Lagos security guard shoots motorist over deflated tyre (Punch)

A security guard, Lawrence Ajigboye, has been arrested by men of the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly shooting a car owner, Obasi Ogbonaya, in the thigh around the Energy filling station in the Irawo area on the Ikorodu Road.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Obasi parked his Honda Pilot SUV in front of the filling station and left to do something in the area but when he returned, he discovered that one of the tyres had been deflated.

Annoyed by the development, Obasi reportedly asked the people around for who deflated his tyre and approached Lawrence, a senior security guard in the area, to get an answer. Read more

Lagos extends market hours (Nation)

The Lagos State Government has extended the hours of operations of both food markets and non-food markets.

They are now to open at 8 am and close at 6 pm.

In a statement by the Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Dr Wale Ahmed, the decision by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is to further enhance trade and commerce and mitigate the hardship of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ahmed emphasised that the alternate days of operations will remains in force, whereby food markets open on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Read more

The Presidency and stakeholders at Apapa ports have disagreed over the pace of work in the area.

While the Presidency commended the pace of work by contractors handling the roads leading to and from Apapa ports and its environment, the stakeholders said it wasn’t true, insisting gridlock was still very much around in the area.

However, a statement by the Presidency after a virtual meeting attended by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and other stakeholders, noted the stages of critical road infrastructure. Read more

Churches reopen in Ogun, comply with COVID-19 protocols (Nation)

Churches in Abeokuta, the Ogun capital, reopened on Sunday with most complying with protocols to check the spread of coronavirus.

Automated hand washing units, hand sanitisers and infrared thermometers were deployed by the churches.

Many churches also displayed the bold inscription” No Mask No Entry, ” at entrances with officials taking the temperature of worshipers wearing facemasks.

Social distancing was observed by worshipers with stickers to show distance spacing. Read more

Insecurity: Nkanga bemoans FG’s stance on Boko Haram (Vanguard)

A former military administrator of Akwa Ibom State, Air Commodore Idongesit Nkanga retd, has bemoaned the Nigeria Government for refusing to accept that Boko Haram is a terrorist group in spite of the killings perpetrated by the insurgents.

Nkanga spoke weekend in Uyo while reacting to a recent statement by the United States, alerting Nigeria government that foreign terrorist groups, the Al-Qaeda and Islamic States (IS) were secretly taking over the North West of the country.

He stressed that the warning by the United States about Al-Qaeda penetrating some parts of the country was not surprising, and expressed concern that the security situation may escalate if the Nigeria Government kept pretending over their existence. Read more

Kidnapped Chinese workers regain freedom (Guardian)

Four Chinese Nationals who were kidnapped in Akamkpa local government area of Cross River State have regained freedom after being in captivity for 22 days.

The victims were kidnapped at gun point by unknown gunmen at Danatrite Construction Company where they work in Oban community.

It was gathered that a Police Sergeant, Ifere Sampson who was securing the company was shot dead before Kan Jinxi, Hujinchang, Jiang Jijun and Cheng Qing, were whisked away by their abductors in the early hours of Wednesday, July, 29th, 2020. Read more

CCTV exposes man who allegedly raped 11-year-old girl in Delta (Vanguard)

The Delta State Police Command  arrested a 30 years old man simply called Jomaph, who raped an 11 years old girl after a CCTV camera exposed him in Sapele, Delta State.

The incident happened along Oleh Road in the timber town at about 7 am on Wednesday morning.

Vanguard learnt that the victim, (name withheld) had gone to the toilet that morning to ease herself and had returned minutes later crying that she had been raped by Jomaph, who happens to be their neighbour. Read more

Okorocha angry that I didn’t dissolve Ihedioha’s panel – Uzodinma (Punch)

The Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma, has alleged that he fell out with former governor  Rochas Okorocha because he refused to dissolve investigation panels set up  by the immediate past governor Emeka Ihedioha administration.

Uzodinma, according to a statement on Sunday by his media office, stated this while briefing leaders of the All Progressives Congress at an enlarged meeting of the state caucus of the party at the Government House, Owerri on Saturday.

The governor, according to the statement, titled, ‘Why I fell out with Okorocha – Uzodinma,’ said he refused to grant Okorocha’s request on the dissolution of the panels. Read more

BUK centres test 27,831 samples (Nation)

Outgoing Vice Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano (BUK) Prof. Yahuza Bello said on Sunday the three COVID-19 testing centres established by the institution since the outbreak of the pandemic had tested no fewer than 27,831 samples.

Bello stated this on Sunday during the inauguration of the International Conference Centre (ICC) at BUK’s College of Health Sciences, Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano.

He added that out of the 27,831 tests conducted, over 13,000 samples were from Kano and others were from Jigawa, Yobe, Kaduna and Katsina states. Read more

At least 15 killed in attack on hotel in Somalia’s capital (CBC)

Somalia’s security forces on Sunday ended a nearly five-hour siege by Islamist extremists at a beachside hotel in Somalia’s capital, said police and a government spokesperson.

At least 15 people were killed when the attackers invaded the Elite Hotel, a new establishment popular with Mogadishu’s young people, said Col. Ahmed Aden, a police officer.

Security forces later killed all four attackers and rescued dozens of people who were trapped inside the hotel, Ismail Mukhtar, spokesperson of Somalia’s information ministry told The Associated Press. Read more

New Zealand postpones election amid coronavirus resurgence (Aljazeera)

New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Monday postponed the general election by four weeks to October 17 but ruled out delaying it any further, as the country tackles a new outbreak of the coronavirus.

“Ultimately, the 17th of October … provides sufficient time for parties to plan around the range of circumstances we will be campaigning under,” Ardern said in a news conference.

In a letter to Democratic lawmakers Sunday evening, Pelosi also called on her colleagues to appear at a post office in their district on Tuesday for a coordinated news event. “In a time of a pandemic, the Postal Service is Election Central. Americans should not have to choose between their health and their vote,” she wrote.

Pelosi said House Democratic leader Steny Hoyer would soon announce the legislative schedule for the coming week. House Democrats were likely to discuss the schedule on a conference call on Monday and were expected to be in session next Saturday, a senior Democratic aide said on condition of anonymity because the plans were private. Ash Christian, an Emmy award-winning producer, actor, filmmaker and founder of Cranium Entertainment, died in his sleep on Thursday in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. He was 35.

Born on Jan. 16, 1985, in Paris, Tex., Christian began writing and directing short films at the age of 14, and moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dreams just two years later. He wrote, directed and starred in his first feature film, “Fat Girls,” in 2006 at just 19 years old. The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and won an award for outstanding emerging talent at L.A. Outfest.

A young coronavirus survivor in Melbourne has been testing positive for the coronavirus for a month, and it’s brought with it some bizarre and gross symptoms.

Tina Dinh got sick on Sunday, July 26, but three days later her condition had deteriorated so badly that an ambulance rushed her to hospital.

The 26-year-old was in the Intensive Care Unit for a week. After a struggle, she came through and was released from hospital last week.

Although the worst is behind Ms Dinh, she has revealed some persistent symptoms that she can’t seem to shake, almost a month later. Read more

Simona Halep won her first title since before the coronavirus lockdown at the Prague Open with a straight-set victory over Elise Mertens.

The Romanian world number two beat Belgium’s Mertens 6-2 7-5 for her first title on clay since the 2018 French Open.

Halep, 28, becomes only the second top seed to win the Prague Open, after Karolina Pliskova did so in 2015.

Victory in the Czech capital gives Halep her second title of 2020.
