First deportation flight to Rwanda halted after flurry of last minute legal appeals (Metro)

Plans to deport the first asylum seekers to Rwanda ended in farce after judges reprieved the last handful as they waited on the runway — on the day 400 more, including woman and children, crossed the Channel to Britain.

The Boeing 767-300 — chartered at a cost of £500,000 to taxpayers — was grounded at RAF Boscombe Down, Wiltshire, after a frantic series of last minute legal challenges.

Foreign secretary Liz Truss had said earlier: ‘The important thing is we establish the principle, we establish the deterrent to deter people-trafficking gangs.’

The government says the £120million deal for Rwanda to process UK asylum claims by people who arrive illegally will end crossings from France and break people-smugglers’ business model. Read more

Italy’s rising female filmmakers being celebrated by ‘The Wave’ in London (Variety)

The rising clutch of women directors breaking the glass ceiling in Italy’s male dominated film industry is being celebrated by a curated screenings’ series titled The Wave playing this week in London and set to open with Chiara Bellosi’s Berlin Panorama coming-of-age drama “Swing Ride.”

Running June 15-19 at London’s Ciné Lumière, Kensington, after a previous run in Berlin, The Wave has been assembled by Cinecittà’s promotional arm to draw international notice to what chief Carla Cattani says is “a unique time” for female filmmakers in Italy where they are “no longer isolated cases.”

Indeed, as Cattani notes in her introduction to The Wave’s program notes, prior to 2010 it was very rare to find more than two Italian films directed by females within the same year. In fact in 2010, out of 122 Italian films released theatrically only two titles were directed by women.

Cut to a decade later, however, and the percentage of Italian feature films directed by women that got a theatrical release reached 13% in 2019 and 2020, despite the pandemic. Read more

But a tragic accident shatters that facade and guilt, suspicion and paranoia combine to dissolve their sisterly bond, turning the two mothers against one another in a psychological battle of wills.

Mothers’ Instinct is based on Barbara Abel’s novel Derrière la Haine, which was adapted by Olivier Masset-Depasse as the 2018 Belgian thriller Duelles. Sarah Conradt (50 States of Fright) adapted the English-language script.

Cinematographer Benoit Delhomme (The Theory of Everything, Lawless) will direct, taking over from Masset-Depasse, who was originally set to adapt his own feature into English. Read more

Kremlin: Britain should talk to separatist leaders regarding UK nationals sentenced to death (VOA)

The Kremlin says the United Kingdom should address the leaders of separatist-controlled parts of Ukraine’s Donetsk region and not Moscow over two Britons sentenced to death last week for fighting alongside Ukrainian forces against Russian troops in eastern Ukraine.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters in Moscow on Tuesday that British authorities had not turned to Moscow regarding the fate of Aiden Aslin and Shaun Pinner who, along with Moroccan national Saaudun Brahim, were sentenced to death on June 9 for “mercenary activities” by what separatists called the Supreme Court of the Donetsk People’s Republic.

“They should address the authorities of the country that pronounced the sentences, and that is not the Russian Federation,” Peskov said.

Britain, the United Nations, Ukraine, and Germany have condemned the death sentences. Read more

Anthony Joshua to change tactics against Usyk (Punch)

Heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua has accepted that his decision to try and outbox Oleksandr Usyk was appalling.

The tactics he employed last September saw him easily outmatched and outclassed by Ukraine’s Usyk, who inherited the WBA, IBF and WBO belts and he faced heavy criticism for this approach.

This time around, Joshua is prepared to try and knock out ex-cruiserweight king Usyk in their rematch in August.

The former two-time heavyweight champion will be trained by Robert Garcia and previous coach Angel Fernandez for the money-spinning sequel. And Garcia has suggested that Joshua is capable of winning over the 12-round distance despite last year’s result. Read more

Lewis Hamilton calls out sexist fan who deletes tweet abusing Sky Sports’ Naomi Schiff (DailyStar)

Lewis Hamilton has called out an F1 fan who sent a sexist tweet to Sky Sports pundit and presenter Naomi Schiff.

Schiff, who competed in the W Series in 2019, joined the Sky Sports team for 2022 and has been a big hit among fans, providing a fresh insight alongside the likes of Damon Hill and Johnny Herbert. She also co-presents the show Any Driven Monday, which is broadcast on YouTube and Sky every Monday after a race weekend.

That prompted Hamilton, who was interviewed by the 28-year-old earlier this year, to spring to her defence. The seven-time world champion posted: “Naomi is an ex-professional racing driver & totally qualified to give her opinion as part of the Sky team. Read more

Rory McIlroy says PGA Tour players who joined the LIV Golf Invitational Series took the ‘easy way out’ (ESPN)

Rory McIlroy said he is disappointed that some PGA Tour players took the “easy way out” and joined the rival LIV Golf Invitational Series, and in how six-time major champion Phil Mickelson helped create the new circuit.

McIlroy, speaking at a news conference Tuesday ahead of this week’s U.S. Open at The Country Club, said he understands why aging players were tempted by millions of dollars in signing bonuses from LIV Golf, but he believes younger ones who left made a shortsighted decision by defecting.

“I understand. Yes, because a lot of these guys are in their late 40s,” McIlroy said. “In Phil’s case, early 50s. Yeah, I think everyone in this room would say to themselves that their best days are behind them. That’s why I don’t understand for the guys that are a similar age to me going because I would like to believe that my best days are still ahead of me, and I think theirs are, too. So that’s where it feels like you’re taking the easy way out.”

While McIlroy, 33, said he didn’t lose respect for Mickelson as a player, noting that he became golf’s oldest major champion at age 50 at the 2021 PGA Championship at Kiawah Island, he didn’t like how Mickelson handled his defection to LIV Golf. Read more
