Lagos scrap collector kills man over argument (Punch)
The family of a 48-year-old car washer, Abayomi Owoseni, has been thrown into mourning after he was stabbed to death by a scrap collector, Wasiu Adeyi, on Babalola Street, Off Freedom Way, Ikate, in the Lekki area of Lagos State.
PUNCH Metro gathered that Abayomi was in a heated argument with Adeyi when the latter brought out a knife and stabbed him to death.
The victim’s son, Abiodun, who spoke to our correspondent on Monday, said the incident happened on December 1, 2022.
He said, “That day, a man came to my workplace and asked to see me. He said he had been looking for me over something that happened to my father. I was skeptical about what he said and did not want to go with him, but a senior colleague promised to accompany me. Read more
Lagos begins rebuilding historic Igbosere Court burnt during EndSARS violence (Leadership)
The Lagos State government has begun the redevelopment and reconstruction of the famous Igbosere High Court, which was burnt down by miscreants who hijacked the EndSARS protest in October 2020.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the reconstruction project on Monday, said a new and iconic Court building was in the offing.
He recalled that he set up the Rebuild Lagos Trust Fund (RLTF) in November 2020 to undertake the rebuilding and restoring affected state assets.
Sanwo-Olu, who took to his verified Facebook page, wrote: “Today, I performed the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the redevelopment and reconstruction of the Historic Igbosere High Court which was destroyed during the civil unrest of October 2020. Read more
Sanwo-Olu picks PVC, tasks Lagosians to get PVC (Sun)
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has appealed to the residents of the State, who are of voting age to pick up their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs), from the various Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) offices in their localities.
He made the appeal on Monday when he stopped by at INEC office in the Sura area of Lagos Island Local Government Area to pick up his reprinted PVC alongside the Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, and some of his cabinet members.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, who is seeking re-election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), a few months ago redesignated his location and updated his details, having moved his polling unit from Ikoyi to Lagos Island, ahead of next year’s governorship election.

Eko Drive turns lot into exotic cars, art exhibition (Guardian)
Eko Drive, an outdoor and networking automotive expo, has debuted its first car exhibition in Lagos. Spread out across the parking floor of Alliance Française, the founders of Eko Drive – Ademide Osunsina, Imran Claud-Ennin and Sanjo Morgan – creatively curated an indigenous car exhibition that celebrated the beauty of art and technology of cars.
Osunsina, a cybersecurity analyst, told The Guardian that the idea of the exhibition was not only an attempt to share his passion for cars, but to also create a safe space where a lot more young people could express their love for cars in different ways.
His words: “I want to see people actually having fun in cars in a safe environment. I’ve never been to an event that was very calm and showed off nice cars in a safe way.
“Tailored for everyone in the automotive industry, whether you drive a car or you just like the idea. I wanted to bring that together. I wanted to bring individuals who are very interested in the industry together and have them network in a safe, relaxed environment. DHQ confirms fire at Defence Headquarters, says no death or injuries recorded (Channels)
There was a fire scare at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja on Monday, but no injuries or deaths were recorded.
The cause of the fire incident said to have occurred on the second floor of the DHQ is yet to be ascertained.
Director, Defence Information, Major General Jimmy Akpor, who confirmed the incident said that personnel of the Federal Fire Service and military personnel put the fire under control.
Akpor said, “A minor fire incident occurred on the second floor of the Defence Headquarters, Garki Abuja this afternoon 12 December 2022. The cause of the fire outbreak is unknown at this moment. Read more
Group tours Europe, seeks support for Benin Royal Museum (Guardian)
A group, Coalition of Benin Socio-Cultural Organisation (CBSCO), yesterday, pledged its support for Benin culture and traditions, as it embarks on a tour of Europe.
It said the tour would expose Edo’s rich cultural heritage, create opportunity to inspect museums, meet and engage relevant stakeholders and attract support for Oba Palace.
A statement made available to journalists in Benin City and signed by the Secretary General of the Organisation, Mr. Osaro Iyamu, said: “As part of our cultural engagement working visit to European countries, we are here to inspect some museums, meet and engage relevant stakeholders, attract support to Oba Palace and thank those that have been promoting and projecting the rich Benin cultural heritage in diaspora and ask them to continually do so. “
According to him, the leadership and members, including stakeholders of Edo Cultural Association Rome LA210, who received the delegation, were briefed on plans and itineraries of the team while in Europe with a view to integrating them into the main activities and programmes of the kingdom. Oba Ewuare made this declaration, when the Management of University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) paid him a courtesy visit in his palace in Benin City.
He said if the push and pull factors behind the menace were not urgently addressed, it could get to a freezing point whereby universal health coverage – access to quality health services – would become a mirage.

K-pop star Jin from BTS begins military service (BBC)
Jin, the oldest member of K-pop mega-band BTS, has entered military service – the first of the group to do so.
The 30-year-old posted a photo of himself with his new military haircut before enlisting on Tuesday. “It looks cuter than I expected,” he said.
As South Korea is still technically at war with its hostile neighbour North Korea, all able-bodied men are required to serve in the army.
Jin has begun five weeks’ training at a bootcamp near the North Korean border.

