The Lagos State Government on Monday reopened the Ojota and Maryland sections of the Odo Iya-Alaro Bridge and declared a zero-tolerance policy for vandalism and theft of public infrastructure in the state.

The state’s Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, made this statement during the official reopening of the newly rehabilitated bridge, while lamenting the frequent theft of manhole covers in the state.

To combat this issue, Hamzat announced that the state had switched to using fibre materials to fabricate manhole covers instead of steel, emphasising that anyone caught stealing them would be prosecuted. Read more 

15 children die in Kaduna car accident (Channels)

No fewer than 15 people have perished in a road accident that occurred in Saminaka Lere Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The accident which occurred around 1pm on Sunday involved mostly children who were travelling to celebrate Eld El Maulud, a Muslim festival to mark the birth of Prophet Muhammad.

Confirming the incident to Channels Television, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Kaduna State, Corps Commander Kabiru Nadabo, said the driver of the J5 bus carrying the children lost control due to over speeding and then colluded with an oncoming articulated vehicle which resulted in the crash. 6 days after: FRSC battles to get bodies of 2 children in Ovia River (Vanguard)

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Edo has said that the bodies of two children in a bus that plunged into Ovia River were yet to be recovered six days after the accident.

Mr Cyril Mathew, Sector Commander. Edo FRSC disclosed this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Benin on Tuesday.

Vanguard recalls that a commercial bus travelling from Lagos to Port Harcourt on Sept. 12, veered off the highway and plunged into the river. Read more 

Tinubu appoints Amachree as director energy security (Nation)

President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Hon. Ojukaye Flag Amachree as the new Director of Energy Security in the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

The Energy Security Directorate is a new unit in the ONSA that focuses on policy coordination, infrastructure protection strategies, data management, security coordination, risk advisory, and strategic alliances in the energy sector.

According to a statement by ONSA’s Head of Strategic Communications, Zakari Mijinyawa, Amachree’s appointment was part of the government’s commitment to ensuring a stable, sustainable, and secure energy supply for all Nigerians. Read more

UI undergraduates seek public assistance to pay increased school fees (ThisDay)

Some undergraduates of the University of Ibadan (UI) are making news for seeking public assistance in paying their newly increased school fees.

The management of the university had shut down and suspended academic activities on Saturday, August 31 following the protest against fee increment.

According to the management of the school, the three-week break was to allow the students to have adequate time to pay the school fees and complete their online registration. Read more 

Omodewu’s demise: Oyo APC Gets Acting Chairman (Independent)

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has appointed Alhaji Moshood Olayide Abas as its new acting chairman, following the demise of Barrister Isaac Omodewu.

Abas, who was previously the deputy state chairman, was ratified by the State Executive Committee members at an emergency meeting held on Monday at the party’s secretariat in Oke-Ado, Ibadan.

According to the party’s Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, Abas’ appointment is in line with the party’s constitution, which requires the deputy chairman to assume the position of acting chairman in the event of a vacancy. Read more

Lagos threatens to demolish 280 illegal structures (Channels)

The Lagos State Government has threatened to demolish 280 illegal structures to forestall the creation of slums, distortion of the Lagos State Master plan and erosion of the state coastal area.

A statement titled ‘LASG SERVES CONTRAVENTION NOTICE ON ILLEGAL OCCUPANTS OF MAYEGUN WATERFRONT SCHEME ’ by the Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Ekundayo Alebiosu on Tuesday, said notices have been issued to over 280  illegal property owners and occupiers in the Mayegun Waterfront Scheme, located in the Eti Osa Local Government area of the state.

Myegun said the contravention notices required the occupants to provide relevant documentation and approvals that justify their occupation of the properties in question within seven days of the notice, failure of which a demolition notice will be served on them. Read more 

Boarding fees review in model colleges inevitable – Lagos govt (Vanguard)

The Lagos State Government (LASG) says increase in boarding fees in its model colleges is inevitable, to ensure better welfare of the students.

Mr Ganiu Lawal, Deputy Director, Public Affairs, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Lagos State, said this in a statement made available on Monday.

Lawal noted that students in the boarding schools were over one percent of the entire basic and secondary school student population in public schools in the state. Read more

James Cameron is planning for life after Avatar. The filmmaker has purchased the rights to the forthcoming book “Ghosts Of Hiroshima”, and intends to direct a feature adaptation of the atomic bomb story, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Author Charles Pellegrino’s “Ghosts Of Hiroshima” arrives from Blackstone Publishing in August 2025 and follows his 2015 book Last Train From Hiroshima, which will also serve as the basis of the film. Read more

Dozens of Hezbollah members reportedly injured in Lebanon by exploding pagers (CBS)

A source close to Lebanon’s Hezbollah movement told the French news agency AFP that dozens of the group’s members were injured Tuesday when their pagers exploded in the Iran-backed group’s Beirut and south Lebanon strongholds, with another source accusing Israel.

“Dozens of Hezbollah members have been wounded in the south and in Beirut’s southern suburbs after their pagers exploded,” a source close to the group told AFP, requesting anonymity to discuss the matter.
