Lagos seals popular Idera Market in Oshodi (Vanguard)

The Lagos State Government, through the State Environmental Sanitation Corps, LAGESC, popularly known as KAI on Thursday sealed off Idera Market, located in Oshodi area of the state for contravening environmental laws. 

The Corps Marshal KAI, Major Olaniyi Cole (retd), while confirming the closure said it was part of intensified efforts aimed at ensuring adherence to environmental cleanliness across registered markets in the State.

According to Cole, ‘‘Our operatives stationed across the Oshodi division during routine market monitoring identified the filth, unhygienic practices and indiscriminate dumping of refuse around the Idera Market area which prompted us to seal off the market until further notice’.” Read more

Driver escapes death as vehicle overturns in Lagos (Punch)

A driver narrowly escaped death after his vehicle overturned in the Alakija area of Mile 2, Lagos State, on Wednesday.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed the incident in a statement obtained by PUNCH Metro on Wednesday.

He noted that the accident occurred when the vehicle veered off the road at high speed, reportedly due to brake failure. Read more

Lagdo Dam: FG to build 5 buffer dams to prevent flooding (Channels)

The Federal Government, through the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), has proposed to build five buffer dams to contain incessant floodings which often arise from the release of water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon. 

NIHSA Director-General, Umar Mohammed, made this known when he featured on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief breakfast programme on Thursday.

The Agency also warned Nigerians resident in floodplains to relocate immediately to safe spaces in anticipation of attendant floods that annually come with the release of water from the Lagdo Dam. Read more

2024 SSCE: 40 schools involved in mass cheating – NECO Registrar (Tribune)

The Registrar of the National Examination Council (NECO), Professor Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, has disclosed that forty schools were involved in mass cheating during the 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).

This occurred across seventeen states, and the schools will face disciplinary actions.

Professor Wushishi made this known during a press briefing at the NECO headquarters in Minna, Niger State, where he also announced a 30.1% reduction in examination malpractice compared to the previous year. Read more

Kwara seals 14 buildings for environmental infractions (Punch)

The Kwara Government has, in the past few days, sealed off 14 buildings due to environmental concerns, the state’s Commissioner for Environment, Hajia Nafisat Musa-Buge, said on Thursday.

Sweden charges a woman with war crimes for allegedly torturing Yazidi women and children in Syria (ABC)

Swedish authorities on Thursday charged a 52-year-old woman associated with the Islamic State group with genocide, crimes against humanity and serious war crimes against Yazidi women and children in Syria — in the first such case of a person to be tried in the Scandinavian country.

Lina Laina Ishaq, who’s a Swedish citizen, allegedly committed the crimes from August 2014 to December 2016, in Raqqa, the former de facto capital of the self-proclaimed IS caliphate and home to about 300,000 people.

The crimes “took place under IS rule in Raqqa, and this is the first time that IS attacks against the Yazidi minority have been tried in Sweden,” senior prosecutor Reena Devgun said in a statement. Read more

Chief Magistrate Victor So said in his judgment Thursday that Chu Kai-pong, 27, sought to “reignite the ideas behind the 2019 protests by wearing the T-shirt that read “Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times.”

Malaysia arrests business leaders as probe widens in child sex abuse case (AlJazeera)

Police in Malaysia have arrested the chief executive and other leaders of a prominent business group accused of running charity homes where hundreds of children and youth were allegedly physically and sexually abused.

Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain confirmed on Thursday that Nasiruddin Mohd Ali, the head of Global Ikhwan Services and Business (GISB), and 18 other people ranging in age from 25 to 65 were arrested following a police raid in the capital, Kuala Lumpur.

Several of the detainees were members of the advisory board of GISB, a self-described “Islamic” company involved in businesses ranging from supermarkets to laundromats in more than 20 countries, which has been linked to the now-defunct Malaysia-based Al-Arqam religious sect. Read more

Former Arsenal academy talent Jay Emmanuel-Thomas has been charged in connection with the seizure of around £600,000 worth of cannabis at Stanstead airport.
