The police in Lagos State have warned against any rally billed for this Saturday at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojota.

The state commissioner of police, Hakeem Odumosu gave the warning on Thursday during a press conference at the state command headquarters in Ikeja. Top Yoruba nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho had earlier insisted that nothing could stop the Lagos Mega rally on Saturday, July 3, 2021.

The Lagos police boss said, “The attention of the Lagos State Police Command has been drawn to the news making rounds and a press statement signed  by one Olayomi Koiki dated 30th June, 2021, that some individuals have concluded plans to stage a mega rally, in continuation of the secessionist agenda for Oodua Republic on 3rd July 2021, at Gani Fawehimi Freedom Park, Ojota,  Lagos State.

“The Lagos State Police Command hereby warns that no rally will be allowed, under whatever guise, in any part of the state.” Read more

Lagos Yoruba Nation Rally Showdown: It must hold, says Akintoye as Lagos bans rally (Vanguard)

Despite the attack on Sunday Igboho’s residence with less than 72 hours to the proposed rally in Lagos, Professor Banji Akinyoe has declared no going back on the planned demonstration.

Akintoye, who is the leader of the umbrella body of Yoruba self-determination groups, Ilana Omo Oodua, IOO, emphasised that the rally will continue as scheduled.

In a statement by his Communications Manager, Mr Maxwell Adeleye, Akintoye said: “I call on our people at home and in the Diaspora to immediately begin mass protests in front of palaces in Yorubaland, and opposite the offices of the United Nations, European Union, British, French and the United States governments.

“We want to confirm again that the Pro-Yoruba Nation rally scheduled to hold on Saturday July 3, in Lagos will proceed as scheduled.” Read more

Military arrests ISWAP terrorist in Ogun on way to Lagos (Punch)

The Nigerian Army has arrested a member of the Islamic State in West Africa Province in Ogun State.

The terrorist identified as Mr. Ibrahim Musa was arrested at No. 31 Abartura Street in Sango-Ota, Ogun State.

The ISWAP member was on a mission to Lagos to acquire certain items for his group’s operations in Maiduguri, Borno State.

This is according to a statement issued on Thursday and signed by the Acting Director, Defence Media Operation, Brigadier General Benard Onyeuko. Read more

Reps adopt Petroleum Industry Bill for 3rd reading (Guardian)

The House of Representatives on Thursday adopted the report on the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) for passage at the Committee of the Whole.

The Executive bill, which sought to reform the oil and gas sector and ensure its governance met with best global standards, was presented by the Chairman of House Committee on PIB, Rep. Mohammed Monguno (APC-Borno).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that following the adoption of the report, the bill will now be scheduled for third reading and final passage by the House.

Presenting the report, Monguno said that the PIB had suffered lots of setbacks in the parliament since its introduction in 2000.

He said that the bill sought to address the very core aspect of the nation’s economy which largely depended on the oil and gas sector. Read more

Senate passes Petroleum Industry Bill, approves 3% for host communities (Punch)

The Senate on Thursday passed the Petroleum Industry Bill and approved 3 per cent for the host communities

The upper chamber passed the PIB, 2021 after the clause by clause consideration of the report of its joint committee on Petroleum (Upstream, Downstream and Gas) on PIB.

Although the Senate approved three per cent for the host communities despite protests from the South-South lawmakers, who advocated 5 per cent.

The Senate had before then, held a closed session with the Minister of State for Petroleum, Timipre Sylva and the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Mele Kyari.

Senate President Ahmad Lawan congratulated the lawmakers and said the Ninth National Assembly has achieved one of its fundamental legislative agenda. Read more

Court fixes July 28 for ruling in El-Zakzaky’s no-case-submission (Vanguard)

A Kaduna High Court on Thursday, fixed July 28 for ruling in the No-case-submission filed by the leader of the proscribed Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), Ibrahim Zakzaky and his wife Zeenat.

Justice Gideon Kurada fixed the date after the prosecution and counsel to the defendants, addressed the court on the no-case submission prayer.

Mr Femi Falana, SAN, and lead counsel to El-Zakzaky, who spoke to reporters shortly after the adjournment, prayed the Court to rule in favour of his clients.

Nigeria ready for health emergency – Mamora (Guardian)

The Federal Government has restated its commitment to invest in health security to enhance the country’s preparedness against future pandemics.

Dr Olorunnimbe Mamora, Minister of State for Health, gave the assurance on Thursday during a webinar organised by The Conversation Africa.

The webinar was themed: ‘Nigeria and the next pandemic: Preparedness, Response, and Vaccine.’

Mamora said that the government had started to implement steps through the Basic Health Care Provision Fund where the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control would be provided with 2.5 per cent of the fund for health emergencies. Read more

US comedian Bill Cosby’s release from prison after his sexual assault conviction was overturned has led to an outpouring of anger and shock.

A US judge has denied Britney Spears’s request to remove her father from his role overseeing her conservatorship.

The pop star’s lawyer asked an LA court to end Jamie Spears control of her estate, in November last year.

They said the star was “afraid of her father” and wanted him removed as her sole conservator – a role he has carried out since 2008.

Tokyo 2020 organisers say “nursing children” can accompany Olympic athletes to Tokyo “when necessary”.

It comes after Canadian basketball star Kim Gaucher, who has a three-month-old daughter, said she was being forced to choose between “being a breastfeeding mum or an Olympic athlete”.

Ofoborh completes Glasgow Rangers move (Punch) 

Former Flying Eagles midfielder, Nnamdi Ofoborh, has completed his move to Scottish champions, Glasgow Rangers, from AFC Bournemouth, The PUNCH reports.

The 21-year-old signed a four-year pre-contract with the Gers in February, after rejecting a contract extension with the Cherries, where he made just five senior appearances.
