the deaths of over 23,000 Palestinians, including nearly 10,000 children. Read more