Angelo Badalamenti, David Lynch’s composer on Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet and more, dies aged 85

Angelo Badalamenti, the acclaimed composer who created haunting music for David Lynch projects including Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks and Mulholland Drive, has died at the age of 85.
Badalamenti died on Sunday of natural causes, surrounded by family at his New Jersey home, his niece told the Hollywood Reporter.
Lynch and Badalamenti would become close friends and collaborators, working together on Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks, Wild at Heart, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, Lost Highway, The Straight Story and Mulholland Drive. Badalamenti also appeared on screen as the coffee-loving gangster Luigi Castigliane in Mulholland Drive, and played piano with Isabella Rossellini in Blue Velvet.
The classically trained musician also worked with the likes of Nina Simone, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Shirley Bassey, Marianne Faithfull, Liza Minnelli, Pet Shop Boys and LL Cool J over his varied career, and composed themes including Inside the Actors Studio and the torch theme for the 1992 Olympic Games. The Smile will release a live album recorded during the band’s set at this year’s Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland.
‘‘The Smile At Montreux Jazz Festival’’ captures the trio playing songs from debut album ‘‘A Light For Attracting Attention’’, including ‘‘You Will Never Work In Television Again’’, ‘‘The Smoke’’, ‘‘Pana-vision’’, ‘‘Free In The Knowledge’’ and more. The festival took place in July, with the live album featuring eight songs from their set.
The digital-only release will arrive on streaming platforms this Wednesday (December 14), while a concert film of the performed tracks will broadcast on the band’s YouTube channel on Tuesday (December 13) at 8pm GMT/3pm EST. It will be available for just 48 hours, and will also feature footage of the first-ever public performance of new song ‘‘Bending Hectic’’, written the same day it was debuted.

It’s a sequel 13 years in the making, but James Cameron will have to sit the premiere out.
The “Avatar: The Way of Water” director will not be in attendance at Monday’s premiere for the film in Los Angeles after testing positive for Covid-19, according to a statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.
“Jim has COVID but is feeling fine. He tested positive as part of a routine testing cadence. He will continue to complete his schedule virtually but will not be at the premiere,” a Disney spokesperson told the outlet.

FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried arrested in Bahamas (BBC)
The Bahamas police have arrested Sam Bankman-Fried, founder of the collapsed cryptocurrency exchange FTX, the country’s attorney general has said.
He will appear in a magistrates court in The Bahamas on Tuesday, authorities in the Caribbean country said.
Police said Mr Bankman-Fried was arrested for “Financial Offences” against laws in the US and The Bahamas.
Last month FTX filed for bankruptcy in the US, leaving many users unable to withdraw their funds. Read more

Nigeria’s U20 men’s national football team, Flying Eagles continued to exhibit their goal-scoring prowess as they whipped Kickers Academy 8-0 on Saturday at the FIFA Goal Project Football Field.
Ayuba Francis made no mistake 15 minutes into the game with a simple tap-in to put the Eagles in front before Lekan Adams doubled the lead 30 minutes into the game.

David Rudisha survives plane crash in Kenya (BBC)
Former double Olympic 800m champion David Rudisha was unharmed after a plane he was flying in crash-landed.
The plane – carrying Rudisha and five others – came down in Kajiado county in south-east Kenya on Saturday. Photos show it upside down in a field.
Kenyan Rudisha, 33, described it as a “scary episode”.
“All was well close to seven or eight minutes into the flight when the engine of the plane suddenly went quiet,” he told the Daily Nation.
“He (the pilot) saw some clear space where he tried to land the plane, but one of its wings hit a tree as the plane started to spin before landing on the rocky field. Read more

A Qatari photographer has died while covering the World Cup — the second journalist to lose his life at the global event following influential US soccer writer Grant Wahl’s death.
Khalid al-Misslam, a photojournalist for local sports outlet Al Kass TV, died on Saturday, the Doha-based Gulf Times reported.
“Al-Misslam, a Qatari, died suddenly while covering the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. We believe in Allah’s mercy and forgiveness for him, and send our deepest condolences to his family,” the Gulf Times reported on Twitter.
The circumstances of al-Misslam’s death were unclear but the announcement was made on the same day that a security guard was seriously injured when he fell at Lusail Iconic Stadium, the Guardian reported. Read more

Pistons’ Cunningham to have season-ending shin surgery (CBS)
Detroit Pistons guard Cade Cunningham will undergo surgery on his shin and miss the remainder of the season, according to Adrian Wojnarowski. Cunningham is expected to make a full recovery and be back with the team for training camp ahead of the 2023-24 campaign.
Cunningham has not played since Nov. 9. Over the past month, he has been resting and rehabbing to see if his shin would improve without needing to go the surgical route. However, after consultation with doctors and the organization, all involved decided the season-ending procedure would be the best decision for the long term, per Wojnarowski.
The No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, Cunningham’s career has gotten off to a frustrating start. He missed time at the beginning of his rookie season due to an ankle injury and has still only played 76 career games — less than a full regular season.
