Lagos residents accuse police of illegal raid (Punch)

Residents of Ilaje in the Ajegunle area of Lagos State have accused men of the state police command of arresting innocent persons during a raid to restore normalcy in the area after pandemonium broke out between two groups of hoodlums on Monday.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the hoodlums were having a party in the area when a disagreement arose among them, which led to a clash.

The clash was said to have caused tension in the area, leading to traders and residents running helter-skelter, but in a bid to secure lives and property, the police reportedly intervened.

During the intervention, the residents alleged that the police raided their homes under the pretext of looking for criminals, adding that innocent residents were arrested and injured. Read more

The Lagos State Environment Sanitation Corp (LAGESC) at the weekend arraigned nine persons arrested for violating the environmental laws before the special offences court in Ogba. The violators were arrested during the joint operation exercise of LAGESC and the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) in different locations including Ikeja, Agege, Oregun, Jakande and Lekki/Epe express way for indiscriminate dumping of refuse in Lagos metropolis.

The offenders are; Gabriel Joel, 25, Segun Adekunle, 30, Joel Godwin, 20, Kabiru Aliu, 44, Aminu Lawal, 44, Christy Nwamkama. Others are Ochanya Ejembi 20, Mercy Amu, 20 and Garuba Abdul Kadiri, 20. When their charge was read, they pleaded guilty, started weeping and begging the magistrate to temper justice with mercy. The Magistrate ruled that the offenders be imprisoned for one week or pay a fine of ₦5,000. Seven of the offenders fulfilled bail conditions while Kabiru Aliyu and Aminu Lawal were remanded pending the fulfillment of their bail conditions or acceptance of option of imprisonment. Read more

Sanwo-Olu vows to prosecute killers of LASTMA officer (Punch)

The Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has vowed that harsh punishment awaits anyone who attacks men of the state’s law enforcement agencies in the line of duty.

He expressed displeasure with the killing of an official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Ganiyu Oyeshina, who was attacked by two trailer drivers in the Sifax-Iganmu area of Apapa.

The 34-year-old Osun State indigene died on Saturday from injuries he sustained during the attack.

The governor, while describing the attack as “mindless and callous,” said it was a wake-up call to all Lagosians. Read more

NUC uncovers 100 fake professors in varsities (Punch)

The National Universities Commission has said it has uncovered about 100 fake professors across Nigerian universities.

The NUC Executive Secretary, Prof Abubakar Rasheed, stated this in the November edition of the commission’s bulletin, obtained by our correspondent.

The ES noted that the commission published the details of the fake professors on its website and also sent the names to the various universities for verification. Read more

Oyo begins enforcement of law against overloading (Guardian)

Commercial motor drivers with more than one passenger on the front seat as well as cyclists with more than one passenger would henceforth be arrested and prosecuted for violation of Oyo State Road Traffic Law. This was disclosed yesterday by the Chairman, Oyo State Road Transport Management Authority (OYRTMA), Mogaji Akin Fagbemi, at Ibadan while addressing journalists.

Fagbemi said the number of accidents attributed to overloading in the recent has risen, calling on all motorists to comply with the State Road Traffic Law (2019) that compelled motorists not to take more than a passenger at the front while commercial motorcyclists were also to take a passenger with compulsory use of crash helmet. Yoruba leaders hold colloquium on security Dec 6 (Guardian)

Prominent Yoruba leaders, including Emeritus Professor Banji Akintoye and the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, will join other stakeholders on Friday, December 6, at a colloquium on national security with particular focus on the South West.The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the colloquium, which will hold at Western Sun Hotel, Ede, Osun State, is organised by a group of professionals and business leaders under the aegis of Ede Unique Club of Nigeria.

A statement jointly signed by the conveners, Dr. Dhikrullah Yagboyaju and Dr. Kajogbola Alimi, gave the theme of the colloquium as ‘Imperative of National Security for Development: South West Nigeria in Focus’.

According to the organisers, the colloquium will galvanise different perspectives of stakeholders from the academia, civil society and non-state actors on the way out of the security challenges facing the nation.“This theme could not have been more apt, considering the serious security challenges facing the nation, with particular focus on South West Nigeria,” the organisers said. Lagos begins mass vaccination against schistosomiasis (Guardian)

Lagos State Government will today begin mass administration of medicines for the control of schistosomiasis ravaging seven councils of the state.

The Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, who disclosed this at the weekend, listed Ikeja, Ifako-Ijaiye, Amuwo-Odofin, Oshodi-Isolo, Agege, Lagos Mainland and Alimosho as the affected councils.

Health workers will go round schools, homes and other important places to administer treatment on children between ages five and 14 from today till Sunday, December 8, he noted. Read more

Australian man found after two weeks stranded in outback (BBC)

A second person has been found alive after becoming stranded two weeks ago in Australia’s remote outback.

Phu Tran, 40, was discovered on Tuesday in the Northern Territory, police said.

Mr Tran was with two other people who became stranded when their car got stuck in a riverbed on 19 November. They later split up to find help.

One woman, Tamra McBeath-Riley, was found on Monday, but her partner, Claire Hockridge, remains missing. Read more

Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) men’s team and the NSCDC women’s team have won the 2019 National Volleyball Premier League, which ended at the weekend at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abuja. Civil Defence, who defeated Customs’ male team 3-2 (21-25, 25-18, 22-25, 25-22, 15-9) at the final round of games, could not gather enough points to win the championship.

Customs Volleyball team retained their title, having won their four previous games with 30 points. NSCDC narrowly finished second after their performance against Nigeria Customs Service with 24 points, while Kano Pillars placed third position with 23 points after beating Nigeria Police Force, who finished fourth place with 22 points. Nigeria Immigration Service came fifth with 19 points, while UCEM of Enugu placed sixth with two points.

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) is enmeshed in another 150,000 dollars scandal as grant received from the World Athletics, formerly International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) was unaccounted for.
