Lagos seize 30 tonnes of poisonous ponmo worth N10m (Nation)

The Lagos State Government through the Ministry of Agriculture, State Taskforce on Environment and Special Offences Enforcement Unit and officers of the Nigeria Police Force on Monday said it had seized 30 Tonnes of animal hides and skin popularly known as ‘Ponmo’ presumed to be poisonous and unhealthy for human consumption at a ware house located at College Road in Igando area of Lagos State. According to the Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr. Oluwatoyin Suarau, the special operation which led to the arrest of operators of the factory was based on a tip off by concerned members of the public who became suspicious of activities in the ware house where offensive stench ooze out during the preservation of the consignment. Wike threatens to dethrone monarchs over kidnapping, cultism (Punch)

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has warned that the state government would dethrone traditional rulers of communities where cultism and kidnapping were encouraged. The governor also cautioned that communities with a prevalence of cultism, kidnapping and other forms of crime would no longer enjoy the patronage of the state government. The umbrella body of pensioners in the country, the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to call to order, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige and stop him from plunging labour unions in the country into crisis. The NUP is accusing the Minister of deliberately trying to factionalise the union, pointing out that as a way of achieving his intention, the Minister is sponsoring his tribal people to create a faction of the pension union. The Nation had reported last week that a new pension body known as Federal Parastatal and Private Sector Pensioners Association of Nigeria had approached the Ministry of Labour for registration as a pension union, alleging that the NUP has failed its members. NYSC confirms abduction of corps member in Borno (Punch)

The National Youth Service Corps on Monday confirmed the abduction of a male corps member, Abraham Amuta, by Boko Haram insurgents in Borno. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Borno State Coordinator, Mr. Rabiu Aminu, confirmed the incident to newsmen in Maiduguri. Aminu disclosed that the corps member was abducted alongside a pastor with the Living Faith Church, simply identified as Oyeleke, in an attack coordinated by the insurgents against motorists on Maiduguri-Chibok road on April 10. UNIJOS female undergraduate found dead in hostel (Nation)

Emotions were high among students of the University of Jos (UNIJOS) as a female undergraduate student was found dead on her bed in the hostel. The 22-year-old student identified as Mercy Naan, was said to be missing for two days before she was discovered dead in her room. Plateau state Police command, confirmed the sad incidence Monday in a press statement. Commercial operators of tricycles, popularly called Keke Napep, have withdrawn their services in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, claiming it was in protest against men of the FRSC and Police who have allegedly turned them into meal tickets. Subsequently, commuters and residents of Yenagoa were left stranded for hours on Monday, and had to trek long distance as the operators took to the streets in protest. The operators said they were protesting the “incessant harassment, extortion and intimidation” by officers of the state Ministry of Transport, the Police, men of the Federal Road Safety Corps and other security agencies. Police arrest man for stabbing friend to death in Ogun (Nation)

Police in Ogun State have arrested one Oni Olohunwa for stabbing his friend to death, following exchange of words between them. The victim, Baraka Taiwo, was rushed to a nearby hospital but died while receiving treatment. His remains have been deposited at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) Sagamu for post mortem examination.
